FOXBORO, New England (AP) – Tom Brady has never known what it’s like to play out the final season of a contract in his 20-year NFL career, and the New England Patriots superstar quarterback isn’t about to find out.

Brady, who turned 42 on Saturday, is signing a two-year, $70 million extension that runs through 2021 and includes a hefty raise this season, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The person, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because the Patriots hadn’t announced the extension, confirmed the NFL Network’s report on Brady’s contract.

Brady will get an $8 million raise in 2019, when he’ll make $23 million. The extension also calls for him to make $30 million in 2020 and $32 million in 2021, when he would be 44.

Brady, who led the Patriots to a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53, is one of just four players to win six NFL titles. The others all played for Vince Lombardi’s mighty Green Bay Packers teams in the 1960s: Hall of Famers Herb Adderley and Forrest Gregg and their teammate, Fuzzy Thurston.

Adderley, 80, told the AP earlier this year that he believes it will take another 100 years for someone else to join the exclusive club, although he figures Brady will make it a moot point with a seventh ring before he decides to retire.

“Oh yes, indeed. He has a shot at it as long as he plays,” Adderley said.

Brady and the Patriots open defense of their latest Super Bowl title against Pittsburgh on Sept. 8. Usually, the champion kicks off the season but that honor goes to Green Bay and Chicago this year as the NFL celebrates its 100th season.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Make it two in a row for Chase Elliott at Watkins Glen International.

A year after racing to his first career NASCAR Cup victory at The Glen, Elliott won a second time in the No. 9 for Hendrick Motorsports, besting Martin Truex Jr. just as he did a year ago. The Glen hadn’t had a repeat winner in nearly a decade, since Marcos Ambrose in 2011-12.

It was a two-car race for more than half the 220.5- mile distance and the entire final 40 laps around the high-speed 2.45-mile natural terrain layout.

Truex began to exert some pressure after sitting behind Elliott for more than 10 laps in the final segment. Elliott held his ground until Truex’s No 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota closed with six laps to go, waiting to pounce on a mistake that never came.

With two laps left, Truex still couldn’t get close enough to make a move as Elliott drove flawlessly, winning by 0.454 seconds.

Elliott, the pole-sitter, led 80 of 90 laps and snapped a long slump.

Denny Hamlin was third, Erik Jones fourth for Gibbs and Ryan Blaney fifth in his No. 22 Penske Racing Ford after starting from the rear of the field.

Seven-time champion Jimmy Johnson finished 19th as he struggles to make the playoffs.

Truex was chasing a sweep of the two traditional road races on the schedule. He won at Sonoma in June for the second straight time and has five straight top-two finishes on road courses.

Elliott won the first two stages, dominating the first, and Truex moved into contention about a third of the way through the race.

Truex began to challenge Elliott for the lead entering the first turn on Lap 55, moving briefly inside on the 90-degree, downhill right-hander but backed off to wait for another shot. They were alone at the front of the field, 12 seconds ahead when Elliott dived to pit road on Lap 60 for his final stop. Truex followed suit the next time around and was back behind Elliott, a bit farther back this time.

Truex stayed back but like last year began to close the gap with 20 laps left. Elliott, who overcame some mistakes in the closing laps a year ago that nearly opened the door for Truex, maintained a steady lead of just a few car-lengths ahead for almost the entire stage, the two 5 seconds ahead of Hamlin in third.

The race was stopped when Johnson, desperate for a good finish, spun out coming out of the carousel turn, a sweeping right-hander, and seconds later Bubba Wallace spun Kyle Busch, who was running 10th on Lap 62. Busch and Wallace had banged each other while racing down the front straightaway before Wallace had the last tap, sending Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota around entering the first turn. Busch, who started third, finished 11th.

Elliott and Truex were back in front for the restart on Lap 66, but Truex challenged right off the green flag, the two exchanging bumps speeding up through the esses as Elliott never relinquished the lead.

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are still sorting out their running back situation with a week to go before their preseason opener, and the job hasn’t gotten any easier with starter Damien Williams sidelined by a hamstring injury. UNDATED (AP) _ Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors have agreed on a four-year extension worth nearly $100 million, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. The person tells The Associated Press that Green and the Warriors intend to make the deal official imminently. The extension means the Warriors will have Green, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson all under contract through 2022 or longer.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have activated outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the injured list and claimed catcher Dustin Garneau off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Piscotty had been out since June 30 with a sprained right knee. He played five games in the minors while rehabbing and batted .304 with one home run and three RBIs. To make room on the roster, the A’s optioned second baseman Franklin Barreto to Triple-A Las Vegas. They also released pitcher Andrew Triggs and designated right-hander Ryan Dull for assignment.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have signed running back Mack Brown, a free agent who spent part of last season on the Washington Redskins’ practice squad. Brown has also played for Minnesota, appearing in 13 games over three seasons. The Raiders also waived guard Lukayus McNeil, who signed with the team this past spring as an undrafted free agent.

MILTON KEYNES, England (AP) — Hinako Shibuno’s dream debut continues as she fired a 5-under 67 to seize a two-shot lead going into the final round at the Women’s British Open. The 20-year-old is a rookie on the Japan LPGA Tour who is making her LPGA Tour and major championship debut. She hit six birdies in the final nine holes of the third round for a 14-under 202.

NEW YORK (AP) _ The Philadelphia Phillies have sued the New York company that created the Phanatic mascot to prevent the green furry fan favorite from becoming a free agent. In a complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan, the team alleged Harrison/Erickson threatened to terminate the Phillies’ rights to the Phanatic next year and “make the Phanatic a free agent” unless the team renegotiates its 1984 agreement to acquire the mascot’s rights.

Five Observations From Saturday’s Chiefs Training Camp Practice

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Cruz is hardly slowing down. If anything, he’s heating up.

The 39-year-old Minnesota slugger extended his recent tear Saturday night, hitting three home runs in a game for the second time in 10 days and powering the AL Central-leading Twins to an 11-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

A day after he homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, Cruz again had five RBIs.

“I think my approach is the right one,” Cruz said. “My body feels good, and I have the right approach.”

Cruz hit a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo drive in the second and a two-run shot in the sixth. He didn’t get a chance at a record-tying fourth home run — he was left on deck when Jorge Polanco grounded out to end the eighth.

Cruz has 11 homers and 23 RBIs in his last nine starts.

“Hopefully I keep finding runners on base,” Cruz said. “I can only drive (in) runs when I find runners on base. We’ve got a great lineup. They all get on base for me.”

Cruz connected for a career-high three homers on July 25 against the White Sox, and matched that mark against the Royals. He has 30 homers this year and 390 for his career, tying Graig Nettles for 62nd place.

Only two other players have had two three-homer games within 10 days. Doug DeCinces did it for the California Angels on Aug. 3 and Aug. 8, 1982, and Johnny Mize did it for the St. Louis Cardinals on July 13 and July 20, 1938.

Cruz is the first Twins player to have multiple three-homer games in the same season. He’s hit at least 30 homers in six consecutive seasons. Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera and Edwin Encarnacion are the only other active players to have accomplished that.

“Well, my vocabulary is not good enough to really do the guy justice,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “If you’re around long enough, you see a lot of impressive things, but what we’re watching right now is something that the likes of it, I haven’t seen anything like it before. I don’t think anybody else has either, but again, are we surprised that we’re seeing it from him? Absolutely not. It’s just what he does. He continues to go out there and produce at levels that nobody else does.”

Polanco and C.J. Cron also homered for the Twins, who lead Cleveland by three games.

Jorge Soler homered and Meibrys Viloria had two RBIs for the Royals, who have lost five consecutive games and eight of nine.

The Twins homered three times in a five-run second inning off Danny Duffy (5-6). Cron, reinstated from the injured list earlier in the day, hit a solo homer. Polanco later had a three-run drive, and Cruz followed with a home run.

“We’ve got a lot of ways we can beat you,” Twins starter Kyle Gibson said. “So it’s been fun to watch.”

Max Kepler and Cron had RBI singles in the fifth. Cron finished with three hits.

Gibson (11-4) allowed two earned runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Duffy gave up nine runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He was tagged for four homers, walked two and struck out five. The last time Duffy gave up four homers in one game was May 2, 2018, in Boston.

“They’re not very forgiving,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Nelson Cruz is swinging the bat really well right now. I mean, he’s not missing. You throw something that’s got a little too much of the plate and he’s gonna ride it.”

NATHAN HONORED

Former Twins closer Joe Nathan was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame prior to the game. Nathan spent seven of his 16 major league seasons in Minnesota. He recorded a franchise-record 260 saves in 460 games. Forty-five of Nathan’s 377 career saves came against the Royals.

CHICAGO (AP) — Three months after leaving the Chicago Cubs to deal with a divorce, Ben Zobrist is starting a minor league assignment today in South Bend, Indiana. He’ll be the designated hitter for South Bend Cubs and is expected to remain with the farm club through the weekend. The 38-year-old is expected to progress to Triple-A.
