Levi D. Janzen, 69, died January 6, 2018, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born October 15, 1948, the son of Abraham H. & Elizabeth
(Hiebert) Janzen. Levi was a graduate of Buhler High School and a retired truck driver for Shears-APAC. He married Mary Jane Brozek on April 14, 1979, in Hutchinson.
He is survived by wife, Mary, of the home; daughters, Michelle Bird (Dale), of Wichita, Marlo Janzen of Hutchinson; sons, Aldon
Isenberg (Alma) of Kansas City, KS, Jimmy Isenberg, Steve Isenberg and his fiancé Jane Herdman of Hutchinson; brother,
Delbert and wife Drinda Collins of Tulsa; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; brother, Kenneth; sister, Lyla Moore; daughter-in-law, Marsha Isenberg.

Kenneth LeRoy Peterson, 73, was promoted to glory Saturday, January 6, 2018, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born September 9, 1944, in Bay City, Michigan, the son of Melvin and Elodia (Roup) Peterson. Kenneth graduated from Bay City high school, The Salvation Army College for Officer’s Training in Chicago, Illinois, and received a Master’s in Counseling from Friends University in Wichita. He served in the United States Navy from 1962-1965. Kenneth served as a pastor in the Salvation Army for 15 years, worked as a drug counselor, and for Doskocil Foods. He retired as a machinist at Eaton Corp. and then worked parttime for Dillons Stores.
On January 22, 1966, Kenneth married Carolyn Mae McCalip. She died October 11, 2016.
He is survived by: children, Randy and Wendy Eldridge of Hutchinson, Kenny and Deana Peterson of Frontenac, Judd and Heidi McCullers of Sterling,Donnie and Sharon Peterson of Hutchinson; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many foster children; and brother, Melvin and Nita Peterson of Bay City, Michigan.
Kenneth was preceded in death by: his wife; parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson, with Pastor Mark Hall officiating. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Riding an 11-game winning streak, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team made a return to the NJCAA National Rankings on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons are No. 18 in this week’s Division I Women’s Rankings. This is the first time in four regular-season rankings that the Dragons are in the Top 25. Hutchinson was No. 12 in the preseason poll, but consecutive road losses in mid-November cost the Dragons their spot in the rankings.
Since then, the Blue Dragons have put together an 11-game winning streak. Within that streak are wins over nationally ranked teams – then No. 21 Florida Southwestern State and No. 18 Cowley. Hutchinson goes into Wednesday’s road game at Independence with a 13-2 overall record.
When the Blue Dragons dropped out of the Top 25 earlier this season, that snapped a streak of 89 consecutive times in the national rankings. Hutchinson had appeared in 101 of 104 national rankings before dropping out in December.
The Dragons are one of three Jayhawk Conference teams to appear in this week’s rankings. Seward County (13-2) is No. 13, then Hutchinson at No. 18 and Cowley at No. 21. Cowley fell three spots after the loss last Wednesday to the Blue Dragons.
Florida Southwestern State, which Hutch defeated 60-56 on December 30 in Fort Myers, Florida, is No. 22.
Shelton State takes over as the new No. 1 team in the country. Gulf Coast State drops two spots to No. 3.
Bette ‘Kay’ Horse, 75, of Hutchinson, died Friday, January 5, 2018. She was born November 21, 1942, in Wichita, the daughter of Alden Floyd and Ann Zola (Landess) Triplett.
She was a 1960 graduate of Clearwater High School and a member of Medora Community Bible Church. Bette was a designer for Hutchinson Floral.
She was married to Karl D. Bates. He died March 18, 1999. On June 16, 1984, she married Chester Wallace Horse, in Hutchinson. He survives. Other survivors include: children, Sonja HuntingHorse of New Mexico, Melanie Wilke and husband Steve of Oklahoma, Trava Hoover and husband Richard of Wichita, Kelly Bates and wife Janet of Clearwater, Melissa Sylvester and husband Geno of Wichita, Matt Bates and wife Kim of Haysville, Karla Carson and husband Craig of Ozark, MO, and Grant Bates and wife Amy of Oak Grove; MO, 21 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, at Medora Community Bible Church, 8311 N. Medora Rd., Hutchinson, with Pastors Ron Mandeville, Wayne Johnson and Jonathan Stewart presiding. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Myrel A. Meadows, 89, of South Hutchinson, died January 4, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born November 30, 1928, in Seneca, MO, to Arthur Posey and Saphrona Ann (Robertson) Meadows.
Myrel graduated from Coldwater High School in 1947 and Salt City Business College. He was an engineering technician for Farmland Industries. Myrel was a 50-year member of the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Myrel was of the Methodist faith.
On August 18, 1950, he married Margaret Ann Edwards in Hutchinson. She died December 11, 2009.
Myrel is survived by: daughters, Linda Meadows of Sylvia and Tonia E. Abdul-Kader and husband Fathi of Wichita; grandchildren, Sammy Abdul-Kader and wife Vickie, Nabil Abdul-Kader and wife Michelle, and Deena Shearer and husband Chad; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Sylvia Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M. and military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Donna Bowles, 74, died January 2, 2018, at her home in Hutchinson. She was born May 19, 1943, in Hutchinson to Henry H. ‘Bill’ and Letha (Koehn) Stanley.
Donna graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961. She worked at Lowen Corporation and for Hospice of Reno County. After retirement, she was a ‘Book Buddy’ for the Boys and Girls Club, helped with Toys for Tots, and was a longtime volunteer for Hospice House. She enjoyed tennis and was an avid golfer.
On November 26, 1966, she married Robert L. ‘Bob’ Bowles in Junction City. He died September 26, 2017.
Donna is survived by: daughter, Amanda Goetz and husband Jay of Overland Park; two grandchildren; and a brother, David Stanley and wife Sherry of Hutchinson.
She was preceded in death by: her parents and a son, Darin Bowles.
Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Taylor’s Cabin, located at Dillon Nature Center, 3002 E. 30th Avenue, Hutchinson. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Charles K. Campbell’s feature film All or Nothin’ is showing at the Barron Theatre in Pratt on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
The film, based on events in 1853, depicts the mission to transport an enslaved family via the Underground Railroad to Canada.
All or Nothin’ also follows the heroic efforts of Laura Haviland in Haviland, Kansas. The film will also be shown at Friends Church in Haviland on Monday, Jan. 15.
Sophomores J.J. Rhymes and Devonte Bandoo combined for 56 points and the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team rebounded from Wednesday’s loss at Cowley.
The Blue Dragons reached the century mark for the fourth time this season and earned their 17th-consecutive victory over the Allen Red Devils in a 103-75 Jayhawk Conference victory on Saturday at the Sports Arena, Hutchinson’s first home game since December 9.

Hutchinson improves to 13-2 overall and maintains its share of first place in the Jayhawk Conference at 9-2. Allen falls to 5-10 and 3-8. The Blue Dragons travel to Independence on Wednesday.
Rhymes became the 22nd Blue Dragon in history to reach the 900 career-point plateau with a game-high 31-point effort against the Red Devils. Rhymes was 13 of 23 shooting and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Rhymes added five rebounds and four assists.
Bandoo poured in a career-high 25 points, hitting a career-best five 3-pointers in seven attempts. Bandoo just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Rheaquone Taylor was the only other Blue Dragon in double figures with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists. James Rojas had eight points, while Kai Mitchell had seven points and a season-high 12 rebounds with six assists and a career-high-tying four blocked shots.
The Blue Dragons shot 52.6 percent overall (40 of 76), hitting 6 of 12 from long range and 17 of 23 from the free-throw line. The Dragons owned a 55-37 rebounding advantage and tied a season high for the third time this season with 10 blocked shots.
Tevin Townsend hit 4 of 7 from 3-point range to lead the Red Devils with 20 points. Tyler Williams had 12 and Jacob Patterson had 11 points.
Allen was 25 of 77 shooting overall (32.5 percent), hitting 7 of 32 from 3-point range, only 1 of 13 in the second half, and was 18 of 24 from the free-throw line.
The Blue Dragons scored the first five points of the game and never relinquished the lead.
Hutch built an 11-3 lead after a Rhymes drive to the hoop with 14:25 to play in the opening half. A 3-pointer by Jordan Marshall pulled Allen within 13-8 with 13:26 remaining. The lead dwindled to two at 16-14 before Mitchell hit a jumper in the lane with 10:04 to go in the half. Allen struck again from deep from Townsend to pull the Devils within 20-17 with 9:15 to go.
The Blue Dragons then went on an 11-0 run, getting five points from Bandoo in that stretch. Taylor’s dunk with 6:15 to play gave Hutch a 31-17 lead.
Hutch led 43-27 when the Red Devils scored seven unanswered points fast to pull within 43-34 with 53 seconds remaining in the half. Two Sal Nuhu free throws with 33 seconds left gave the Dragons a 45-34 lead at halftime. The Dragons were 18 of 40 shooting to Allen’s 10 of 40, but the Red Devils had six 3-pointers in the half.
The Blue Dragons started the second half on an 11-4 run to lead 56-38 after a Rhymes’ inside bucket with 16:26 to go. Hutch finally got the lead to 20 points on another Rhymes basket with 13:42 remaining for a 63-42 lead. Allen got within 16 points twice after that, but Hutch closed on a 28-16 run over the final 7 minutes of the game. Hutchinson shot 61.1 percent in the final 20 minutes (22 of 36).
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 41-7 all-time against Allen. … The Dragons shoot 50 percent or better in a game for the seventh time this season. … The last time Hutch reached 100 points in a game was November 18 with 109 point at Pratt.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball head coach John Ontjes earned his 300th victory on Saturday night as the Blue Dragons ran their winning streak to 11 games with a 77-54 Jayhawk Conference victory over Allen at the Sports Arena.
Ontjes reached the 300 victory mark in just 364 games. Already the Blue Dragon women’s basketball career leader in coaching victories, Ontjes becomes only the eighth Jayhawk Conference women’s basketball coach to reach the 300-win plateau.

The Blue Dragons improve to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk Conference to maintain their share of first place heading into a key road matchup on Wednesday at Independence. The Red Devils fall to 4-11 and 2-9 I league play.
Freshman Jada Mickens posted her third-consecutive and ninth-overall double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Mickens was 9 of 18 shooting from the field. She added three steals.
Sophomore Alicia Brown posted her first career double-double for Hutchinson with 16 points and a career-high-tying 12 rebounds. Brown was 5 of 7 shooting from the floor and 6 of 10 from the free-throw line.
Freshman Dejanae Roebuck just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. She also contributed four assists. Sophomore Kayla Barber came off the bench to score 11 points with four assists.
The Blue Dragons were 27 of 62 shooting (43.5 percent), going only 2 of 9 from 3-point range and 21 of 32 from the foul line. For the 15th-consecutive game, the Blue Dragons out-rebounded an opponent, dominating Allen on the boards 51-30 with 18 offensive rebounds. The Blue Dragons had 21 assists on 27 made baskets. Hutch had 14 turnovers.
Allen was held to 22 of 62 shooting (35.5 percent), going 3 of 17 from 3-point range and 7 of 11 from the free-throw line. The Red Devils had 14 turnovers.
Jakira Wilson led Allen with 18 points on 7 of 17 shooting. Destiny Pittman had 11 points.
The Blue Dragons got off to a slow offensive start, hitting only 5 of 22 shots with five turnovers in the first 10 minutes. The Dragons still managed to lead 13-10 after one quarter. Allen jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Mickens scored at the 7:35 mark to get the Dragons on the board. Trailing for most of the opening period, Alyssia Green’s steal and layup with 2:00 to go tied the game at 10. Then a Sara Cramer jumper with 1:21 to play gave the Dragons the lead for good at 12-10.
The Dragons pushed the lead to six on a Roebuck layup with 6:53 to play for a 21-15 lead. The Red Devils continued to hang around with a pair of second-quarter 3-pointers and pulled within 23-22 on an Akia Andrews steal and layup with 2:07 to go. Hutchinson responded with a 9-0 run over the next 90 seconds, taking a 31-22 lead on a Barber layup. The Dragons were 7 of 10 shooting in the second period and led 31-24 at halftime.
Hutchinson scored the first five points of the third quarter, getting a Brown putback for a 36-24 lead with 7:41 to play in the third quarter. A Kamri Summons jumper with 5:21 to go pulled Allen within 37-30, then the Blue Dragons put together another quick 9-0 run to lead 46-30 with 3:33 to go on a Mickens inside basket. The lead was a game-high 17 at 49-32 on a Brown basket with 1:51 to play, but the Red Devils scored 7 of the period’s final 9 points to pull within 51-39 after three quarters.
Thoughts of an Allen comeback were put to rest early in the fourth as Kelsey Brett knocked down a 3-pointer and Roebuck and Barber scored inside to rebuild a 19-point lead at 59-39 with 8:02 remaining. The Blue Dragons pushed the lead to 20 for the first time on two Brown free throws with 2:55 left for a 73-52 lead. The Dragons outscored Allen 26-15 in the fourth quarter, hitting 7 of 12 shots and 11 of 13 from the foul line. Allen was limited to 6 of 19 shooting in the fourth period.
