Turon Man bound over in attempted murder case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A 25-year-old Turon man jailed back on April 2, after a domestic altercation with a woman in that city was back in court Thursday morning for a preliminary hearing where he was bound over for trial by Judge Tim Chambers. 
The state added an additional count against Tyler Truhlar of criminal threat. That’s in addition to charges of attempted second-degree murder or, in the alternative, aggravated battery, as well as a charge of aggravated burglary. The attempted murder charge is a level three person felony with a sentencing range of 55 to 247 months in prison.
The alleged victim testified that she told Truhlar she didn’t want him to come over after he had sent her a text, but says she later heard something at the door. When she opened it, he was on her porch. They began arguing and he then allegedly punched her as many as 20 times, striking her on the left side of her face. He also allegedly struck her in the nose. He then allegedly started choking her. He eventually went into her bathroom and began throwing up. She then ran from the home trying to get to her landlord’s home. She says she ran outside to call 911 and he followed her and started calling her names and threatening to kill her, saying he didn’t care if he was going to jail. She says at some point, he slammed the left side of her head into the pavement a couple of times. She told the court that she was taken to Pratt Regional Medical Center for treatment after the incident. She says he was drunk and added to his diabetes, made him nuts.
The state played the 911 tape from the call. You could hear her and later him when he caught up with her.
Reno County Sheriff Deputy Lee Johnson also testified during the hearing Thursday. He told of being dispatched to the area on the report of an aggravated battery in progress. When he arrived, EMS was in the process of treating her at the home in Turon. He also testified to talking with the suspect who he says still had blood on his right hand after he was read his Miranda rights.
The two had dated at some point and the victim testified that he didn’t like her texting or talking with other men.
The judge questioned whether either side had a problem with him also being the trial judge since he held the preliminary hearing. Both sides didn’t indicate they had a problem.
Truhlar is currently free on a $6,750 bond. He’ll be arraigned on the charges in front of Judge Chambers on September 2.
Wichita man enters pleas to charges in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old Wichita man who was listed as an absconder from his community corrections for nearly a year and facing additional charges here in Reno County after he allegedly ran from law enforcement trying to serve warrants for his arrest entered pleas as charged Thursday morning.
Dylan Burgess has been on corrections for possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement and no tax stamp.
He entered pleas to felony flee and elude, driving while suspended, reckless driving, and interference with law enforcement in one case and two counts of failing to register as a drug offender in another.
Apparently he was spotted back on June 4, inside a store at 30th & Lorraine. When a deputy arrived, he was in a vehicle with a female passenger. The deputy positioned his vehicle in front of the one Burgess was driving, but he placed his vehicle in reverse and accelerated between two vehicles striking one with the rear passenger side of his vehicle. He then allegedly took off through the parking lot and north on Elm with speeds reaching 70 mph. He then went west on 36th and then north again on Maple. As other vehicles tried to turn left, officials say he then went through a private lawn, got back on the road and turned west, but came to a dead end. He then apparently stopped his vehicle, got out and walked toward the deputy and gave himself up. He was then taken into custody.
He will be sentenced on the charges next month.
Hutch man scheduled for sentencing Friday in five cases

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 29-year-old Hutchinson man who entered pleas in five cases against him is scheduled for sentencing Friday afternoon.
Arthur Adams entered “no contest” pleas in front Judge Tim Chambers with most involving the distribution or possession of drugs with the first case going back to 2012. There were also two cases where he was in possession of a firearm, one being a shotgun with the serial numbers scratched off and, in another case, he was in possession of a 45-caliber handgun. Adams has a previous conviction for being in possession of drugs for a case from 2007, which makes it unlawful for him to be in possession of any type of weapon.
Both sides will recommend concurrent sentencing in each case with a standard mid-range number in the sentencing grid box. However, some cases will run consecutive to each other. Of course the final decision remains in the hands of Judge Chambers.
