HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new Daylight Donuts location on 30th is about to open in Hutchinson. The new business is owned by a former Hutchinson radio personality and his wife.

As a longtime Hutchinson morning show radio personality for Country 102.9, Jason Younger always loved to put a smile on people’s faces in the morning and help them start their day off on the right foot.

His wife, Victoria, has worked in Dillons Bakery for 19 years. She loves making doughnuts and baking delicious goodies for great customers.

The Youngers are excited to be working together in Hutchinson’s only locally-owned and family-run doughnut shop. The new Daylight Donuts will be located at 1435 E. 30th in the Wheat State Shopping Center. The doughnut shop will feature favorites and classics made from scratch daily. The Youngers’ kids, Jacob and Gracie, will help in the business along with support from their oldest son, Cole, and daughter-in-law Laura.

They plan to be open by June 21.

Final preparations are being made on what is expected to be a great spot for doughnuts along East 30th.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — City officials in Pretty Prairie say they will shut off the water supply to the entire city Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

They say the shutoff is necessary maintenance on the new water treatment facility.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mosquito season has begun and the recent rain has created more breeding grounds. Mosquitoes can spread diseases like West Nile virus and Zika to humans and heartworm to pets.

The Reno County Health Department began working with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Biological Survey to trap and monitor the mosquito population across the county from May through October.

Mosquitoes known to transmit West Nile virus and Zika virus were trapped.

To protect yourself, remember the three D’s: drain, dress and DEET.

That means eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed, cover your skin with clothing when you are outside — especially at dawn and dusk — and use insect repellent that contains DEET.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Public Works has announced that 56th Avenue from Wilson Road to Yaggy Road will be closed Wednesday and Thursday to all through traffic for a crossroad pipe replacement.

Residents who use that street will need to find an alternate route.

Officials say the schedule is subject to change without any further notice.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council Tuesday approved an exclusive agreement with a development firm for a new hotel and convention center.

Leisure Development Group wanted the exclusive agreement with the city to develop the project over the next six months after a study was completed to address the need and feasibility of such a facility.

The council seemed to indicate it wanted some cost for the project, possibly some site plans and maybe four locations at the end of the six month period. City Manager John Deardoff says that’s probably not realistic.

“That’s a lot of architect engineering work that I don’t believe this company is going to do,” Deardoff said. “They’re making their decision on what hotel is going to work, that’s been very loud and clear.”

He adds that money generated from any development won’t come from the convention center itself but from rooms in the hotel.

At this point, there would be no cost or obligation on the part of the city, but depending what occurs in the next six months, they could then develop a more extensive agreement with the Leisure group.

Funding from the city would be limited. Deardoff noted there is a bed tax that is in effect. Beyond that, they could be looking at property tax. Any decision on financing is a long way off.

The study released Friday showed a need for a 120-bed hotel with at least 20,000 square feet of convention space.

A location still needs to be selected. The most likely spot would be along the K-61 corridor.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission Tuesday approved the bonds for the renovation of the Reno/Harvey County Joint Fire District 2 building in Buhler.

The renovation was completed last summer for an estimated cost of $318,685. The fire district used $100,000 from its equipment fund as upfront money, meaning the county now has to issue bonds for the rest. The bonds will be financed with bonds over a 15-year period.

The funding will go through Commerce Bank with an interest rate of 3.32%. County Administrator Gary Meagher says it would come to about a one mill increase for those who live in that district.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A 57-year-old woman reports losing control of her vehicle and rolling it in the 5200 block of South K-96 highway Monday evening.

Martie Black of Haven was found laying on the ground next to the vehicle and was being tended to by medical personnel. Witnesses were located on the scene as they had not only seen the accident but came back to assist.

It was determined that Black was northbound when she exited the left side of the roadway and entered into the center grass median. Black then attempted to steer back onto the road but overcorrected. This caused her to cross the center line, exit the right side of the roadway, strike a metal gate and a tree. Striking the tree caused the vehicle to roll onto its passenger side. This is where the vehicle stopped.

The accident which occurred just after 7 p.m. is still under investigation.

And earlier in the day Monday, a vehicle being operated by 23-year-old Jessica Hemken of Hutchinson failed to yield the right of way to a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Erienne Dickinson of Wellington. This occurred at the intersection of Ave D and Main St, in South Hutchinson.

Dickinson and eight other occupants in the vehicle were not injured, however, Hemken was transported to Hutch Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

This accident occurring around 12:35 p.m.

Earlier Monday, a vehicle operated by 23-year-old Jessica Hemken of Hutchinson failed to yield the right-of-way to a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Erienne Dickinson of Wellington. This occurred at the intersection of Avenue D and Main Street in South Hutchinson.

Dickinson and eight other occupants in the vehicle were not injured, however, Hemken was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

This accident occurred around 12:35 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Multiple candidates will be vying for a win in the primary in two of the Hutchinson City Council districts.

In the northeast district of Hutchinson, Jade Piros De Carvalho will have two opponents: Lovella Kelly and Joshua Naiman. All three will move onto the general election.

In the southeast district, Steve Dechant will have three challengers: Steven Garza, Arthur Anderson IV and Charles Johnston.

For the at-large seat held by Dave Inskeep, there are three challengers: Sara, Bagwell, Ceeley Williams and Nicholas Lam.

The primary for city elections is Aug. 6. The primary will knock each race down to two candidates. Those winners will then face off against each other in the general election on Nov. 5.
