Hutchinson Police still don’t have the suspect in three brief high speed chases over the holiday weekend in custody.

But, the suspect is well known to law enforcement not only locally, but regionally. The suspect believed to be 23-year-old Ellsworth resident, Scott Lutz. Police believe he is the one who was in a stolen a Maroon 1994 Ford Explorer when he led officers on the chases, often at high rates of speed.

The latest round of chases came to a bit of a climax early Monday morning when they believe Lutz struck a curb, a BBQ pit, and a tree, at Brookside Dr., and Van Buren in west Hutchinson. Police searched that area, but were not able to locate him, so no arrest has been made.

It was back in October when Reno County Sheriff’s Deputies along with deputies from Rice and Barton County, as well as the Kansas Highway Patrol were were involved in a high speed chase also involving Lutz.

That chase started when Reno County Sheriff Sgt., Matt Tatro tried to stop Scott Lutz for speeding, reportedly going 80-mph. But, it was quickly called off by Reno County deputies when the chase went into Rice County.

The Rice County Sheriff’s office then reported that the chase then went into Barton County, where Lutz abandoned the vehicle. They apparently searched for him in a wooded area, but about five hours later, he came to a residence in Rice County asking for a drink of water.

He was arrested on a warrant in Ellsworth County for criminal threat.

The Kansas Department of Corrections website shows he served time for a chase in Russell County, and a theft case in Ellsworth County, but have also led authorities on several chases across the area.

Again, authorities are looking for Lutz, but as of late this afternoon Wednesday, no arrest has been made.
