WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man has been arrested for allegedly making bomb threats at three locations in Newton.

According to Newton police Lt. Bryan Hall, Harvey County dispatchers received a call around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday from a man who claimed he had planted bombs at a grocery store, the public library and the community corrections office. Authorities say the suspect provided a timeline for when the bombs would detonate.

Police say each location was evacuated. Hall said a search was conducted once the time frame had elapsed. No explosive devices were found.

Authorities have not identified the suspect.

NEWTON, Kan. – Police in Newton are investigating the threat of bombs being set off in that city.

At 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Harvey County Communications received a 911 call from an individual indicating he had planted “devices” in various locations in Newton. The locations were identified as the Newton Public Library, Community Corrections, and a Dillons store. However, the caller didn’t identify which Dillons store. The caller provided a timeline for when the devices would be detonated.

Officers responded to each location and, with the participation of management, were able to conduct quick and orderly evacuations. The buildings were secured and the timeline was allowed to elapse.

During this time frame, investigators worked quickly to develop a lead in the case, and interviews were ongoing.

Newton Police were working in conjunction with members of the ATF and Wichita Bomb Squad to ensure the safety of everyone in the community.
