HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 25-year-old man was jailed after a reported domestic case around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Braden White is jailed for potential charges of aggravated battery, domestic battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal restraint, interference with law enforcement, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Police were called twice to a residence in the 300 block of East 1st. White left the scene before officers arrived the first time. The victim alleges being choked, and being threatened with a curtain rod and hammer.
White came back to the residence just after midnight Monday. Police arrived the second time and he refused to open the door. Officers eventually made their way in and placed White under arrest. Authorities obtained a search warrant for the residence and found the drugs and paraphernalia.
White is jailed on a $48,000 bond. Unless he makes bond, he should make a first appearance in court Tuesday morning.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Stuff the Trucks event for the Reno County Food Bank set a record Saturday thanks to the generosity of those who donated at Walmart in Hutchinson.
The event collected a record 7,339 pounds of food. Another $717.52 in cash and gift cards was also collected.
All of the proceeds from the event went to the Reno County Food Bank to help the less fortunate through the holidays.
Midwest Ford and Toyota Superstore set up vehicles at each entrance and provided volunteers to help collect food.
Fastlane Express Car Wash donated 50% of its proceeds from Saturday as well.
Other sponsors included J&J Drainage Products, Prairie Star Health Center, A&A Appliance, Pools Plus, Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q and Mike’s Rent-to-Own.

Both stations are affiliated with Hutch Post and set up live broadcasts from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Volunteers stayed at both entrances collecting donations until 3 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Around 5:20 p.m. Saturday, officers with the Hutchinson Police Department were dispatched to 17th and Ring Road reference to a shooting. Officers contacted Darin Rodriguez, 54, of Hutchinson who had a gunshot wound to his groin.

The investigation revealed that an argument took place between Rodriguez and the occupants of another car while they were both stopped in traffic on Ring Road just south of 17th Avenue. Rodriguez exited the passenger side on a vehicle he was riding in. He left his door open as he confronted the occupants of the other vehicle. A rear seat passenger in the other vehicle identified as Deante Jones, 20, of Kansas City, discharged a firearm one time striking Rodriguez in the groin.
The bullet went through the open door of the vehicle Rodriguez got out of, ricocheted off the interior and struck the driver, Paula Thomas, 74, of Hutchinson on her upper right leg. Thomas received a graze from the bullet. Rodriguez and Thomas were both transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released.
Jones was arrested for two counts of aggravated battery and is being held on a $20,000 bond. This case is still under investigation.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — November is National Diabetes month. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 10 Americans have this disease, that’s more than 30 million people. Kansas is even worse, almost 13% of adult Kansans have diabetes. Additionally, more than 35% of adult Kansans have prediabetes.
To raise awareness about diabetes and healthy living, the Reno County Health Department is offering a six-week workshop series for people living with chronic diseases such as heart disease and prediabetes. The workshops teach skills that lead to a healthy life with chronic conditions.
The workshops begin Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Hutch Rec Senior Center at Elmdale Park. Call 663-2811 to register and get additional information.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rotary Club has announced it will be welcoming Maj. Gen. John Admire to speak before the local organization Nov. 18.
Admire was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. His military service with the United States Marines began as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam, where he later became an infantry battalion adviser to the Vietnamese Marine Corps in Vietnam. This was followed by Marine leadership in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Okinawa, Japan and the Persian Gulf.
His career included service as the senior White House military aide for President and Mrs. Carter.
He was later the branch chief for the Operations Directorate at the U.S. European Command Headquarters in Germany and vice director for strategic plans and policy joint staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Following his retirement as a major general, he began a career dedicated to youth education and development, community service and continued service to his country. Afterward, he became president of the Oak Ridge Military Academy in North Carolina.
Gen. Admire is the author of “Darker Than Dark,” a story of the Vietnam War and four young Marines. While the book is fiction, the majority is based on Gen. Admire’s actual battles and personal experiences.
He will be the speaker in front of Hutchinson Rotary Club members on Monday, Nov. 18, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atrium Hotel & Conference Center at 1400 N. Lorraine.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 29-year-old man convicted of inappropriate contact with an 11-year-old girl was denied a non-prison sanction at sentencing Friday morning.
Donovan Hall was sentenced to a little more than five years in prison after entering a guilty plea to aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The contact occurred March 7 and again on July 21, 2018.
Hall’s attorney asked for a departure in the case, trying to get him some sex offender treatment. However, the state was opposed and wanted Hall sent to prison. Hall told the court he needs help and will get treatment in prison, but wanted a chance while on some form of probation.
Reno County District Judge Trish Rose agreed with the state, citing the disparity in age and the fact Hall told the child not to tell anyone.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Four people were arrested on various charges after being in the Stroberg building in the 600 block of North Urban in Hutchinson.
Alex Currie, 22, faces possible charges of burglary, theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jill Harney, 43, is jailed for suspicion of burglary, theft and possession of counterfeit currency. She was also arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in another case. She was denied a bond reduction when appearing before a judge Friday morning.
Brent Baker, 52, is jailed for possible charges of burglary, theft, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia
Finally, Jennifer Travis, 40, was arrested for possible charges of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another Stuff the Trucks food drive for the Food Bank of Reno County is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Walmart in Hutchinson.
The food bank needs restocked to help those who are less fortunate this Thanksgiving.
Items needed include canned meats, canned fruits, cereals, pasta, peanut butter, crackers, juices, mac and cheese, pancake mix and syrup, soups; hamburger, tuna and chicken helpers.
Fastlane Express Car Wash will donate 50% of Saturday’s proceeds to help the cause.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two USD 308 elementary schools will have formal programs for Veterans Day on Monday.
At Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, students will gather before the first bell around 7:50 a.m. Monday for the program. During the event, Boy Scouts will lead the school in the flag salute and discuss “What is a Veteran.” Students will read thank-you letters to veterans followed by a song by the third graders.
Following the assembly, there will be a cookie reception for veterans in classrooms.
At Wiley Elementary School, the program will be at 1:45 p.m. Monday. The program will be performed by the school’s first and second graders and will honor all veterans.
Any veteran who would like to attend Wiley’s program is asked to call 620-615-5250 to reserve a seat.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department held the swearing-in of two new members to the department Thursday morning. Before the actual swearing-in, Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper talked about the core values of the department.

“Our mission statement is foster trusting relationships while using advanced law enforcement strategies to build a safer community,” Chief Hooper said. “That kind of encompasses what we’re all about in our community engagement because that’s why we’re here, because of that community connection.”
The two new employees are Communications Center manager Jessica Lynch and police officer Taylor Grace.
After taking the oath, Grace had his badge pinned on him by his wife. Grace talked about his desire to become an officer.
“I’ve always been kind of safety oriented, wanted to help the community, make a difference and move forward with my life in a meaningful manner,” Grace said. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about this department, a lot of my family and friends have said good things about this department. So, I was eager to join this family and everyone has been very friendly to me since I started and applied. I couldn’t be happier to join this family.”

He will be heading to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center next week to begin his training.
The new Communications Center manager, Jessica Lynch, explained what her duties will be with the 911 center.
“I will be the communications manager for the 911 center, so I will be their second-in-command under Michelle Abbott,” Lynch said. “I get to help develop their people and just kind of see where their interests are in 911 and help bring the center up to standards.”
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the Hutchinson Police Department auditorium in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center.
