The suspect in an attempted strong armed robbery of a Hutchinson man was in court Wednesday morning for the reading of the formal charges and became upset with the charges and the prosecutor.

Justin Gleason told Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen that he didn’t understand the charges after the judge informed him he could face prison time for attempted robbery, attempted aggravated burglary, criminal threat and blackmail. The judge explained that he’s accused of attempting these things, and then Gleason seemed to understand.

Allegedly, he sent text messages to the victim and told him he better have the money, and was coming over to collect. Senior Assistant District Attorney Steve Maxwell alleges he was extorting money from the victim over crack cocaine.

When Gleason showed up at the victims home just after 12:30 a-m on December 15, police were already aware of what was happening and were there waiting and he was arrested on the charges.

He also objected to the 100-hundred thousand dollar bond even though he managed to post it. The judge asked Maxwell his thoughts on the bond, and he stated he thought it was appropriate considering Gleason has multiple cases of selling crack cocaine in Oklahoma, and Gleason then shouted out, “that isn’t here.” The judge then explained a criminal history doesn’t have to be just in the state of Kansas.

Gleason asked for a public defender and stated he has no job. He says, “everything is gone because of these charges.”

Gleason had served time on community corrections for a felony conviction of criminal damage to property for a case that goes back to 2008 as well as the Oklahoma cases.

The judge set his case for a waiver-status hearing on January 10.
