EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk girls dropped a tough one to Wichita Southeast 42-39 Saturday afternoon in the Glacier’s Edge 3rd place game. The game was tied at 23 at halftime, but tough pressure defense and good outside shooting by the Buffaloes prevailed. Senior Kasey Hazel led the Salthawks in scoring with 12. Jayla Bynum scored 9 and Gabbie Posch chipped in 8. Hutchinson defeated the Buffaloes in a previous meeting in Wichita 44-39 on Jan. 11. Hutchinson will travel to Haysville-Campus on Tuesday night. Hutchinson’s record is now 7-5.

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk girls jumped off to a 18-5 1st-quarter lead Thursday in the Glacier’s Edge opening round game to win over Shawnee Heights 51-20. Senior Kasey Hazel led the Salthawks in scoring with 21. Sophomore Tina Robertson chipped in 6 points off the bench and Morgan Armbrust had 6. Jayla Bynum scored 5 and Mckenzie Ontjes had 4 points. Hutch will take on host team Emporia, who defeated Great Bend 41-37 in 2 overtimes. Emporia is now 6-5, while Hutchinson runs its record to 7-3.  Tip time tonight for Hutch is 7:45 p.m. on Country 102.9.

COLBY, Kan. — Hutch High trailed Scott City by 7 points 36-29 going into the final quarter Saturday in the 4th place consolation bracket finals, but the Beavers prevailed at the free throw line hitting 7 of 10 tosses to win over the Salthakws 49-36.

The Salthawks dug themselves a hole to start the game allowing Scott City 4 three pointers to trail 16-9 after the 1st quater.

Senior Davion Vigil finished with 8 points to lead Salthawks (3-8). A quartet of Salthawks, Cole, Ontjes, Webster and Turner chipped in 6 each.

Scott City’s Senior Jordan Horn was impressive with 15 points including 3 first have treys to lead all scores. Scott City (5-6) went 2-1 in the tourney after finishing 5th in last years tournament.

Hutch High finished 1-2 in the Orange Black Classic.

HUTCHINSON, KS-Hutchinson senior running back Brody Smith and Nickerson’s Tristan Isley each played in the 2018 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Smith and Isley were picked from over 7,000 players nationwide to participate.

Smith and Isley played on the North team, who won the game 14-13 at James Ray Stadium the home of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. Both played running back for the North team coached by former Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne.

This game was the second of three 2018 Blue-Grey All-American Bowls being played this winter. The first was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on December 18 and the final game will played on January 13 in Jacksonville, Florida.

FORT MYERS, Florida – The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team hit a eight 3-pointers and then had to survive a more than 5-minute scoreless drought to the game to knock off No. 21 Florida Southwestern State 60-56 in the final game of the FSW Classic at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons complete their holiday trip 2-0 and have won 11-straight holiday games dating back to 2001. Overall, Hutchinson has won nine consecutive games to improve to 11-2. Florida Southwestern State falls to 14-4 having its six-game winning streak snapped. The Buccaneers also lose on their home floor for the first time in eight games.

Freshman Sara Cramer knocked down for of Hutchinson’s eight 3-pointers on Saturday. She scored eight of her game-high 16 points in a third period where Hutchinson extended a four-point halftime lead with a 24-14 third quarter. When Kelsey Brett hit a 3-pointer from the right corner at the third-quarter buzzer, Hutchinson carried a 52-38 lead into the final period.

The Dragons led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter and led 60-44 after an Alicia Brown trey with 5 minutes to go. Those were Hutchinson’s last points as the Buccaneers scored the final 12 points of the game, pulling within 60-56 on their only 3-pointer of the game. Elizabeth Spencer hit the shot with 40 seconds remaining.

Brown finished with 14 points for Hutchinson. Jada Mickens had 10 and Dejanae Roebuck had nine.

The Blue Dragons were 8 of 25 from 3-point range.

Erna Normil had 16 points to lead Southwestern Florida State.

Hutch trailed 14-11 after the first quarter, but outscored the Buccaneers 17-9 in the second stanza to lead 28-24 at halftime

Hutchinson returns to conference play on Wednesday against Cowley at 5:30 p.m. in Arkansas City.
