HAYS, Kan. – 20-5 second quarter blew open a three point ball game as #7 Fort Hays State moved to 3-0 on the young season.  The Tigers jumped out a seven point lead twice in the first quarter but could not build on the advantage.  Adams State cut the Tiger lead down to three by the end of the quarter at 13-10 and started the second quarter with the ball but failed to score.

The Tigers launched into a 12-0 run that three different players scored during.  That stretch pushed the Fort Hays State advantage to 25-10 over Adams State.  The Grizzlies would never get closer than 12 points rest of the night.  The Tigers led by 18 at halftime 33-15.  That gap would never get closer than 16 in the second half winning 79-39.

Highlights

Fort Hays State held Adams State to single digits in the second and third quarter.  The Tigers outscored the Grizzlies 20-5 and 23-6 in those two quarters.  Lanie Page led the way in scoring for the home team at 11 points.  Belle Barbieri added her second double-double of the season at ten points and ten rebounds.  Each one of the 13 players suited up for the Tigers scored during the forty point victory.  Adams State was led by Zakiya Beckles who came off the bench to score a game high 16.

The Tiger bench came through with a season high 42 points, no player was on the floor for more than 21 minutes and turnovers were cut nearly in have at nine in the game.

Fort Hays State improves to 3-0 on the year.  They will play at home Saturday evening at 5:00 against Cameron University who is 1-2.  The Aggies lost to Nebraska-Kearney 79-73 earlier in the night.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The Big 12 has seen plenty of upsets and close games this season. Parity makes for fierce competition and games that are fun to watch. It also presents a quandary about the league’s chances of making the College Football Playoff.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self knew it was important to fill the majority of his upcoming recruiting class during the early signing period, given the uncertainty that surrounds the Jayhawks when it comes to potential NCAA violations. The school was hit with a series of allegations earlier this year, the majority of them tied to recruiting violations, and Self was personally fingered for supposedly failing to monitor the program.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 10 Oklahoma plays at No. 12 Baylor in a potential Big 12 championship game preview. They are the top two teams in the league. Baylor has an 11-game winning streak and is 9-0 this year. The Sooners are playing on the road for the first time since losing at Kansas State three weeks ago. Oklahoma has won the last four Big 12 titles since Baylor was part of consecutive league championships.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 22 Texas still has an outside chance at the Big 12 title game. But the Longhorns need to win out, starting with Iowa State, and get help from Baylor and Oklahoma. Fourth-year Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is still seeking his first win over Texas.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ four-game winning streak is over after Baker Mayfield threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the Cleveland Browns’ 21-7 victory over their AFC North rival. Mayfield was 17 of 32 passing for 193 yards and no interceptions to help Cleveland win its second straight and improve to 4-6. Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph was intercepted four times and was just 23 of 44 for 221 yards and a TD.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns’ 21-7 win over the Steelers last night was marred by a brawl sparked by Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett with just a few seconds to play. Garrett ripped off Rudolph’s helmet and hit him in the head with it in the final seconds. Garrett faces a likely suspension for his actions, and Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey will likely be disciplined for kicking Garrett in the head.

NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout has become the sixth player to win at least three American League MVP Awards, joining Alex Rodriguez and Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. The 28-year-old Trout had another outstanding season, batting .291 with a career-high 45 home runs, 104 RBIs and 27 doubles while leading the league in on-base percentage, slugging and OPS. Trout got 17 of 30 first-place votes in balloting. Astros infielder Alex Bregman was second with the other 13 first-place votes.

NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Cody Bellinger is the National League MVP for the first time, collecting 19 of 30 first-place votes to outdistance 2018 MVP Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers. Bellinger batted .305 with 47 home runs, 115 RBIs and a 1.035 OPS while helping the Dodgers post the league’s best regular-season record. He’s the 10th different Dodger to win MVP and first since Clayton Kershaw in 2014.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns were seconds away from a season-changing win when Myles Garrett lost his composure in a moment of rage rarely seen on an NFL field.

Garrett tore off Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet, wildly swung it and hit the QB in the head, a shocking act that will likely result in a lengthy suspension for Cleveland’s star defensive end and perhaps cost the Browns any chance of making the playoffs.

Garrett’s outburst came with 8 seconds left in Cleveland’s 21-7 win over the rival Steelers on Thursday night, a game that will not be remembered for anything that happened in the first 59 minutes.

Garrett faces a stiff NFL suspension and Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey will likely be disciplined for kicking Garrett in the head.

“I lost my cool and I regret it,” Garrett said. “It’s going to come back to hurt our team. The guys who jumped into the scrum, I appreciate my team having my back, but it never should have gotten to that point.

“It’s on me.”

Players from both sidelines spilled on the field during the melee, which began after Garrett wrestled Rudolph to the ground well after he completed a short pass on a meaningless play. Garrett, Pouncey and Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi were ejected.

Rudolph got his hand on Garrett’s helmet first as the players grappled on the ground, but Garrett escalated the brawl after he got back on his feet. He yanked the helmet off Rudolph and slammed it into the top of the quarterback’s head.

Rudolph threw his arms in the air in disbelief after the impact, and Pouncey retaliated by punching and kicking Garrett.

“I thought it was pretty cowardly and bush league,” Rudolph said. “I’m not going to back down from any bully. I felt like I had a bone to pick with him. I appreciate the line always having my back, but I was angry.”

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield called Garrett’s actions “inexcusable” and Fox commentator Troy Aikman said they were “barbaric.”

Mayfield said he didn’t speak with Garrett, but he expects his teammate to be accountable.

“This is a physical, violent game and there’s moments if you don’t keep your cool, bad things can happen and he knows that. It’s inexcusable and he knows that,” Mayfield said. “There’s no other way around it, he’s going to own up to it and he’s going to handle it and this locker room is going to have to come together because this is going to be a soap opera on the outside much like the media has portrayed us to be for the whole season.”

The incident overshadowed a win that put Cleveland back in the playoff picture and breathed some life into a season that had been slipping away.

“It feels like we lost,” Mayfield said.

Browns receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was shown replays of the brawl on the NFL Network set.

“It’s ugly,” Beckham said. “It’s not something we want in the NFL.”

Rudolph, a second-year player who took over for the injured Ben Roethlisberger in Week 2, has already missed time this season with a concussion after he was knocked unconscious from a helmet-to-helmet hit by Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin refused to discuss the disturbing end-game situation.

Several Pittsburgh players were eager to give their views on what happened.

“I don’t know how he got to the point that it’s OK to use a helmet as a weapon,” said Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward. “I know we play a sport that’s violent, but it should never have gotten handled like that. That dumb stuff shouldn’t be allowed.

“For someone to use a helmet as a weapon is uncalled for. I know you’ve got to ask me the question, but he’s got to answer for that.”

Before the ugly ending, Mayfield threw two touchdown passes and scored on a 1-yard plunge as Cleveland held on to defeat the banged-up Steelers for just the fourth time in 10 years and improved to 2-0 in the AFC North for the first time.

The Browns (4-6) have won two in a row after dropping four straight, a skid that put coach Freddie Kitchens’ job in jeopardy.

But Mayfield’s 8-yard TD pass to undrafted rookie tight end Stephen Carlson with 5:25 left helped clinch a rare win over the rival Steelers. And a softer upcoming schedule has eased the pressure on Kitchens and given the Browns some hope they can end the NFL’s longest playoff drought.

The loss was especially damaging to the Steelers (5-5).

Pittsburgh lost its top two playmakers as running back James Conner (shoulder) and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion) suffered injuries in the second quarter and didn’t return.

Without them, Rudolph didn’t have enough help and threw four interceptions.

In the third quarter, Steelers rookie wide receiver Diontae Johnson got concussed from a vicious hit by Browns safety Damarious Randall, who was ejected.

Browns running back Nick Chubb had 92 yards and went over 1,000 this season.

Despite the injuries, the Steelers were within 14-7 entering the fourth quarter after Rudolph connected with Jaylen Samuels for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

CALLAWAY RELEASED

The Browns have been wrapped up in drama all season, and that was the case again Thursday as the team released wide receiver Antonio Callaway just hours before kickoff.

Callaway, who served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy earlier this season, was benched by Kitchens for arriving late to Sunday’s game against Buffalo.

KAEPERNICK WORKOUT

The Browns are one of 11 teams committed to attending former quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s workout in Atlanta this weekend.

Owner Dee Haslam said didn’t know who from the team would be at the workout to evaluate Kaepernick, who hasn’t played since 2016 and became a polarizing figure when he kneeled during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice.

“We are in support of anybody getting an opportunity to play football,” Haslam said. “We love that.”

INJURIES

Steelers: Along with the others, Pittsburgh lost LB Olasunkanmi Adeniyi (concussion) and CB Artie Burns (knee).

Browns: Safety Morgan Burnett sustained an Achilles injury in the first half and didn’t return.

WATT’S UP

Steelers LB T.J. Watt took down Mayfield in the third quarter, giving him eight sacks in five career contests against the Browns. Watt has at least one-half sack in seven straight games, the longest active streak in the NFL.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore defensive end Latrell Bankston was named the 2019 Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday as the all-KJCCC teams were announced.

Bankston was one of 10 Blue Dragons to earn first-team honors and one of 23 total Hutchinson players to earn postseason notoriety.

The 2019 Blue Dragons finished the season 9-2 and ranked No. 3 in the final regular-season NJCAA National Rankings. The Blue Dragons play No. 18 Monroe College in the Salt City Bowl on December 7 at Gowans Stadium.

Bankston a 6-foot-1, 299-pound defensive tackle from Woodstock, Georgia, is the second-straight Blue Dragon to win the league’s top defensive honor, joining Monty Montgomery, the 2018 winner. He is the fourth Blue Dragon to win the Defensive Player of the Year in the Rion Rhoades’ era.

The 23 overall selected tied the 2012 and 2018 Blue Dragons for the most all-conference players since Rhoades took over in 2007. The 10 first-team selected were the most in the Rhoades’ era and the most since 1998.

This season, Bankston has been the dominant player on a dominant Blue Dragon defense, which was No. 1 in the KJCCC in scoring defense (14.3 ppg), No. 1 in total defense (215.9 ypg), No. 1 in pass defense (170.5 ypg) and No. 2 in rush defense (86.4 ypg).

Bankston led the Jayhawk Conference and was No. 8 in the NJCAA with 10.5 quarterback sacks and was third in the NJCAA in tackles for loss with 21.5.

He was third on the Blue Dragons this season with 58 total tackles, including 21 solo stops. Bankston also had eight quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Bankston had a season-high 13 total tackles and four quarterback sacks in a narrow loss to Garden City. He had eight tackles and two sacks in a 34-27 win at No. 2 Iowa Western and seven tackles and two sacks in a victory over No. 2 Butler.

Bankston joins nine other Blue Dragons on the 2019 first team:
+ Quarterback Mark Wright (5-10, 186, Douglasville, GA) was a dual-threat for the Dragons this season. His 59.5 percent completion rate ranks fourth-best in single-season history. Wright completed 132 of 222 passes for 1,621 yards, ninth-best in team single-season history with the Salt City Bowl pending. He’s thrown for 17 touchdowns, which ties for sixth in single-season history. Wright was also the Dragons’ leading rusher with 570 yards on 114 carries with seven touchdowns.

+ Receiver Mitchell Tinsley (6’0, 183, Lees Summit, MO) was the Blue Dragons’ leading receiver with 50 receptions for 534 yards and four touchdowns.

+ Offensive tackle Jazston Turnetine (6-6. 338, Ellenwood, GA) led a Blue Dragon offensive line that led the way for the Blue Dragons to average 44.8 points, 403.8 total yards & 233.3 rush yards.

+ Defensive end Kirmari Gainous (6-3, 255, Tallahassee, FL) was the Blue Dragons’ fourth-leading tackler with 46 total tackles, including 16 solo stops. Gainous had 14 tackles for loss that accounted for 61 yards and seven quarterback sacks. Gainous also had two quarterback hurries, one pass broken up, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

+ Linebacker Gereme Spraggins (6-1, 229, Odenton, MD) was Hutchinson’s second-leading tackler with 66 total stops, 32 were solo. Spraggins, who had an exceptional second half of the season, had 11 tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

+ Linebacker Lavar Gardner (5-11, 193, Atlanta, GA) was the Blue Dragons’ leading tackler with 72 total stops, including 31 solo tackles. Gardner had 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sacks, three passes broken up, three quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries.

+ Cornerback Ronald Williams (6-2, 188, Ferriday, LA) had a team-high three interceptions and nine passes broken up to lead a talented defensive secondary. Williams had 22 tackles with one tackles for loss.

+ Safety Jakorian Bennett (5-11, 193, Mobile, AL) was second on the team with 11 passes broken up. He also had two interceptions and 24 total tackles.

+ Return specialist Tiyon Evans (5-9, 225, Hartsville, AL) had not one, but two 95-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns to open a second half this season. Evans ranked ninth in the NJCAA and was second in the KJCCC at 27.2 yards per return on 16 attempts.

Six Blue Dragons earned second-team honors:
+ Fullback Rico Nix (6-5, 247, Sorrento, FL) didn’t have a carry this season, but provided many key blocks to lead a Blue Dragon rushing attack that averaged 233.3 yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry.

+ Receiver Karim Brown (6-1, 173, St. Augustine, FL) missed five games with injury, but still managed to catch 17 balls for 238 yards and four touchdowns.

+ Offensive lineman Dmarious Warren (6-2, 237, Kennett, MO) started all 11 games and helped the Blue Dragons post the third-best scoring offense in Blue Dragon history pending the Salt City Bowl. Hutchinson’s 39 rushing touchdowns are tied for second most in team history.

+ Cornerback Justin Gardner (6-2, 190, Johns Creek, GA) racked up a team-high 14 passes broken up and had one interception this season. Gardner accounted for 23 total tackles.

+ Safety Isaiah Todd (6-1, 208, Decatur, GA) had one of Hutch’s two interception returns for touchdown. He had two picks, three passes broken up, 26 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

+ Return specialist Mitchell Tinsley (6-0, 183, Lees Summit, MO) averaged 15.3 yards per punt on 12 returns with two returns for touchdowns.

Seven other Blue Dragons earned honorable mention honors.

Tight end Stacey Marshall (6-6, 252, Montgomery, AL) was a solo blocker who caught five balls for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Offensive guard Stevie Young (6-4, 315, Fort Smith, AR) and center Conner Lierz (6-2, 300, Manhattan) were the third and fourth members of a strong offensive line that had the Dragons rank either No. 1 or 2 in all KJCCC rankings. Running back Jonathan White (5-10, 198, Quitman, GA) averaged 11.2 yards per carry with three touchdowns on his 13 carries for 145 yards. White also returned two blocked punts for touchdowns this season. Defensive tackle Rodney Matthews (6-2. 278, Bartlett, TN) had 29 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback sacks and four QB hurries. Defensive End Nico Cooper (6-5, 224, Memphis, TN) had 23 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Kicker Sebastian Garcia didn’t have the great year he had last year, but still connected on 45 of 50 extra points and three field goals.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Kansas Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5 Big 12) hit the road for their 10th game of the season and their fourth on the road on Saturday, as the Jayhawks take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma at 11 a.m., on FS1.

Both teams enter Saturday’s matchup following a bye week, in what will be the 70th meeting all-time between the Jayhawks and the Cowboys. Oklahoma State owns the series advantage at 37-29-3, including a 16-14-2 mark in Stillwater. Kansas’ last win over Oklahoma State came on Nov. 10, 2007, when the Jayhawks took down the Cowboys, 43-28, in Stillwater.

The Jayhawks have found success on the road so far this season, averaging 431 total yards of offense in three games away from home. The Jayhawks are 1-3 on the road heading into the weekend, with their first road trip resulting in a 48-24 victory over Boston College on Sept. 13.

The game will be head coach Les Miles’ first appearance back at Boone Pickens Stadium since he was the head coach at Oklahoma State from 2001-05. Miles led the Cowboys to a 28-21 record in his time in Stillwater, leading them to three consecutive bowl games after a 4-7 start in his first season.

Ahead of Saturday’s showdown in Stillwater, head coach Les Miles met with the media on Monday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior college standout guard Tyon Grant-Foster has signed a national letter of intent to play men’s basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Wednesday. He will be a junior for the Jayhawks in 2020-21.

Currently ranked No. 2 nationally among junior college recruits, Grant-Foster (6-foot-7, 190 pounds) enters his sophomore season at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College a preseason junior college All-America selection for 2019-20.

“Tyon is very long and extremely skilled,” Self said. “He can play basically anywhere on the floor, one through four. He’s good with the ball, has great vision and is a terrific athlete. His motor is always running.”

Through four games, the Kansas City, Kan., native is averaging 23.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Included was a 35-point effort against State Fair Community College on Nov. 9. Grant-Foster is shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, including 40.0 percent from 3-point range.

“Playing for a great Indian Hills program will make Tyon’s transition to Kansas seamless,” Self said. “Jerrance (Howard) did a great job recruiting Tyon and his family.”

As a freshman, Grant-Foster averaged 8.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for Indian Hills in 2018-19. Prior to Indian Hills, Grant-Foster played at Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kan.

“One of the things that attracted us most to Tyon is his personality,” Self said. “He has a zest for the game and you could tell his teammates enjoy playing with him. He will have a big impact for us next year. We’re also excited to have his family close by.”
