HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 60-year-old Hutchinson man was taken to the hospital during the noon hour Friday after being struck by a vehicle while walking near 2nd and Adams.
The accident occurred when 80-year-old Bobbie Adams of Goodman, Missouri, struck Richard Perrell. Perrell was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Adams was cited by police for having no license plate, driving with no insurance and inattentive driving. He was not injured.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Blanchard and Poplar in South Hutchinson Friday morning for an injury accident. They found two vehicles with heavy damage.
One of the vehicles was driven by 25-year-old Josephine Marlow. The other was a pickup driven by 56-year-old Jeff Morris.
Marlow was westbound on Blanchard, failed to yield at the stop sign, proceeded into the intersection and struck Morris with her vehicle.
She was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center by EMS with non-life threatening injuries. Morris was released from the scene and taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment by his wife.
The accident occurred around 9 a.m. Friday.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old Hutchinson man waived his preliminary hearing and entered a plea to one of six charges.
Tyler Humphries led Reno County sheriff’s deputies on a brief high-speed chase back in October in a stolen vehicle.
He entered a plea to one count of felony flee and elude. The other charges were dropped.
Sheriff’s deputies were looking for the stolen vehicle at a mobile home park in Yoder when Humphries fled east toward Haven. He then turned north to the intersection of Haven Road and Illinois where he got out of the vehicle and waited for deputies to arrive. He then surrendered.
Humphries is serving a sentence for three counts of theft from 2017 and will be sentenced on March 29.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 23-year-old man arrested after a domestic disturbance on Feb. 16 was before a judge Friday for the reading of formal charges.
Mark Spress is charged with aggravated battery – domestic violence after he allegedly choked the victim and impeded her breathing.
Police arrived at the home and, while placing him under arrest, also found methamphetamine and personal use drug paraphernalia.
Spress has been on community corrections for possession of drugs and theft. He faces a community corrections violation in that case.
His bond was set at $8,000.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Most people strive to retire by 65. People across the country also try to pay for their children’s college education. These are two basic savings goals for Americans.
However, the dollar amount needed to accomplish these goals varies depending on location.
The financial technology company SmartAsset crunched the numbers to find the places where it costs the least to meet these goals. According to the study, Hutchinson ranked No. 16 out of 223 cities included in the study.
The study found that Hutchinson residents must save $515 every month to accomplish these goals. Put another way, on average, Hutchsonians will need to save about 9.41 percent of their income to retire on time and send two kids to college.
One city in Kansas was actually listed in the top 10: Salina. Salinians need to save $485 per month to reach those goals.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 37-year-old ex-con has been formally charged after an incident at a local motel.
Martin Alan Andes remains jailed for aggravated kidnapping, criminal threat, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Hutchinson police officers were called to the Sunflower Inn on Feb. 12 for the report of an armed subject. Two employees at the motel told police they were threatened by Andes and that he put them in fear for their safety.
He also allegedly forced his girlfriend into a car at gunpoint and threatened to kill her and their 8-month-old child. He is accused of putting the gun to her head while making the threats.
During the incident, Andes also fired the gun in the air a couple of times.
His bond remains at $242,500. He will be back in court on March 20.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Projects in four counties, including Reno County, will receive funding to improve safety on rural roads as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s High-Risk Rural Roads program.
Officials say projects in this program fall into one of two categories — systemic or site specific. Projects in the systemic category are 100 percent federally funded and aren’t required to provide a match. Site specific projects are 90 percent federally funded and a county contributes up to 10 percent of the project cost.
Reno County and three other counties fall under the systemic category. Reno County will receive $378,000 for upgraded signing of all major and minor collectors east of K-14.
Pratt County ($181,000), Rice County ($252,000) and Stafford County ($284,000) will receive funding for similar work.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Five people were arrested after a chase with Hutchinson police just before 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
Lance Moody, 17, was taken into custody and faces possible charges of felony flee and elude, interference with law enforcement, and leaving the scene of an accident after the vehicle he was operating struck a parked vehicle in the 400 block of North Adams while he was being chased by law enforcement.
Four passengers in the vehicle — 23-year-old Zach Mountain, 21-year-old Richard Marshall, 19-year-old Nikkita Obrist and 21-year-old Clinton Smith — were all arrested for interference with law enforcement when they fled the vehicle after the crash.
They are free on bond.
TOPEKA, Kan. — Two Reno County organizations have been awarded grants to support public health and safety programs.
The Hutchinson Police Department will receive $15,765 to purchase equipment and supplies to implement trauma-based first aid care training for life-threatening injuries.
Reno County Community Corrections will receive $113,938 to support mental health services in Reno County.
The grants are part of the Federal Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program and were awarded by the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
