Three-hole playoff decides individual champion

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rain may have forced the individual race to fewer rounds, but stiff competition between Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans and Stanford’s Cameron Wilson extended the tilt once more.

Both players finished their respective rounds at 6-under-par. Wilson edged Schniederjans on the third and final hole of the playoff. “It’s incredible, so glad I made that putt, this is surreal,” Wilson said.

Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, the top-ranked amateur player in the world, would have beaten Tiger Woods’ career win record at Stanford with an individual title Monday, but fell all the way to fifteenth. Lanny Wadkins of the Golf Channel said Rodgers “got a little out of sync in his swing and had a hard time judging the distance with some of his shots.  Normally he handles the heat really well.”

Regardless, Stanford enters Tuesday’s quarterfinal as the No. 1 seed after shooting 13 under as a team. Faced with a moment to bask in the glory of an individual title, Wilson opted to keep his eye on the team prize.  “I’ve got to mention my team first.  I gotta say how proud I am of my guys so far.  There is a lot of golf left, but I am really happy for all of the guys,” Wilson said in preparation for Tuesday’s rigor.

Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, UCLA, SMU and Illinois will round out the playing field vying for a title. The Crimson Tide and Tigers were the only other teams, including the Cardinal, to finish under par. The Cowboys broke even to snatch the 4 spot, while Illinois made the cut at plus 5.

Quarterfinal Match Play begins at 7 a.m. Tuesday, with Semifinals slated to tee off at 1 p.m.

 

Cardinal clubs leading championship charge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Stanford’s Cameron Wilson is leading the Cardinal charge for an NCAA Golf Championship after two rounds of play.

Stanford leads the field after two completed rounds with a total score of 548. Wilson is tied for the individual lead with South Carolina’s Will Starke, shooting six under.

Wilson’s teammate, the top-ranked amateur player in the world, Patrick Rodgers is one stroke behind after shooting a round-low 67, and is tied third in the individual race. Rodgers seeks his seventh career victory, which would etch his name above Tiger Woods in Cardinal history.

Rain delays Friday postponed second-round tee times for some teams. Texas, Texas A&M and Auburn are among the list of teams with early tee times Sunday because of the delays. Darkness ended Saturday play early.

South Carolina and Auburn are in the hunt for a team championship thanks to Will Starke (-6) and Matt Gilchrest (-3), respectively.

As a team, the Gamecocks shot 272 in the first round, anything below 276 in the second round will help them trump Stanford’s total. Auburn could make a run at the team lead by duplicating its first-round total of 274. Stanford took the lead after the second round by impressively cutting fourteen stokes off its opening mark.

Play continues bright and early Sunday with a 7 a.m. tee time.

HCC Star named Vegas MVP

LAS VEGAS — A star from the East made his name known in the West.

Hutchinson Community College Men’s Basketball standout Kadeem Allen was named the NJCAA Coaches Association All-Star Game MVP. Allen posted a double-double without committing a single turnover. He was 7 of 15 shooting from the floor whilst dropping 18 points and nabbing 10 rebounds, four of them offensively. Allen reminded spectators of his unselfishness by dishing six assists.

Allen, the Wilmington, N.C. native, made a name for himself in the Midwest by repeating as a First-Team All-American and becoming the first Blue Dragon to ever record a triple-double.

Teammates with Allen for the All-Star Game included National Champion Forward Johnny Zuppardo from Jones County who scored 21 points. Willie Wiley of Vincennes and Lester Medford of Indian Hills helped Allen’s team win 123-106. Wiley contributed 5 rebounds while Medford, the NJCAA Tournament Bud Obee Outstanding Small Player recipient, knocked down 17 points.

Allen will play Division 1 Basketball next year, in the West nonetheless, at the University of Arizona.

No Naadir, no worries

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Naadir Tharpe is gone, but Bill Self says his team will be fine. The Jayhawks not only return capable guards Frank Mason, Conner Frankamp and Wayne Selden, but can now tout the commitment of point guard Devonte Graham.

Graham is a 6-foot-2 guard from Brewster Academy who chose the University of Kansas Friday over North Carolina State. Jason Smith, Graham’s coach at Brewster, tweeted the announcement.Devonte Graham Twit Pic

 

The Graham committal comes just one day after Myles Turner chose Texas over Kansas. Bill Self says missing on Turner is no big deal as the Jayhawks return five post players next season.

Caitlin is originally from the tiny town of Herington, KS and moved down to the Hutchinson/Wichita area to be a student at Wichita State University. (Go Shockers!) After playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter third grade play, she knew her life would never be the same. Ten years later, she was enrolling to be a Theater Performance Major at WSU. She’s not your typical theater kid because Broadway is not her end goal. Caitlin holds such a passion for music that during the summer of 2013, she decided to intern for Clear Channel Communications in Wichita, and absolutely fell in love with radio.
 
In July of 2014, she will finally have her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance and couldn’t be happier. In Caitlin’s free time, you can find her doing just about anything: from working on her bits for her stand up comedy routines, to binging Netflix and eating cupcakes, to working on her book that will one day (hopefully soon) be published. She loves meeting new people and you can definitely follow her on Twitter!

Daren is a Hutchinson native who attended Central Christian before graduating from Pretty Prairie High School. At Pretty Prairie, Daren was a three-sport athlete in Football, Basketball and Track. He served as the Senior Class Vice President and was nominated Homecoming King. Daren won the Class 1A Improvised Duet Acting State Championship with his partner David Painter. Daren performed in the school play his junior and senior year. He played the lead character in Cheaper by the Dozen the same year Steve Martin played the role in Hollywood.

Daren moved on to Hutchinson Community College where he earned his Associate Degree in Arts. While at HCC, Daren was active in theatre and broadcasting. He played Moliere’s Tartuffe and appeared in Chicago, The Tempest, Loose Change Players Improv and Honk! Daren was the Sports Anchor on HCC Channel 13 and hosted his own sports show with players and coaches. His Sportscast won first place in the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Awards, finishing ahead of entries from the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.

Daren then earned his Bachelor of Science in Journalism at the University of Kansas. At KU, he hosted Jayhawk Sports Talk on KUJH-TV, anchored the television sportscast and hosted The Big Finish on KJHK radio. Daren received four more KAB awards for his work in radio and television, including Best Entertainment Program in the state for JST.
