HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The 22-year-old man shot by Hutchinson Police last week was actually brought to court Tuesday morning where he was read the numerous charges against him.

Senior Judge William “Buck” Lyle told Joseph Roman during the appearance that the state has charged him with 15-counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Roman was released from Hutchinson Regional Medical Center after being shot by police after he pointed a shot gun at them during a stand off that lasted over four hours on August 5. Roman suffered a gun shot wound to the hand in the incident.

Five officers were placed on administrative leave as per normal procedure as the investigation continues.

The family of the defendant told Eagle Radio that Roman needs a mental evaluation and that they had asked the state to consider that earlier when the defendant was arrested for DUI. That was apparently never done.

Roman remains jailed on a $100,000 bond and the case now moves to waiver-status docket on Sept, 2.
