TOPEKA – About 100 people joined Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and his family tonight for a renewed Kansas tradition, the lighting of the Kansas Christmas tree on the grounds of the Statehouse.

“For generations, Kansas governors would light a tall pine that grew on the south lawn. We are excited to bring back this holiday tradition and to share the Kansas Christmas tree with all who visit the capitol during the holiday season,” Gov. Brownback said.

Eight year old Christopher Carbon, Topeka, and Santa Claus helped the Governor flip the switch to light the 10-foot Scotch pine tree.

The Governor said the season was a chance to refresh and rejoice and encouraged Kansans to support their communities through volunteering.

“Look for those opportunities to help those needing a hand up. Ring a bell for the Salvation Army. Serve a meal at a homeless shelter. Donate your time and energy,” Brownback said. “Imagine what a wonderful holiday season this will be if every one of us preformed one simple act of kindness.”

The Topeka High School Madrigals, a 16-member select choir group, serenaded the group with tradition Christmas songs. Steve Eubank is the director of the Madrigals.

Presented annually by the Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association to the Kansas First Family, the tree comes from the Memory Lane Christmas Tree Farm owned by Harry and Juanita Peckham, Rantoul, Kansas.
