HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The HHS debate squad finished its regular season Saturday with a pair of top finishes at area tournaments.

At Augusta, junior Matt LaMunyon and sophomore Alexis Glaspie finished with a perfect 5-0 record and tied for first place in wins and speaker points, taking home the second place medal after going to opponent speaker points as a tiebreaker. With this record, the pair also earn enough wins on the season to qualify for the two-speaker state debate tournament in January at Olathe Northwest High School.

At Maize, seniors Julia Henry and Zoe Crater placed fourth with a 4-1 record in prelims, advancing to quarterfinals and earning their fourth Debate Coaches Invitational bid on the season.

The Salthawk debate team moves into postseason mode this week. Friday and Saturday, the squad competes in the West Kansas National Speech and Debate Association district tournament at Lyons. The top two teams from that tournament will advance to national competition next June in Salt Lake City.

The weekend of Dec. 18 and 19, the squad competes in the four-speaker regional debate tournament at Topeka High School. The top three teams out of the regional advance to state Jan. 15 and 16 at Olathe Northwest.
