Stoecklein addressed the ever-changing Kansas weather, official opening of the Lair White House museum, and the many free events the fair has to offer.
Suspect in rash of local burglaries makes initial court appearance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The man suspected of committing 20 local burglaries back in May made a first appearance in Reno County District Court Thursday.
Joseph Paul Jones Jr. was arrested in Wichita for the warrants, but he has been housed in Sedgwick County for charges there. Jones also faces charges in Lyon County for alleged crimes in Emporia. He also has a violation of his parole for crimes in Missouri.
The state alleges that some time overnight on May 13 or May 14, the 20 local businesses were entered by prying open doors or breaking the glass windows with a crow bar. Jones allegedly cut the telephone lines on several of the businesses before making entry.
During the investigation, police found surveillance video of the suspect entering Papa Murphy’s Pizza located in the State Fair Shopping Center at 2420 N. Main. Pictures were taken from the video and sent to the media including Hutch Post.
On May 15, police were apparently able to identify Jones as the suspect. Jones is from the area of Springfield, Mo., and has several prior convictions for burglary and theft there.
His bond is set at $50,000 and he was asked if he had any comments on bond and he stated “no,” but he did indicate he wanted the Reno County case to proceed as quickly as possible. So, Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen set a preliminary hearing date of Oct. 6.
Suspect in aggravated assault case set for sentencing Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 27-year-old Hutchinson man who entered pleas to three assault charges is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
Lucas Hall was originally charged with three counts of aggravated assault and criminal damage to property, but the state dropped some of the charges as part of a plea agreement.
Hall was convicted of hitting a vehicle multiple times with three people inside, including his ex-girlfriend, as they tried to get away from him. The incident occurred on Oct. 15 of last year and started as the victims traveled southbound on Maple from 5th. It ended near 4th & Main where Hall was arrested on the charges. The victims were apparently trying to reach the law enforcement center to get away from Hall. There was damage to the vehicle the three were in as a result of Hall allegedly striking it.
The sentencing is scheduled in front of Judge Trish Rose.
Hutch man’s sentencing in drug cases set again for Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man who entered pleas in two felony drugs cases and a misdemeanor case involving interference with law enforcement is scheduled for sentencing Friday after Judge Tim Chambers decided he wanted more information two weeks ago on whether he could give Shane Kinast a border box finding and grant community corrections.
The state wants a prison sanction while his attorney, Shaun Lautz, wants a border box finding and community corrections.
There is some question as to whether Kinast has an alcohol or drug addiction problem. Judge Chambers says he has to find there is some type of addiction to rule a border box finding. Kinast has apparently passed all of his drug testing over the past year.
It was on July 17, 2013, when the Reno County Drug Unit served a search warrant on a home at 1016 N. Van Buren and Kinast was arrested along with Dwayne Porting and Elisha Bozarth.
Officers allegedly found a bag on the couch of the home on Van Buren that contained a small zip-close bag with a crystal substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. Also in the bag were more zip-close bags and a digital scale.
He was also convicted of interference with law enforcement in another case and a case where he was busted for possession of methamphetamine.
The sentencing is scheduled for Friday.
Hearing for man charged with injuring infant child continued

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The preliminary hearing in a case involving an injured child, which got started a week ago Tuesday, was supposed to resume Wednesday, but the defense requested a continuance to review some video in the case they apparently had not seen.
So, Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen rescheduled the hearing for Alexis Silva and the new date is Sept. 15, according to District Attorney Keith Schroeder. He is expected to call one more witness when the preliminary hearing resumes.
Silva is charged with reckless aggravated battery as well a two alternate counts of abuse of a child. The theory for the first abuse count includes shaking of the child. The second includes cruel or inhuman corporal punishment. Assuming the case gets all the way to a jury trial, the jury would have to decide which one of the three charges he’s guilty of, or find him not guilty of anything.
The injuries to the child, according to doctors, consisted of a fracture to the left leg of the 3 month old, but also other injuries that included bruising on both cheeks, fractured ribs and retinal hemorrhaging in one eye which they say would indicate possible shaking of the child.
The crimes charged against Silva are alleged to have occurred sometime between August and October of last year.
Again, the resumption of the hearing has been continued to later this month.
Two arrested for drug distribution fail to show for preliminary hearing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The two people arrested back on May 27 on suspicion of distributing illegal drugs were scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the case Wednesday morning, but both were no shows. That led to Judge Joe McCarville issuing a bench warrant for 37-year-old Jennifer Ramsey and 31-year-old Bryan Butler. The bond on the warrant for Butler is $40,000, while the bond for Ramsey’s warrant for is $55,000.
Both are charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute and no tax stamp. Ramsey is also charged with possession of marijuana and personal use drug paraphernalia. She also has two other cases that were scheduled for a preliminary hearing as well.
Butler is also charged with possession of stolen property, a Hyundai Tiburon, and driving while suspended, an alleged habitual violator.
The complaint indicates they may have been attempting to distribute at least 100 grams of methamphetamine, but less than one kilogram.
The arrest of the two came during a traffic stop in the 100 block of North Plum.
Two people arrested formally charged in drug distribution case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two people arrested back on Aug. 21 on drug related charges were scheduled for hearing on Wednesday, but apparently appeared Tuesday instead.
42-year-old Robyn Ramsey and 50-year-old Lisa McHaley were both arrested after a search warrant was served on their home in the 100 block of East Campbell.
Ramsey is now charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana with a prior conviction and possession of drug paraphernalia.
McHaley is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package.
Officers says they found a zip-close bag of a crystal substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed about 20 grams. It was allegedly found in McHaley’s purse. There was also a lot of cash in that purse as well, according to the arrest report. Officers say they also found packaging materials, a scale and owe sheets in her bedroom.
Also located in the bedroom, underneath a pillow where Ramsey sleeps, was a black pouch that contained a small plastic bag with about 1.8 grams of suspected meth, a small plastic bag that contained suspected marijuana, a cut straw and a used syringe.
With the charges filed, the two will appear in front Judge Joe McCarville as part of a waiver-status docket on Sept. 17.
