David Allen Smiley, 78, of Hutchinson, died January 20, 2018, at Via Christi, Saint Francis Campus, Wichita. He was born November 10, 1939, in Hutchinson, the son of Roy and Elener (Mesker) Smiley.
David graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958 and served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He worked for nearly 40 years for H & N Railroad. After his retirement, David worked part-time as a custodian for USD 308. He was a member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and Crossroads Christian Church.
On October 3, 1970, David married Ellen Ann Wintamute. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include: daughters, Lisa Johnson and husband Chris, and Tricia Campbell and husband Dusty, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jacob Smiley, Kennedy Johnson, Joshua Campbell; great-granddaughter, Khloee Smith; sister, Phyllis Viegra of Hutchinson; brother, Jim Smiley of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Wayne Pittman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. The casket will remain closed. Friends may sign the book from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. Arlene V. Bowser, 96, died January 18, 2018, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Facility, Johnson, KS. She was born November 16, 1921 in Hutchinson, to Curtis B. and Grace B. (Tolbert) Rodarmel.
She was a homemaker and helped farm alongside her husband for many years. Arlene was a Sterling resident from 1944 to 1985 before moving to Hutchinson. In more recent years she moved to Johnson, KS.
Arlene married Alex Walton on December 17, 1948 in Wichita, KS. They divorced in 1979. She married Carl Bowser on April 4, 1981 in Wellington, CO. He died October 3, 2001.
Survivors include: sons, Raymond Walton and wife Jo, Bruce Walton ; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne Rodarmel.
She was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers.
Irl Emerson Palmer, 93, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born June 12, 1924, in Hutchinson, the son of Irl E. Sr. and Ola Maude (Adtkinson) Palmer.
Irl graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1942, attended Hutchinson Community College and Michigan State University. He was a salesman at Winchester Packing Corporation for fifty years, retiring in 1986. Irl was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, Boy Scouts of America, and Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Irl proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
On May 31, 1947, he married Betty Ann Brandon in Hutchinson. She died June 27, 2013.
Irl is survived by: son, Mark Palmer of Wichita; daughter, Martha Mick and husband Tom of Tampa, FL; daughter-in-law, Becky Palmer of Katy, TX; sisters-in-law, Ginny Palmer of Alaska and Cordy Brandon of Oklahoma City, OK; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Mike Palmer; brother, Bob; sister, Elizabeth Snyder and husband Victor; brother-in-law and wife, Cecil and Chris Brandon; and brother-in-law, Allen Brandon.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Wesley Towers Evans Chapel, 3709 Asbury Place, Hutchinson with the Reverend Michael L. McGuire presiding. Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Honor Guard. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Freshman Dejanae Roebuck scored six of her career-high 23 points in overtime to lead the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team to a 66-64 victory over Cloud County on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

The victory split the season series with the Thunderbirds. The Blue Dragons improve to 16-3 overall and 12-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cloud County falls to 12-6 and 9-6.
Roebuck posted her ninth double-double of the season to lead the Blue Dragons. She was 11 of 17 shooting with one 3-pointer. Roebuck also had 13 rebounds. In overtime, Roebuck was 3 of 3 from the field with two rebounds.
Neither team had more than a six-point lead in a game with 18 lead changes and 11 ties. In the fourth quarter alone, there were seven lead changes and three tied.
Cloud County took a 56-54 lead after two free throws from Courtney Hammel with 1:52 to go in regulation. The Blue Dragons then had three opportunities to tie or take the lead and finally converted when Alicia Brown drove to the basket and scored to tie the game at 56 with 34.9 seconds remaining.
After trading baskets to start overtime – the first overtime game in series history – Kelsey Brett hit a 3-pointer and Roebuck scored after an offensive rebound to lead 63-58 with 3:35 left in regulation. With Hutch leading 66-64 in the final seconds of overtime, Cloud County got two chances to tie the game, but missed on both attempts as time ran out.
The Blue Dragons were 3 of 5 shooting in overtime. Cloud County is 2 of 6 in the extra session.
Hutchinson shot 27 of 68 for the game (39.7 percent), hitting 6 of 31 from 3-point range and a season-low six free throws on eight attempts. The Blue Dragons out-rebounded Cloud County 39-36. The Dragons had 22 turnovers.
Camille Awa Baud had 23 points to lead Cloud County. Kelsi Mueller had 12 points. Awa Baud and Mueller had four 3-points each. The Blue Dragons held Cloud County’s leading scorer Scout Frame to three points, 14 points under her scoring average.
The Thunderbirds shot 21 of 58 from the field (36.2 percent), hitting 8 of 20 from 3-point range and 14 of 17 from the foul line. The T-Birds had 23 turnovers.
The Blue Dragons trailed 9-5 early and scored six unanswered points to take an 11-9 lead after a Mickens basket with 2:19 to play in the first quarter. A Roebuck putback with 44 seconds left in the period gave Hutch a 15-13 lead, but Cloud took a one-point lead after one period with a 3-pointer from Awa Baud.
Cloud County had two five-point leads in the second quarter at 24-19 and 26-21 after a Courtney Keech bucket with 5:18 to play in the half. The Blue Dragons immediately tied the game on a Brianna Bradshaw 3-pointer and Tia Bradshaw 2-pointer to knot the score at 26 with 4:41 remaining. That was the front end of an 11-0 Blue Dragon run. Kayla Barber capped the run with 1:46 left to give Hutch a 32-26 lead. Cloud County scored the final six points of the half to know the score at 32.
Roebuck hit a 3-pointer and 2-pointer to start the third quarter, but Cloud County scored nine points in a row to take a 41-37 lead after an Awa Baud layup with 3:22 left. The game was tied at 42 after three quarters.
Cramer hit a 12-foot jumper to give Hutch a 52-51 lead with 3:46 to go in the fourth quarter. Awa Baud nailed a 3-pointer with 2:29 left to give Cloud a two-point lead. Roebuck scored inside with 2:12 left to tie the game at 54. Hammel’s free throws with 1:52 left again gave Cloud a two-point lead and then Brown’s bucket tied the game at 56. Each team had one more possession in regulation. Cloud turned the ball over and Brett had a good look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was just off the mark sending the game to overtime.
Hutchinson completes its four-game homestand on Wednesday against the Pratt Beavers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sophomore J.J. Rhymes reached the 30-point plateau for the fifth time in his career to help the No. 13-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team avenge a November overtime loss to Cloud County.

Rhymes scored 38 points to power the Blue Dragons to a 95-63 victory over Cloud County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
Defeating Cloud County for the 11th consecutive time at the Sports Arena, Hutchinson improves to 16-3 overall and 12-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons still trail first-place Barton by one game in the conference standings. Cloud County, which defeated Hutchinson 82-79 in overtime on November 15 in Concordia, falls to 6-12 overall and 4-11 in the league.
Rhymes got off to a great start scoring 16 of Hutchinson’s first 21 points. He finished 13 of 23 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. Rhymes added seven rebounds.
Rhymes’ 38 points tied for the eighth-most points scored by a Blue Dragon in a game, matching Roy “Pooh” Hairston (1993) and Nate Brumfield (2006). Rhymes moved past by Akbar Hoffman and Josh Gonner into 18th place on the Blue Dragon career scoring list with 981 points.
The Blue Dragons shot 56 percent to open a 42-27 lead by halftime. For the game, Hutchinson shot 33 of 63 (52.4 percent), hitting 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 25 of 34 from the free-throw line.
The Blue Dragons had their second-largest rebound margin, out-rebounding Cloud County 57-32. The Dragons had 21 assists, but 21 turnovers.
Bandoo had 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Sal Nuhu posted his first double-double of the season and second of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Curtis Hollis and Rheaquone Taylor had eight points each and James Rojas added seven points.
The Blue Dragons held Cloud County to 32.5 percent shooting (26 of 80), including 4 of 24 from 3-point range and 7 of 13 from the foul line. The Thunderbirds had 14 turnovers and an opponent season high 10 blocked shots.
JaVary Christmas had 15 points to lead the Thunderbirds. Alvin Thompson had 12 points and Ramion Burt Jr. finished with 10 points.
The Blue Dragons led wire to score, scoring the first seven points of the game. When Rhymes converted a three-point play with 12:24 to go in the half to reach the 16-point mark for the game, the Dragons led 21-9. Cloud County pulled back within six at 22-16 with 9:21 remaining in the half, but Hutchinson answered the challenge with an 11-2 run after Rob Whitfield’s 3-pointer gave the Dragons a 33-18 lead with 6:23 to play in the half.
The Dragons pushed the lead to 19 late in the half on back-to-back dunks from Hollis and Bandoo. Cloud County scored the final four points of the half and Hutch led 42-27 at halftime.
Cloud County started the second half on a 10-4 run to pull within 46-37 after a Thompson basket with 16:50 to play in the game. The Dragons retaliated with a 9-2 run to push the lead back to 16 when Kai Mitchell‘s jumper gave the Dragons a 55-39 lead with 14:10 remaining.
Hutch’s lead hovered between 14 and 18 points for the next four minutes. Leading 65-51, the Blue Dragons pulled away with 10-straight points and an overall 20-6 run. Rhymes’ putback dunk capped the run and gave the Blue Dragons an 85-57 lead with 4:16 to play in the game.
The Blue Dragons close out their four-game homestand on Wednesday against Pratt.

COLBY, Kan. — Hutch High missed just one shot from the line in the 4th quarter en route to 14 freebies in an 8-point victory Friday night.
The Salthawks (3-7) doubled up the Eagles (5-8) of Pine Creek (Colorado Springs, Colorado) after one stanza in the consolation bracket of the Orange & Black Classic.
Hutch High jumped out to a 16-8 advantage and saw Pine Creek close that gap to 5 by halftime.
KC Wolf visited the Orange & Black Classic Friday night.
That lead dwindled to just 1 at 39-38 after three.
The Salthawks then used strong free throw shooting to distance themselves from the competition. HHS knocked down 14-of-15 free throws in the 4th quarter; 14 of the team’s 21 fourth-quarter points came from the charity stripe. HHS finished 25-of-33 from the line.
Senior Davion Vigil hit 6 straight FTs in that stretch while his classmate, Tre’Vaughn Jones, went 5-for-6. Jones finished with 10 points.
Sophomore Elisha Turner also finished with 10 points, while Senior Max Ontjes hit two treys in the 4th to finish with 9 points.
Hutch High is now 1-1 in the Orange & Black Classic and will face Scott City (4-6) Saturday at 2 p.m. in the 5th Place Match.
Scott City defeated Lotus School for Excellence 52-33 in a shortened contest. The game was called with 5:24 left in the 4th when Lotus HC Dee Jackson sent his team to the locker room in protest of an offensive foul.
The Beavers and Salthawks will face each other Saturday afternoon with Glen Grunwald calling the action from Colby on Country 102.9.

Orpha was born November 12, 1926, to Peter and Barbara (Yoder) Wagler, and was raised on the family’s farm near Partridge.
She attended Fairmount Grade School, and attended Hesston College. She also served with Mennonite Voluntary Service in Gulfport, Mississippi.
She married Harry L. Miller on August 28, 1949. Following their marriage, Orpha and Harry spent six months helping to build a church in Glen Flora, Wisconsin. They returned to Reno County in 1950 to the farm near Partridge where Orpha was born and raised. Together, Orpha and Harry raised their family and farmed there until retirement in 1997. Orpha was a member of the Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church, where, for many years, she taught women’s Sunday School classes.
Surviving are: her children, Yvonne Miller, Leon (Holly) Miller, Jean Ann (Wesley) Schrock, Michael (Lois) Miller, Erlis (Gesine) Miller, and Arlyn (Loretta) Miller; and her grandchildren, Peter (Alesha) Miller, John (Jessica) Miller, Elizabeth (Michael) Linscheid, Catherine Miller, Sarah Miller, Michael Miller, Laura Miller, Alexander Miller, Daniel Miller, and Caroline Miller.
Orpha was preceded in death by: her husband, Harry; parents; sisters, Laura Miller, Mary and Martha Wagler (twin infants); brothers, Raymond Wagler, Willie Wagler, Mahlon Wagler, and stillborn infant.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Friday, January 19, and the funeral will be at 10:30 on Saturday, January 20, both at Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church.

Glen Michael ‘Mike’ West, 63, died Jan. 17, 2018, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born July 20, 1954, in Ellinwood, the son of Craymon and Jennie (Raner) West.
He graduated from Nuremberg-American High School, Nuremberg, Germany, in 1974. Mike served in the U.S. Army and retired in 2014 from UPS, as Operations Supervisor, working there 37 years.
Mike married Phyllis Wilkin in 1975, they were married for 7 years. He then married Robin Westfall on March 1, 1986, in Hutchinson. They were married for 26 years. He is survived by: son, Logan West and wife Amanda of Hutchinson; daughters, Michelle Shultz and husband Jim of Hutchinson, Jenny Frazier and husband Chris of Bonner Springs; brothers, Lloyd and Nolan of Hutchinson, Jim of Winfield; sister, Lora Pisar of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Alyssa, Myranda, Peighton, Lauren, Grayson, Kylee, Zade and Layla; great- grandchildren, Angel, Gabriel, Zayden and Sofia; and the Miller family, Matt, Lori, Haley and Macy. He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, John and Ronnie; sisters, Sandra and Glenda; and a granddaughter, Bristol Grace Frazier.

Dr. Raymond E. ‘Ray’ Youmans, 93, of Hutchinson, formerly of Hays, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born August 30, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Raymond Orlando and Irene (Brian) Youmans.
Ray graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1941, received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Denver. Ray was a Professor of Education at Fort Hays State University from 1958-1992. Ray loved to learn as he also attended the University of Kansas and San Diego State Law School. He also enjoyed being involved throughout his community and abroad. Some of Ray’s civic duties included serving on the USD # 489 Hays School Board for six years, President of College of West Africa, through the United Methodist Missions Council, Boy Scouts, the NEA, and extensive involvement in AARP. Ray was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays, where he served as a lay leader, Sunday school teacher, and lay preacher, and he attended First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson.
On December 16, 1951, he married Marian Alice Schoenfeld in Kansas City, Kansas. They shared 66 years of marriage. Ray is survived by: wife, Marian of Hutchinson, children, Barbara Youmans of Hutchinson, William Raymond Youmans (Joan Flax) of Centennial, Colorado; granddaughter, Kylie Anne Youmans of Centennial, Colorado; siblings, Ron Youmans (Mildred), Robert Youmans, Roberta Sanderson, Roger Youmans; and beloved cat, KoKo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Russell.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Bones Nay officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
