COLUMBUS, Kan. — Ellen Ione Hayes, 99, died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at the Gran Villas of the Medicalodges in Columbus. She was born October 9, 1917, in Wichita, the daughter of Jay Steward and Lillian (Kautzer) Hess.

Ellen graduated from Pretty Prairie high school, attended Pittsburg State University and graduated from Sterling College in 1963, with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school for many years, 20 of them at Union Valley elementary school in Hutchinson. Ellen was of the Methodist faith.

On October 30, 1941, she married Troy P. Hayes, in Pretty Prairie. He died on January 22, 2000. Ellen is survived by: daughter, DeAnn Sarwinski and husband, Michael of Columbus; grandchildren, Michael Sarwinski and wife, Kelly of Grove, OK, Beau Sarwinski and wife, Shelley of Galena, Brandy Sarwinski and fiancé, Glen Taylor of Pittsburg, Joseph Hayes of Hutchinson, Matthew Hayes and wife, Erica of Louisville, KY, Ashley Hayes of Overland Park ; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Marilyn Hayes of Overland Park; Gail Rassette and husband, Mark of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by: sons, Pat Hayes and Steve Hayes; daughter, Judith Hayes; brothers, Herb Hess Jr., Leland Hess, and Don Hess.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Lone Star Cemetery, Pretty Prairie. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family to receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Joyce Nadine McCoy, 91, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, July 22, 2017. She was born October 18, 1925, at Darlow, the daughter of Edward Joseph and Ethel Amy (Chase) Barnes.

She was a 1944 graduate of Buhler High School. Joyce was a member of Partridge Community Church and had been attending Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.  She played in the AAGPBL and had been inducted into Cooperstown’s Baseball Hall of Fame. Joyce’s favorite pastimes included bowling and golfing, and she had a passion for music and singing.

On August 17, 1947, she married William Gilbert McCoy in Hutchinson. He died May 6, 2000. She is survived by: daughter, Susan McClellan Bly and husband, John of Parkville, MO; granddaughter, Melinda Carpenter and husband, David of Parkville, MO; grandson, James W. McClellan of Kansas City, MO; three great-grandsons, Alexander Carpenter of Manhattan, Christopher Carpenter of Parkville, MO, and Gavin McClellan of Wichita; sister, Letha Noblitt of Hutchinson.  She was preceded in death by: her parents; son-in-law, Gary McClellan; three brothers, Rodney, Don and Ernest Barnes.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, with Rev. Richard Brooks, presiding. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Orville Eugene Scantlin, 89, died Friday, July 21, 2017. He was born March 16, 1928, in Gravette, Arkansas, the son of Leo Jason and Emily Gertrude (Cox) Scantlin.

He was a Korean War Navy veteran. He had been a motor mechanic for Barton Salt Company, and then a foreman for Adams Construction, Nickerson.

On October 11, 1953, he married Katherine Mae Dirksen in Hutchinson. She died May 21, 2005. Children surviving are: Sharon Adams and husband, Wes of Nickerson, Luella Bishop of Carthage, MO, Emily Kuntz of Nickerson, Sandra Scantlin and husband, John Proctor of Hutchinson, Harold and wife, Chana of Oklahoma City; brother, Kenneth of Harbor Island, AR; 21 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son-in-law, John Kuntz; seven sisters; and two brothers.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Tim Adrian presiding. Burial with military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard at Fairlawn Burial Park following the service. Visitation, with family present, will be from noon until service time Friday, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Maudine French, 89, died Monday, July 17, 2017, at Brookdale, Hutchinson. She was born September 2, 1927, in Kingston, Oklahoma, to George W. and Cleo Dora (Justice) Norris.

Maudine graduated from Kingston High School. Following high school, she worked in civil service for a colonel in the United States Air Force in Fort Worth, Texas. When the war was over and the air force base was closed, Maudine then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Madill, Oklahoma, eventually transferring to the Hutchinson office, when she moved here in the late 1940′s. Maudine retired as COC Supervisor from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in July 1983, after 36 years of service.

She married the love of her life, William G. French, Jr. on July 31, 1948, in Denison, Texas. He died October 22, 2015. During their 67 years of marriage, they spent time traveling with their RV to many parts of Texas, and then later taking bus trips all throughout the United States. Maudine was a gifted painter and loved to share her paintings with friends and family. Her greatest joy was her family and friends. She was a long time member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, now New Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and helping with the annual chicken barbeque and the Kids Club.

Maudine is survived by: sons, Michael (Mary) of Salado, Texas, Chris (Sheryl) of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, Janel Ullman, John French, Nikki Ferguson, Jennifer Cabaniss, Christy MacDonald, Anne Schuster; and 12 great-grandchildren, Sophia Raymos, Kayla Ullman, Alec Ullman, Avery Cabaniss, Luke Cabaniss, Skylar MacDonald, Ella MacDonald, Miles MacDonald, Natalie Ferguson, Adison Ferguson, Kennedy Schuster, and Preston Schuster. She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Bill; brothers, Denver, Everett, and Billy Ray Norris; and sister, Christine Barriga.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Dixie Voss Anders officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. The casket will be open for friends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017. Friends may sign the book, with the casket closed, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017 through Thursday, July 27, 2017.
