HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Viola ‘Pug’ Downing, 85, died Friday, July 7, 2017, at her home in Hutchinson. She was born February 13, 1932, at Inman, the daughter of Cornelius and Anna (Schmidt) Willems.

She attended Inman High School. She was a retail clerk at Duckwall’s on East 4th Street and had been a meat market wrapper for 30 years at the 5th Street Dillons. Some of Viola’s favorite things to do were: gardening, backyard bird watching, and loved sharing her never-ending sense of humor with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other friends.

On July 9, 1949, Viola was united in marriage to Harold Downing. He died December 2, 1991.

Viola is survived by: sons, Ray Downing of Hutchinson, Kurt Downing of Hays, Dan Downing and wife Betsey of Nathrop, Colorado; daughter, Lou Ann Delpire and husband Eric of Nashville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Judy Branum of Conn.; grandchildren, Christopher, Emilie and Bailie Delpire, Abby Epp and husband Brad, Isaac Downing and wife Jami; step-granddaughter, Kyndria Honoroff; great-grandchildren, Avery, Brecken and Chase Epp, Brock and Brody Downing; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; stepsons, Ronny and Larry Downing; sisters, Lillian, Agnes, Mary Ann, Martha; and brother, Arnie.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at North Inman Cemetery. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Julia Elizabeth ‘Judy’ Olsen, 88, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Collier Assisted Living, Hutchinson. She was born August 25, 1928, in Great Bend, the daughter of Eula E. (Brown) and Llewellyn T. Child. She lived in Chicago, Chappaqua, NY, and Redding, Conn., before moving to Hutchinson with her three children.

Survivors include two daughters, Julie Olsen of Denver and Barrie Olsen of New York; son, Evan Olsen of San Francisco; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Alan Nichols.

She enjoyed traveling abroad, but lived very privately. With a cynical sense of humor, Julia was highly creative and painted in a humorous and expressionist style throughout her life.

Cremation will take place and, according to her wishes, there will be no services. Memorials may be made to donor’s choice, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

LECOMPTON, Kan. — Darrell L. Corkins, 85, went home to the loving arms of Jesus his Savior. He died July 5, 2017, at his son’s home in Lecompton. Darrell was born November 7, 1931, in Liberal , the son of Fred Harvey and Velma (McCullough) Corkins.

Darrell graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949. He retired after 42 years at Cessna, where he was a tool designer and coordinator.

On November 25, 1950, Darrell married Doris Jeanne Jenkins in Hutchinson. Prior to her death, they celebrated and spent 64 years together. She died February 7, 2014.  Survivors include: children, Phillip Corkins of Lecompton, Arnold Corkins of Kimberling City, MO, Debbie Back of Wichita, and Richard Corkins of South Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Velma Marie Corkins.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Andrew Hawkinson presiding. A private interment will be in Eastside Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign the memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jan Pauls, 64, of Hutchinson, former Kansas State Representative, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital on St. Francis Campus, Wichita. She was born September 26, 1952, in Hugoton, to Paul F. and Lois (Duncan) Long.

Jan graduated from Sterling College and the University of Kansas School of Law where she received her Juris Doctorate. She worked as a private practice attorney, was a Reno County Prosecutor, District Court Judge, and served as a Kansas State Representative for the 102nd District from September 1991 to 2017. Jan was proud to be the longest serving woman to ever serve in the Kansas legislature. She served as a commissioner for the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and on the Kansas Sentencing Commission. Jan attended First Church of the Nazarene.

While in college, Jan and her brother, Duncan, organized a Christian rock band called the ‘Concrete Rubber Band’ and performed at various Christian functions and churches. They composed and performed original music for several tapes and a record.

On September 30, 1990, she married Ronald Pauls in Hutchinson. They shared almost 27 years of marriage. He survives.

Other survivors include: parents, Paul F. and Lois Duncan Long of Alden; sisters-in-law, Maggie Long of Manhattan, Deanna Speer (Steve) of Wichita, Debbie Barry (Tim) of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; brothers-in-law, John Pauls (Eleanor) of Andover, Roger Pauls (Denice) of Owasso, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Duncan Long, who died in December 2016.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson. A private burial will be held at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, all at Elliott Mortuary. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Barbara N. Elliott, 90, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, July 2, 2017, at Brookdale of Hutchinson. She was born June 16, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Carl Grant and Florence Lucetta (Mead) Iles.

Barbara graduated from Iola High School in 1945 and attended Chillicothe Business College. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. Barbara enjoyed cross stitching, gardening, lake life and playing cards.

On February 14, 1948, she married Thomas A. Elliott Jr. in Olathe. He died September 22, 1997.
Survivors include: daughter, Cyndi Krafels and husband Rick of Hutchinson; sons, Blair and wife Lori of Overland Park, Doug and wife Lori of Hutchinson, Joe and wife Vicki of Macon, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Centralia Cemetery, Centralia, Kansas, with Elder Joseph Elliott officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. The casket will remain closed.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Patricia (Pat) Rose Landwehr Adelhardt, 83, of Partridge, died July 1, 2017, in Hutchinson. She was born on November 3, 1933, in rural Sharon to Herbert and Monica (Boor) Landwehr.

She married Ronald Adelhardt on Aug. 20, 1960, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sharon. He survives.
Pat was a graduate of St. Boniface Catholic School, a 1953 graduate of Sharon High School and a 1954 graduate of the Wichita American Business College. She worked as an administrative assistant for the National Gypsum Company in Medicine Lodge until 1960 and was a resident of Partridge for 57 years.

Pat was a homemaker. She loved ‘growing’ children, baking sweets, preserving garden produce, and giving to others. Pat loved being a Kansas girl, especially being shaped by the red hills of Barber County. Mostly, she loved God, her faith, and her family.

Other survivors include: daughters, Cindy Hertel (Joe) of Ellis, and Ronna Schultz (Doug) of Grainfield; son, Danny Adelhardt (Debi) of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Jackie Adelhardt of Nickerson; grandchildren, Sara Britton, Katie, Larry, John, Abby, Joseph, and Laurissa Adelhardt, Seri and Drew Hertel, Cas, Ty, and Tyra Schultz, and Reed Adelhardt; great-grandchildren, Cody and Jayci Ringwald, Kellyn and Kellyndra Britton, and Savannah Adelhardt; sisters, Teresa Smith (Richard) of Walnut Grove, Mo., Marcella Hansard of Wichita; brother, Herbert Landwehr (Vonda) of Sharon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Larry Adelhardt; granddaughter, Rachel Adelhardt; grandson, Dal Schultz; sisters, Monica Ricke Hendricks, Cecelia Landwehr, Agatha Shogrin, Rose Leis and Louise Martin; and seven grandchildren named by God.

Parish rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, officiated by Deacon Matt Davied. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson, with Father Ned J. Blick officiating. Burial will follow in Partridge Cemetery, Partridge. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017, at Elliott Mortuary. Prior to the rosary, the family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at the church.
