CLEVELAND (AP) _ New York Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso has won the Home Run Derby by beating Toronto rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on his final swing, 23-22. Alonso went last in all three rounds and won all three with his final swing. Guerrero set a derby record with 91 home runs, including 40 during his overtime win against Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.

CLEVELAND (AP) _ Justin Verlander will start the All-Star Game for the American League for the second time and lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu will make his first start for the National League. Verlander is 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA this year for the Astros, striking out 153 in 126 2/3 innings. Ryu is 10-2 with a major league-leading 1.73 ERA for the Dodgers.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) _ The top three men’s seeds all advanced to the Wimbledon men’s quarterfinals with straight sets victories Monday. Top seed Novak Djokovic dropped eight games in his victory over Ugo Hunbert, second seed Roger Federer picked up his 99th Wimbledon singles match victory by losing just five games against Matteo Berretiini and No. 3 Rafael Nadal won each of his sets against Joao Sousa, 6-2. Unseeded American Sam Querrey also reached the quarters, as did eighth seed Kei Nishikori, David Goffin, Guido Pella and Roberto Bautista-Agut.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) _ Alison Riske pulled off the surprise of the day in the women’s fourth-round action at Wimbledon by defeating top seed Ash Barty, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Serena Williams rolled into the quarterfinals by knocking off Carla Suarez-Navarro in straight sets, but 15-year-old American Coco Gauff is done following a 6-3, 6-3 loss to seventh seed Simona Halep. The other quarterfinals are eighth seed Elina Svitolina, Karloina Muchova, Barbora Strycova, Johanna Konta and Shuai Zhang.

DENVER (AP) _ Two people familiar with the situation say the Oklahoma City Thunder have dealt forward Jerami Grant to the Denver Nuggets for a 2020 first-round draft pick. Grant is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-high 13.6 points and 5.2 rebounds. It’s another first-round selection for the Thunder, who are in line for at least four more, assuming the blockbuster deal that sends Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers goes through.

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. men’s soccer players showed how far, far behind they are the women.

Hours after the American women won their fourth World Cup, the men were outplayed by Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. Jonathan Dos Santos scored in the 73rd minute to give the El Tri a 1-0 victory Sunday night.

Star Christian Pulisic and captain Weston McKennie both left Soldier Field without speaking to reporters about the latest setback to a program still trying to rebound from its failure to qualify for last year’s World Cup.

“Over the course of 90 minutes, Mexico was the better team,” Gregg Berhalter said after his first tournament as U.S. coach. “What we lacked was I think some of the calmness, some of the composure.”

Despite missing their top three forwards, El Tri had 58% possession, outshot the U.S. 20-10 and won their eighth Gold Cup title to six for the U.S., which dropped to 1-5 in Gold Cup finals against its biggest rival.

Days before he reports to Chelsea, Pulisic was by far the best U.S. player, using bursts of speed and cutting ability to create chances, but he rarely touched the ball in the second half. The 20-year-old midfielder was given the tournament’s best young player award after scoring three goals with three assists.

“His contribution to the team this tournament was fantastic,” Berhalter said. “Both sides of the ball. Off the field.”

McKennie, coming off an excellent season with Schalke in the Bundesliga, was given the captain’s arm band for the first time but was largely ineffective.

“I’m not going to comment on his individual performance,” said Berhalter, who also praised McKennie for his play earlier in the tournament.

While the crowd in Lyon, France, was overwhelmingly pro-American as the U.S. beat the Netherlands 2-0 earlier in the day, El Tri supporters in green, white and red in the crowd of 62,493 made Solider Field seem like Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. Whenever American Zack Steffen took a goal kick, there were loud chants of “puto,” an anti-gay slur Mexican fans repeatedly have been admonished for.

CONCACAF general secretary Philippe Moggio and spokesman Alvaro Urrutia did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Mexico scored on a move started by Dos Santos, who plays in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy. He passed the ball to Rodolfo Pizarro, who switched from the left flank to the right in the second half. Pizarro crossed in the penalty area where Raúl Jiménez played a back-heel pass to Dos Santos, who had continued his run. His left-footed shot went by the outstretched arm of Steffen for just his third goal in 46 international appearances.

“We couldn’t quite find the first pass to get out in certain moments,” midfielder Michael Bradley said. “Obviously then you get a little bit tired, and they start to gain some momentum, obviously. It culminates with them getting them the goal.”

Bradley was among four holdovers in the starting lineup from the 11 who began the October 2017 loss at Trinidad and Tobago that cost the U.S. a World Cup berth, joined by Pulisic, midfielder Paul Arriola and forward Jozy Altidore.

Altidore scuffed an open left-footed shot from 10 yards in the seventh minute. Jordan Morris beat goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa with a 6-yard header from Pulisic’s corner kick in the 51st minute, but Andrés Guardado headed the ball away at the goal line. Second-half sub Cristian Roldan’s point-blank shot hit Héctor Moreno on the head and bounced away in the 87th.

“We just couldn’t put our chances away tonight,” Altidore said. “If you look at that 10-, 15-minute period, we kind of lost the game a bit. We were trying to play out of the back and stick to our guns, but maybe it was a time to kind of get up the field and try to get in their half and kind of change that momentum a bit.′

Mexico was playing in its first tournament under new coach Tata Martino. El Tri has not lost a competitive match to the U.S. since 2013, winning three, drawing one and re-establishing itself as the region’s power.

Berhalter, the first American to coach the national team after playing in the World Cup for the U.S., wants a possession-based team. Qualifying for the 2022 World Cup will not start until next summer, leaving the biennial championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean as the first measuring test.

“We’re close,” he said, “but we weren’t there tonight.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Evan Longoria homered with one out in the seventh inning to break up Jack Flaherty’s bid for a no-hitter, and the San Francisco Giants held on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0. The Giants managed only one baserunner against Flaherty until Longoria drove an 0-1 pitch into the left field stands. Longoria has hit five of his 12 home runs this month.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anthony Rendon doubled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, Brian Dozier and Victor Robles homered, and the Washington Nationals beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 to ride a wave of momentum into the All-Star break. Washington has won 10 of 12 to climb past Philadelphia into second place in the NL East.

LYON, France. (AP) _ Goals by Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle carried the U.S. to a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final at Lyon, France. The game was scoreless until Rapinoe converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute, eight minutes before Lavelle doubled the lead. It’s the second straight World Cup title for the Americans, and a record fourth overall.

NEW YORK (AP) _ Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jake Arrieta has bone spurs in his right elbow and will be checked during the All-Star break to see whether surgery is needed. Arrieta gave up a season-high 11 hits over just 4 1/3 innings of Saturday’s 6-5 loss to the New York Mets. Arrieta hinted after the game that he was having physical problems.

UNDATED (AP) _ Reigning NL MVP and Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has pulled out of Monday’s All-Star Home Run Derby with a back injury and will be replaced by Oakland Athletics slugger Matt Chapman. Yelich leads the majors with 31 home runs but has dealt with back issues at times throughout the first half. Yelich had been practicing for the showcase and broke a window on a houseboat outside PNC Park earlier this week while preparing.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ NASCAR driver Justin Haley has earned a victory in just his third career Cup start. Haley won the rain-postponed, rain-shortened race at Daytona, inheriting the lead after a 17-car accident decimated the field and before a lightning strike forced NASCAR to stop the race. Clint Bowyer hit Austin Dillon from behind near the start of the third stage, creating the multi-car wreck and allowing Haley to sail past.

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) _ Matthew Wolff is celebrating his first PGA victory just six weeks after capturing the NCAA title. Wolff made a 26-foot putt from the fringe for an eagle on the final hole to win the 3M Open at 21 under par, beating Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. The 20-year-old Wolff sank the dramatic eagle putt minutes before watching Morikawa just miss his eagle attempt from 22 feet.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Star Kansas running back Pooka Williams has been granted diversion in a domestic battery case, meaning he has a chance to keep the allegation off his record.

Williams, who appeared in court Wednesday, is accused of punching an 18-year-old woman in the stomach and grabbing her by the throat last month. An affidavit says the woman had text messages from Williams admitting to punching her and a police officer found bruises on her.

Williams reportedly told police he pushed the woman when he saw her in a room with other men. Both have said they were in an intimate relationship.

Diversion allows someone to avoid the usual legal procedures and complete specific requirements, which can include rehabilitation programs or fines. Williams’ attorney, Hatem Chahine, said if Williams successfully completes terms of diversion, the domestic battery charge would be dropped and not appear on his legal record, the Lawrence Journal-World reported .

Williams was the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year and a first-team all-Big 12 selection as running back and kick returner last season. He was suspended by the football program Dec. 7.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber and director of student-athlete development Shane Southwell helped guide Team USA to the gold medal at the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) U19 World Cup with a 93-79 win over Mali in the tournament finals in Heraklion, Greece on Sunday (July 7).

Weber, who served as a head coach in the USA Basketball system for the first time in his career, led Team USA to their seventh gold medal at the U19 World Cup, including the first since 2015, with a perfect 7-0 record. Southwell served as the team’s video coordinator, while they were joined by college head coaches Mike Hopkins (Washington) and LeVelle Moton (North Carolina Central) on the coaching staff.

“Obviously, it’s a real honor and I think our player appreciate it, too,” Weber said about capturing the gold medal. “When the national anthem starts playing and you have a gold medal on, it’s special. I know it brought a little bit of tears to me. You’re just so proud to be part of it.”

Team USA averaged better than 100 points per game and won the tournament by an average of 28.7 points per game, including victories over New Zealand (111-71), Lithuania (102-84) and Senegal (87-58) to capture Group A then wins over Latvia (116-66) in the group of 16, Russia (95-80) in the medal round, Lithuania (102-67) in the semifinals and Mali (93-79) in the finals.

Leading tournament Cinderella – Mali — just 42-40 after a back-and-forth first half, the American opened the third period with a 12-0 run that eventually became a 17-2 stretch in a 59-42 lead with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. Mali, who knocked off New Zealand, Puerto Rico and France en route to the finals, never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

“Our guys have been great since day one, they bought in,” said Weber. “Everyone said we played hard, but it was the team that played hard, and man they played hard. When we shared the ball and played hard, and played good defense, we were unstoppable (in the tournament).”

Mississippi State’s Reggie Perry was named the most valuable player of the U19 World Cup after averaging 13.1 points and 7.9 rebounds for Team USA. Weber and the Wildcats will face Perry and the rest of his Bulldog teammates at the Never Forget Tribute Classic on December 14, 2019 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Perry was joined on the five-member all-tournament team by Iowa State’s Tyrese Haliburton.

Weber has been actively involved in USA Basketball for close to two decades. He served as a court coach at the trials for the 1991 Pan American Games Team and spent time with the 1989 USA Men’s World University Games and 1985 R. Williams Jones Cup Team that were led K-State alum and former Purdue head coach Gene Keady. Weber most recently served on USA Basketball’s Men’s Junior National Committee, which selects coaches and players for its college-aged competitions.

Now in his eighth season at K-State, Weber has led the Wildcats to a 150-89 (.628) overall record, five NCAA Tournament appearances (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019) and two Big 12 regular-season championships (2013, 2019) in his tenure. His 150 wins are the third-most by a head coach (joining Hall of Famers Jack Hartman and Tex Winter) in school history and the most since Hartman retired as the school’s all-time winningest coach in 1986.

Weber has helped the Wildcats to consecutive 25-win campaigns the past two seasons for the first time in school history, which includes a trip to the Elite Eight in 2017-18 and a share of the Big 12 regular-season title in 2018-19.

Southwell, who was recently promoted to director of student-athlete development after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant, guided the Wildcats to 92 wins and four NCAA Tournament appearances during his four-year playing career. He also played professionally in Mexico, Australia and Switzerland.

Dating back to 1979 as the FIBA Junior World Championship, the U19 World Cup is played every two years and features the world’s top players 19 years old and younger. Team USA has now won seven gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal in 14 U19 competitions, including gold in four of the past six U19 World Cups (2009, 2013, 2015 and 2019).

LYON, France — Adrianna Franch became the first Salina South Cougar to win the World Cup after the United States women’s national team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday. French played her College soccer at Oklahoma State University and is a goal keeper for the Portland Thorns. 

Franch grew up in Salina, Kansas. She attended Salina South High School and was the starting goalkeeper for three seasons, but did not play her senior season due to an injury suffered playing basketball. She earned All-State, All-Southwest Region and All-League honors, as well as league MVP during her time at South. Franch was also a star basketball player earning first-team All-County and All-League honors as well as an honorable mention All-State performer.
