HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mike’s Rent-to-Own, based in Hutchinson, is adding a store in Wichita. The new store will be located at 8542 W. Central.
The store opens Nov. 1. It will be open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There are also Mike’s locations in Lyons, Salina, McPherson, Newton, Pratt, El Dorado and Concordia.
The stores offer furniture, appliances, electronics and more.
ARLINGTON, Kan. — More bridge work is coming. Reno County Public Works announced Monday that Silver Lake Road between Sterling and Peace roads will be closed this Wednesday and Thursday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
Workers will be completing bridge work in the area.
As always, this schedule is subject to change.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man who was once the police chief in Bushton in Rice County wanted a felony charge in Reno County dismissed, but that request was denied.
During a hearing last week, the attorney for Brian Treaster argued that he was not aware of the protection from stalking order when the state alleges he stalked his ex-wife.
He is charged with the felony stalking as well as misdemeanor counts of violation of a protection from stalking order, two counts of harassment by telephone and two counts of disorderly conduct. The alleged crimes occurred on three dates: Feb. 27, April 11 and April 18 of this year.
During a divorce hearing, both sides agreed to a restraining order for no contact, according to the state, but the defense countered that this restraining order was never brought up at the preliminary hearing.
Reno County District Judge Trish Rose took the issue under advisement last week, but denied the defense request. The jury trial will go as scheduled on Nov. 5.
NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office is seeking books for its detention center.
If anyone has books they no longer want, the sheriff’s office says it would gladly take them for use in the jail. Donations like this can help the jail expand its library catalog offerings for those in custody. Those books can provide an educational outlet for inmates.
The jail can only accept paperback copies of books. If you have some books you would be willing to add to the collection, please take them to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office in Newton.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County District Court is closed today in observance of Columbus Day. Business with the court will have to wait until Tuesday.
That includes paying fines in criminal cases or traffic tickets given out by the Reno County Sheriff’s Office or the Kansas Highway Patrol.
There will be no hearings today, including first appearances for those arrested over the weekend. Those individuals will make their first appearance in court Tuesday.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local man who faces serious charges in a domestic case on Sept. 5 managed to get his bond lowered after arguments from both sides Friday.
Charles Parker Jr. faces potential charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated domestic battery, theft and endangering a child.
Magistrate Judge Daniel Gilligan agreed to lower the $117,000 bond to $25,000, noting that Parker has a job and ties to the community. However, the judge denied a defense request for a signature bond.
The victim alleges she was repeatedly strangled. She says Parker threatened to kill her numerous times and put a gun to her head and ribs. He is also accused of striking her with the butt of the gun.
The defendant denies the allegations and claims he wasn’t even present when this allegedly occurred.
He is scheduled to be back in court later this month.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury trial scheduled to begin next week for a South Hutchinson man facing three charges associated with sexual abuse of children has been continued at the request of the defense.
Shawn Rosenberg is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one of which falls under Jessica’s Law, meaning he could receive a life sentence on that count alone if convicted. The state made a plea offer that would have lowered the time in prison if convicted, but the defendant turned it down.
He’s alleged to have sexually abused two girls — a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old.
Rosenberg is free on bond. Judge Tim Chambers set a new motion deadline of Nov. 8. No new trial date was set.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It will be Nov. 1 before we know the sentence of a Hutchinson man convicted of aggravated criminal sodomy.
The attorney for Nathan Crum asked for the continuance so some type of evaluation can be done at a facility in Wichita before sentencing.
Crum was found guilty of sexually assaulting a local woman while they watched a movie at his home. Crum admitted they had sex, but claims it was consensual. The sodomy incident occurred Aug. 17, 2018.
The state also charged him with one count of rape, but the jury found Crum not guilty of that count.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday night, the Reno County Republican Party had to make a choice between two current members of the Reno County Sheriff’s Office to fill the position as sheriff. The two choices, were Captain Darrian Campbell who currently heads the patrol division and Captain Steve Lutz who heads the detective division.
By a close vote of 23-18, Captain Darrian Campbell was selected by the Republicans and his name will be sent to the Governor to complete the process.
The current sheriff Randy Henderson will retire and Campbell will then be the new sheriff on Dec. 28.
