HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 32-year-old Wichita man who was listed as an absconder from parole at the time of his arrest in 2017 is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday where he may enter a plea.

The arrest came as Daniel M. Balderes was traveling on U.S. 50. Once stopped, law enforcement officials discovered he had warrants from the Kansas Department of Corrections and Shawnee County.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of marijuana, scales, baggies and $190 in cash.

Charges include distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Balderes served time for a drug distribution case from 2012, but has other convictions from 2003 and 2006, all in Sedgwick County.

The hearing Wednesday is scheduled in front of Reno County District Judge Joe McCarville.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In an email to staff and others, Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson announced Wednesday his plans to retire on Dec. 27.

“After over 43 years in law enforcement, I feel it is time for me to give more time to my family,” Sheriff Henderson wrote. “I have had a blessed career, being mentored by some outstanding officers. I have been fortunate to have the greatest staff around me, that have supported me and made my life and job pretty easy.”

He also talked about his blood family that has stood behind him and supported him in good times and bad. “It is now time for me to give back to them,” Henderson said. “My 98-year-old mother needs more of my time, I have much work to do around our house, make momma happy, and I never want to miss my grandkids sporting or school events again.” He says that makes him happy.

He says he shouldn’t need to work, but no doubt will work part time or volunteer in the near future. He says he will continue being part of the Drug Task Force and wants to see it through to get a detox and treatment facility in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission tabled the resolution over a conditional use permit for Dale Lehman for a manufacturing facility and retail sales facility on property he owns near K-96 west of Yoder.

Commissioner Ron Sellers says he noticed retail items closer to the highway than what he thought was approved. No one for the planning department was present to discuss which parcel of land was actually approved, so the resolution — a part of the consent agenda — will be taken up next week.

The commission approved the conditional use permit, but now has to approve a resolution to make it official.

The commission also changed some wording in the profile of what the new county administrator would be responsible for and what the priorities would be for that position. The commission listed a starting salary of $120,000. Officials say that is average for similar-sized counties in the state. However, that amount would be subject to negotiations.

The wording needed to be approved so that Austin Peters Group can get the information out to get candidates quickly. The county wants to have someone hired by the end of the year to replace the current administrator Gary Meagher. He will be retiring at the end of his contract at the end of the year.

RICE COUNTY — Two people died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident. The vehicles collided around 2:30 p.m. Friday in Rice County.

According to the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at the intersection of Avenue V and 22nd Road, about five miles north of Nickerson. Three patients were treated, one with critical injuries and two patients with non-life-threatening injuries and all were transported to local hospitals.

A fourth patient, the driver of the northbound vehicle, 84-year-old Dale Hoover, died from his injuries on the scene. Both vehicles came to rest in the northeast ditch.

The passenger of the northbound vehicle, 80-year-old Delores Hoover, succumbed to her injuries later.

The case is still under investigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 510 E. 1st for a structure fire around 12:40 yesterday afternoon.

Arriving units reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure following the initial investigation.

The fire was quickly extinguished by fire personnel and contained to the room of origin.

The occupants were home and made the fire report. No injuries were noted. The fire remains under investigation.
