Forecasters see no relief in sight anytime soon from the scorching Kansas heat wave that has plunged the state into triple-digit temperatures.

Meteorologist Chris Jakub of the National Weather Service in Wichita said Thursday that the forecast is for temperatures mostly above 100 until Wednesday. And it could continue beyond that.

An upper level high pressure zone sitting over the Central Plains refuses to break down or move out of the area.

Temperatures are expected to reach 106 in Wichita on Thursday, and go even higher in parts of central Kansas where the thermometer could reach near 110.

The heat is brutal in Hill City, which has recorded the hottest temperature in the nation for the past five days. Highs reached 115 Wednesday in Hill City.

A man who escaped from the Cherokee County jail Sunday has been arrested and returned to jail.

But authorities allege Jimmy Dale Sluder committed a residential burglary before he was arrested Tuesday in Pittsburg.

The Joplin Globe reports Sluder was part of an inmate work program when he ran away while taking out trash early Sunday. He was in jail on theft charges.

He was arrested at a Pittsburg apartment after officers received a tip about his whereabouts.

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says Sluder is suspected of breaking into a Columbus house Tuesday afternoon. He allegedly tied up the homeowner and left with a vehicle and other property. The homeowner was able to free himself and notify authorities.

Bond has been revoked for a Texas man who police say killed and starting eating his housemate’s dog after chasing a neighbor on his hands and knees while growling.

Waco police say Michael Terron Daniel remained jailed Wednesday after a judge revoked his bail in a previous assault case. The 22-year-old is charged with felony cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

Police say a caller reported a man was going crazy, and when officers arrived, they found Daniel on the porch covered in blood and holding the dead dog.

Police say Daniel told people at the home he had taken K-2, a form of synthetic marijuana, then assaulted them and started biting the dog’s flesh.

McLennan County Jail records don’t list an attorney for Daniel, who was arrested Monday.

A part-time assistant professor at Kansas State University says in a lawsuit that she was denied a full-time position because she’s a Muslim and a woman.

In a federal lawsuit filed earlier this month, Sabreen Gad is seeking more than $100,000 in damages.

Gad reportedly had a part-time teaching position in the university’s geology department in 2010. Her husband is a tenure-track professor in the same department.

Gad alleges supervisors refused to consider her for full-time work. She claims she was treated differently because she is a woman and a Muslim.

Kansas State has not yet filed a response to the lawsuit.

The high temperatures baking most of Kansas are not expected to ease for the rest of the week.

Northwest and north-central Kansas is under a red flag warning through Wednesday, meaning high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity pose a serious risk of fire.

The National Weather Service says several western Kansas towns set records Monday, including 113 at Rawlins, Lane and Norton and 112 in Rooks, Trego and Thomas. Temperatures are forecast to reach around 110 on Tuesday.

A heat advisory is in effect for most of central Kansas through Tuesday evening, with high humidity and temperatures making it feel like 105 degrees or more.

A hazardous weather advisory is in effect for the rest of the state, with the metropolitan Kansas City area under excessive heat watch.

A Kansas woman has been arrested after a fatal accident on Interstate 80 near Grand Island.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Kathy Teichmeier, of Almena, Kan., was taken into custody after Monday’s accident, which occurred around 3:50 p.m.

Officials say Teichmeier was driving east when she tried to make a U-turn. The sheriff’s office says Teichmeier’s vehicle clipped the rear wheel of a motorcycle as she turned left, and another motorcycle rammed into Teichmeier’s car.

The second motorcyclist died later at a hospital. The first motorcyclist managed to avoid crashing. Their names haven’t been released.

Teichmeier and 4 of her passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment, then released.

Teichmeier was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Hall County records say Teichmeier remained in custody on Tuesday.

The Kansas winter wheat harvest is nearly finished.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that only 4% of the crop is left to be cut statewide. Harvest is running about three weeks ahead of normal in the state.

Farmers in northwest Kansas are close to wrapping up. They had 61% of their wheat in the bin as of Sunday.

Meanwhile, some spring-planted row crops are showing signs of stress from high temperatures and lack of rain.

Corn condition declined over the past week, with 17% of the crop now rated as poor to very poor. Forty-three percent was rated fair, while 36% was rated good and 4% was excellent.

Planting of soybeans and sorghum is nearly complete.
