TOPEKA (AP) – A Topeka foundation that tells the story of the Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation case is complaining about the National Park Service.

The Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research recently was kicked out of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. Concerns led to a government-commissioned audit into the foundation’s finances. The foundation received a copy last week, but the findings won’t be released to the media until early next year.

Site superintendent David Smith says the initial results of the audit were so troubling that the park service suspended funding to the foundation.

The foundation released a statement Thursday complaining that Smith is casting the audit in a “highly negative light” before the foundation has had a chance to review the results.
