KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is questionable against the Minnesota Vikings, raising the possibility the league MVP could return after missing just one game to a dislocated kneecap. Mahomes practiced on a limited basis throughout the week, just as he did last week. But rather than being listed out, as he was for the Green Bay Packers, he was given the official injury designation that means it is uncertain whether Mahomes will play.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — No. 22 Kansas State and rival Kansas are both coming off wins heading into their annual Sunflower State Showdown. The Wildcats are still flying high off their upset of then-No. 5 Oklahoma last week. The Jayhawks are coming off a game-ending field goal that beat Texas Tech. The Wildcats and Jayhawks meet Saturday in Lawrence.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks cruised to a win over the Pittsburg State Gorillas, 102-42, in their second and final exhibition of the season inside of Allen Fieldhouse on Thursday, with three players in double figures, including a game high 19 points from Kansas sophomore Ochai Agbaji. Joining Agbaji in double-figures, sophomore David McCormack scored 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field and Devon Dotson scored 12 points on 4-of-13 from the field. In total, 12 Jayhawks put points on the board.

National Headlines

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals get a hero’s welcome today from a city that had been thirsting for a World Series championship for nearly a century. Tens of thousands of fans are expected for a parade honoring the Nationals, who won a nail-biting, come-from-behind victory against the Houston Astros in Game 7 to clinch the World Series.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets have chosen one of their former players to be their new manager. The team has announced that Carlos Beltrán will replace Mickey Callaway. Beltrán was a nine-time All-Star during 20 major league seasons and played for the Mets from 2005-11. He has no managerial experience. Beltrán interviewed to become New York Yankees manager after the 2017 season, when Aaron Boone was hired, and spent this season as an adviser to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 6 Florida and No. 9 Georgia meet today in Jacksonville for what has become an elimination game. The loser almost certainly will be knocked out of contention for the College Football Playoff, essentially turning the neutral-site game into a quarterfinal matchup for the national title. The game is one of two on today’s schedule that match ranked teams. No. 15 SMU visits No. 24 Memphis tonight.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Defending champion Nelly Korda is the leader after three rounds of the LPGA Swinging Skirts in Taiwan. Korda shot a 7-under 65 today to take a three-stroke lead over Minjee Lee. Caroline Masson shot 66 and was in third place, four strokes behind. Jin Young Ko, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, withdrew during the round. No reason was given.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Girl’s Volleyball Class 3A-4A competition at the Sports Arena had some great matches as four teams advance into the quarterfinal matches on Saturday at 1:00 pm.  Andale looked strong as they defeated Louisburg 25-10, 25-19 in 2 sets and Nickerson 25-10, 28-26, 25-16. Then Andale put away Horton late 25-11, 25-13 to go 3-0 in pool play.  Louisburg bounced back to defeat Holton 26-24, 23-25, 25-20 and edged Nickerson 19-25, 25-10, 25-20.

Andale will now play Towanda-Circle at 1:00 pm on Court A, and Topeka Hayden will take on Louisburg on Court B at 1:00 pm as well. Towanda-Circle and Topeka Hayden advanced out of Pool B.  Towanda-Circle went 2-1 and Topeka Hayden 3-0 in pool play.

The Winners will advance to the Championship match at 2:30 pm and the losers will play in the consolation match also at 2:30 pm.

Nickerson had a great showing by going 1-2 in Pool play in some very close matches.

LIBERAL – Sophomore Tyler Brown had career highs for points and 3-pointers to lead the No. 10-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team to its 12th consecutive season-opening victory on Friday at the Seward County/Pizza Hut Classic.

The Blue Dragons shot 66.7 percent in the second half to defeat Eastern Oklahoma State 93-74 at Seward County’s Green House.

Hutchinson opened a season on the road for just the second time in 30 seasons and opened in a road classic for the first time since the 1988-89 season. The Blue Dragons are now 69-19 all-time in 88 season openers.

Brown knocked down a career-high 6 of 7 3-pointers for a career-high 20 points to lead the Blue Dragons.

Five Blue Dragons scored in double figure. Sophomore D.J. Mitchell had 14 points and five assists. Freshman Majok Kuath debuted with 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting.

Sophomore Saquan Singleton was 5 of 7 shooting for 12 points and a career-high seven assists. Freshman Josh Baker had 12 points.

The Blue Dragons shot 57.1 percent for the game, hitting 32 of 56 overall shots. The Dragons were 11 of 23 from 3-point range and 16 of 22 from the foul line. The Dragons out-rebounded Eastern Oklahoma State 50-27. Singleton had eight rebounds to lead Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons held Eastern Oklahoma State to 34.2 percent overall shooting (26 of 76). EOSC hit 6 of 37 3-pointers and 12 of 17 from the foul line.

Hutchinson turned the ball over 29 times, while forcing only 11 Eastern turnovers.

The Blue Dragons led only 34-24 at halftime despite shooting 46.2 percent. Despite the numerous turnovers, the Dragons racked up 59 points in the second half, hitting 20 of 30 shots overall, including eight 3-pointers.

Hutchinson is now 3-1 all-time against Eastern Oklahoma State. The teams last played in 2009.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk football team finished the season (2-7) as they were defeated by Manhattan High School 48-21 in Manhattan Friday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have hired Mike Matheny as manager. The 49-year-old Matheny was manager of the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals from 2012-18, going 591-474 and becoming the first manager to reach the postseason his first four seasons. Matheny was fired in July 2018 by the Cardinals. He was hired last November by the Royals as a special adviser for player development. He will take over for Ned Yost, who announced his retirement last month.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Charlie Brewer threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns as No. 12 Baylor beat West Virginia 17-14 to remain the Big 12’s only undefeated team. The 8-0 Bears have won 10 in a row overall. John Mayers kicked a go-ahead 36-yard field goal with 10:19 left. West Virginia had a chance to tie, but nose tackle Bravvion Roy blocked a field goal when the Mountaineers had to re-kick after a penalty

UNDATED (AP) — TCU and Oklahoma State meet after both got needed wins in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs and Cowboys have freshman starting quarterbacks, and the league’s longest-tenured coaches. Gary Patterson is in 19th season at TCU and Mike Gundy in his 15th season at Oklahoma State. Both had lost three of four games before wins last week that knocked other Big 12 teams out of the Top 25. TCU beat Texas, and Oklahoma State beat Iowa State.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers reach the halfway point of their season undefeated, beating the Arizona Cardinals 28-25 Thursday night.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins tackle Trent Williams says he had a tumor removed from his head and has to get checked every six months to make sure he’s OK. The seven-time Pro Bowler says he told the team of the medical issue six years ago. He says the growth of the tumor was downplayed until the cancer diagnosis by a Virginia hospital. He held out during a series of off-season surgeries. Williams failed his team physical this week because of helmet discomfort.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jayce Tingler was presented as San Diego’s manager and he was wearing the club’s classic brown jersey, which is expected to return next season. The 38-year-old is a first-time big league manager and takes over a team that last had a winning record in 2010. San Diego has not hired a manager with prior big league experience since Jack McKeon in 1988.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees have declined their 2020 option for Edwin Encarnación. The three-time All-Star was picked up in June from Seattle to plug the banged up squad. Cash from the Mariners in the trade meant the deal cost New York just $8 million of what he was owed, including the buyout. Encarnación was due $25 million in 2020. Encarnación hit .308 while the Yankees pounded Minnesota in the AL Division Series, but he slumped badly in the AL Championship Series against Houston.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 Conference has issued public reprimands and fines of $25,000 against Kansas State and TCU for how the schools handled fans storming the field to celebrate after home victories over ranked teams.

Kansas also received a reprimand, but wasn’t fined after the Jayhawks beat Texas Tech on Saturday.

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said conference schools have a duty to provide a safe game environment.

The league doesn’t have a policy prohibiting spectators on the field for postgame celebrations, but Bowlsby said home teams have to provide adequate security measures for student-athletes, coaches, game officials and spectators. That includes safe passage from the playing field to the locker room, and protection of the visiting team bench area.

Kansas State upset then-No. 5 Oklahoma 48-41 last Saturday, and TCU won 37-27 over then-No. 15 Texas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On a day the Kansas City Royals introduced their new manager, the team quietly declined Alex Gordon’s $23M option, buy him out for $4M and hope to bring him back at a rate that makes sense. The move makes Gordon a free agent.

Heyman reports that the team will attempt to bring him back at a more reasonable rate next season.

The 35-year-old recorded a .741 OPS with 76 RBI last year.
