HUTCHINSON, Kan. – It has become the talk of the town. Talk20 Hutch is an open forum for the exchange of ideas. It brings people together in the community to learn, listen, and engage with one another over a number of topics.
All are welcome to join the 11th Talk20 Hutch where 10 Reno County community members will present 20 images each and speak for 20 seconds per image about 10 wildly different topics.
The event will be Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hutchinson Public Library at 9th and Main.
CHARLOTTE, NC — CBS Sports Network and the NJCAA have announced a yearlong agreement that will feature the NJCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball National Championship games and the NJCAA Football National Championship game in 2019. The agreement makes CBS Sports Network the national television partner of the association.
CBS Sports Network will air the basketball national championship games on March 23 with the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship game at 12:00 p.m. ET and the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship game at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Football National Championship is slated for Dec. 5, 2019, on CBS Sports Network with a 6:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Since 1949, the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament has been held at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The 24-team single elimination tournament is also scheduled to begin on March 18, and is hosted by the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 and Visit Hutch. The men’s basketball tournament was awarded the 2018 SportsTravel Award for the Best Single-Sport Event in the Collegiate division at the annual national TEAMS Conference. They ended up winning over other nominated events such as the Big Ten Football Championship in Indianapolis and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.
After becoming the first nationally televised NJCAA championship game on CBS Sports Network in 2018, the NJCAA Football National Championship game will return to the channel in 2019. The 2018 game featured #1 East Mississippi and #2 Garden City (KS) in a defensive slugfest, with the Lions defeating Garden City 10-9. The 2019 championship game will be the second of a three-year agreement with the Crawford County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and will be played at Carnie Smith Stadium on the campus of Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, KS.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With all the reports of counterfeit money being passed around, Hutchinson Police did make an arrest for that crime.
Joshua Downey, 34, was taken to jail for two counts of counterfeiting money, theft by deception as well as drug charges.
According to police, he purchased a computer and monitor using a fake $100.00 bill on Jan. 12. In another incident, he purchased an iPhone using fake 20’s. That crime occurred on Jan. 18.
When police arrested him, he was also in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — When the annual Eastern Kansas Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition opens Feb. 1, Hutchinson High School will be well represented.

There will be a total of 14 HHS works in the exhibition. Of those 14, eight received Gold Key finishes in competition. In all, jurors picked 152 pieces as Gold Key winners.
The regional Gold Key works are submitted for the national judging process. Any artists with pieces selected as Gold Key at nationals will have their artwork displayed in New York City for the summer show.
An additional six Silver Key winners are from Salthawk artists and will be featured in the Mark Arts exhibit as well. The exhibition is Feb. 1 through March 23 at Mark Arts in Wichita. Altogether, there were 166 Silver Key winners in the show.
There are also 13 pieces from HHS that were listed as honorable mention. In total, there were 309 honorable mention pieces selected by the jurors.
Overall, there were 2,400 entries for the Eastern Kansas Scholastics competition.
There will be an exhibition opening for award recipients and their families from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 1 at Mark Arts and an open house/awards ceremony on March 23. The open house is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on March 23 with the Gold Key and Cash Awards ceremony set for 3 p.m. Mark Arts is located at 1307 N. Rock Road in Wichita.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – For what has become a common occurrence in recent domestic battery cases, a 48-year-old Hutchinson man was jailed for aggravated battery after choking the victim. According to police reports, Charles Scott choked the victim during an altercation Tuesday evening.
When police arrived, they witnessed the marks on her neck from where Scott was choking her. As Scott was choking her, he apparently told her, “you are going to die today.”
The victim was able to get away and called the police. This occurred around 6:20 p.m.
Scott is jailed on a bond of $10,000 and his request for a reduction was denied by Judge Joe McCarville.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With blood always being needed, especially this time of year, officials at Hutchinson Community College have announced that the Student Government Association is hosting a blood drive this Friday in partnership with the American Red Cross.
The drive will be held in the lower level of Parker Student Union from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Those interested in donating blood can schedule an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org using the sponsor code “HutchCC”.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At the beginning of the Reno County Commission meeting, County Counselor Joe O’Sullivan urged the commission to stop hearing comments on the proposed NextEra Energy wind farm.
The issue is no longer in their hands since the proposed moratorium was rejected.
O’Sullivan believes that hearing comments could influence them to take a position without all the facts when the item isn’t even officially before them at this point:
NextEra has yet to file an application for the project, but indicated earlier that it plans to file an application for the special use permit no later than Feb. 15.
O’Sullivan says all comments, any written or typed notes, should be sent to the planning commission. He talked about not hearing any more public comments:
After hearing from O’Sullivan, the commission voted to not hear any more comments on the issue until it goes through the proper legal process. That means it would go through the planning commission before it would come back to commissioners.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission approved all of the items on its agenda Tuesday.
Bob Bush was named the commission chair. Ron Hirst was selected as his vice chair. As the newest commissioner on the board, Ron Sellers said he didn’t feel ready to take a leadership role at this point.
The commission also granted permission to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office to purchase a new 2019 Ford F-150 truck for $27,800 from Midwest Superstore in Hutchinson. They were also given permission to purchase two used vehicles for a total not to exceed $39,000.
On a 2-1 vote, commissioners also agreed to an increase in the mileage reimbursement rate from 54.5 cents per mile to 58 cents per mile as per the 2019 IRS Standard Mileage. Commissioner Ron Hirst voted against it. Hirst is concerned county employees won’t use pool vehicles so they can get the mileage reimbursement.
Commissioners also renewed the contracts with SCS Engineers for 2019 solid waste consulting services for $88,300 and the Air Quality & Gas Collection and Control System annual consultation services for $94,300.
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual winter financial aid for college meeting is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle.
Hutchinson High School seniors and their parents or guardians are invited to the informational meeting. Topics will include federal financial aid, the free application for Federal Student Aid, local scholarships and Hutchinson Community College endowment scholarships.
During the event, there will be a drawing for a book scholarship at HutchCC for 2019-20.
