HUTCHINSON – Hutchinson Police said the body of a 42-year-old man was found near train tracks in Hutchinson at approximately 8:45 a.m. Saturday.
The body of Charles McCanles was found along the railroad tracks near 17th and Halstead. He had been reported missing from Hutchinson Regional Medical Center on March 26.
The cause of death is unknown, but police said there is no evidence of foul play.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 36-year-old Wichita man who entered a plea to flee and elude will serve a year and two months in prison.
Authorities had been looking for William Scott for some time because of outstanding warrants. Officers spotted him and attempted to pull him over. Scott refused to stop his vehicle and led officers on a high-speed chase.
Scott eventually crashed into a police officer at 9th and Lorraine. The officer, identified as Mike Rivers, went to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for an X-ray of his foot.
Although other charges were initially filed, Scott entered a plea to the felony flee and elude charge only and was sentenced to 14 months by District Judge Trish Rose.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another Reno County resident was caught in a scam this week. A 32-year-old woman reported to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office that she was scammed out of $2,000 when she was told she won a Facebook lottery.
As is often the case, the scam artist convinced her that she needed to send money to cover taxes and fees.
Officials are asking residents to remember a legitimate contest will never ask for money up front.
STERLING, Mass. — Officials with the Sterling Police Department are beginning to wonder if word has spread in the owl community about the station’s free food and warm rooms.
Wednesday night, the department received another call about an injured owl. In a Facebook post, the department said officers are becoming well versed in dealing with these creatures of the night.
Once again, officers say their volunteer will be transporting the bird — “Bonzai” — to get treatment.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Marion Counties in central Kansas until 10:15 AM CDT.
A severe thunderstorm was located near Peabody, moving northeast at 35 mph.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Scam artists are still trying to get your personal information and money.
One scam that has been around for awhile is still being used. The scammer calls and claims to be with a utility company and demands the customer pay their bill or their utility will be cut off. The scammer often wants the payment made with gift cards. Utility companies will never ask for gift card payments.
Police in Haven say one of their residents received such a call, but residents in that community receive power from the city of Haven and don’t ask for payment with gift cards.
If you receive a call like this, hang up and contact the utility company to check the status of your account. Never give any personal information over the phone.
HUTCHINSON – A local woman was arrested late Tuesday night after she allegedly attempted to flee Hutchinson Police after a traffic stop in the 500 block of East Avenue A.
Renee Dawn Mule was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, flee and elude, driving while suspended, interference with a law enforcement official, and no proof of insurance.
The chase started around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, ending in the 2400 block of Carey Boulevard.
Mule is free on bond.
TOPEKA — The Kansas Cold Weather Rule ends Sunday, meaning Kansans who are behind on electric and natural gas utility bills will be subject to disconnection of service unless they contact their utility company to make payment arrangements.
The Cold Weather Rule is in effect from Nov. 1 through March 31 each year. It provides protection from disconnection to residential customers in extreme cold.
The Cold Weather Rule requires utilities to set up 12-month payment plans for customers who cannot afford to pay their full bill. As part of this arrangement, the customer must make an initial payment of 1/12 of the overdue amount, 1/12 of the bill for current service, the full amount of any disconnection or reconnection fees, plus any applicable deposit owed to the utility. The balance is billed in equal payments over the next 11 months in addition to the regular monthly bill.
The KCC adopted the Cold Weather Rule in 1983 to protect customers during cold winter weather by providing a reasonable and organized method of paying past due and current bills.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Catholic priest at a South Hutchinson church is being investigated for possible financial issues, according to Reno County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Lutz.
“He has not been arrested. All I can confirm is that we are working a financial crime at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in South Hutchinson,” Lutz said in a text message to Hutch Post.
Officials are still investigating whether the priest, Juan Garza, committed any crime. The Catholic Diocese of Wichita is the victim in this case.
Lutz wouldn’t say if the priest will be arrested at some point. “It has not been sent to the D.A.’s office yet,” Lutz said.
Attempts to get a comment from the Diocese of Wichita were unsuccessful.
