HESSTON, Kan. – The Buhler Girls’ Golf team captured 1st place in 4A State Golf at the Hesston Golf Course in Hesston Tuesday. Haley Miller captured 2nd while Lauren Specht finished 8th.  Haley Engelland , Kate McPherson, Callie Cooper and Rylie Cannon all contributed to Buhler capturing their school record 50 State Championships

Buhler beat Wamego 755-768 for the 4A championship. It’s the third girls golf title in Buhler history, and first since going back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. Winfield and Andale took third and fourth place respectively.

Morgan Brasser from Andale improved on a second place finish in 2018 to win the individual state title, shooting a +16 to finish 10 strokes ahead of second place Haley Miller of Buhler. Brasser was the only golfer to shoot a sub-80 round in the two-day tournament, fighting through tough conditions in clinching the win with a 78 Tuesday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutch High Sophomore Reaghan Martin finished 14th in the 6A State competition that was held at Carey Park on Monday and Tuesday.

 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Both the HutchCC men’s and women’s basketball teams have been predicted to finish in the runner-up position of the Jayhawk Conference Western Division by the recent coaches poll.

The Blue Dragon men open up on the road Nov. 1 in Liberal.

The acrimonious rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, once the longest continually played rivalry west of the Mississippi River, will resume next season in Kansas City. The schools have agreed to play six times with four of those matchups taking place on their respective campuses.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already deep into his rehabilitation from a knee injury suffered in last week’s win in Denver, though coach Andy Reid is declining to put any timetable on the return of the reigning league MVP. In the meantime, Reid says, the Chiefs are preparing backup Matt Moore to start Sunday night’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers. Rookie quarterback Kyle Shurmur would serve as the backup.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Last year as a freshman, Brock Purdy was Iowa State’s third-string quarterback when he stepped on the field for his first meaningful action against Oklahoma State. He led the Cyclones to a big win. Now, Purdy is an established star for No. 23 Iowa State and neutralizing him will be a major challenge for Oklahoma State on Saturday.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — With its defense continuing to struggle, it will be up to Sam Ehlinger and the offense to carry No. 15 Texas the rest of the way. The Longhorns escaped a home loss to Kansas when Ehlinger drove the Longhorns to the winning field goal on the final play over the weekend. Coach Tom Herman says no one on his team is satisfied with the defensive performance as Kansas became the latest team to shred the Longhorns.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Hastings College is adding men’s volleyball and women’s wrestling teams to its athletic program beginning in 2020-21. The school will increase its sports offerings to 26 teams and all will be affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and Great Plains Athletic Conference.

(AP) _ Sony Michel ran for three touchdowns and Tom Brady was 31 of 45 passing for 249 yards and a TD as the New England Patriots blanked the New York Jets, 33-0 to improve to 7-0. The Patriots took advantage of five turnovers by Sam Darnold and stayed 1 ½ games ahead of Buffalo atop the AFC East. Brady set the tone with a lone touchdown drive capped by Michel’s three-yard run.

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball preseason poll for the first time in its history. Tom Izzo’s Spartans received 60 of 65 first-place votes as the runaway choice. No. 2 Kentucky and No. 3 Kansas received the other first-place votes. Duke, Louisville, Florida, Maryland, Gonzaga, North Carolina and Villanova round out the top 10.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ New Orleans Pelicans forward and first overall draft pick Zion Williamson will miss the first six to eight weeks of the NBA season following surgery today to repair a torn right meniscus. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound former Duke star averaged 23.2 points in four preseason games. The 19-year-old Williamson turned pro after averaging 22.6 points and landing on the ACC’s All-Defensive team in his lone season with the Blue Devils.

BOSTON (AP) _ The Boston Celtics have held onto one of their top young players by signing forward Jaylen Brown to a four-year contract extension that could be worth up to $115 million. The third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft has averaged 11.2 points and four rebounds in three seasons. He started just 25 of 74 games while averaging 13 points and 4.2 rebounds last season, but he was one of the few bright spots for Team USA at the World Cup over the summer.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) _ Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn said quarterback Matt Ryan ran in a pool today to test his injured ankle and has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Seattle. Ryan was injured during the first half of yesterday’s 37-10 loss to the Rams, causing backup Matt Schaub to finish the game. The 34-year-old Ryan has not missed a start since 2009, a streak that covers 154 regular-season games.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have traded cornerback and 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley to the Houston Texans for a third-round selection in next year’s draft. Conley never developed into a consistent pass defender during his three seasons in Oakland. He was part of a defense that allowed Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers to throw five TD passes in a 42-24 loss yesterday.

HOUSTON (AP) _ The Houston Astros say Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke will follow Gerrit Cole in their rotation for the World Series, with Game 4 to serve as a bullpen day. Cole and Verlander were 20-game winners this season, and Cole is 19-0 in 25 starts since a loss to the White Sox on May 22. Greinke will get a chance to hit in Washington after batting .280 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 56 plate appearances this year.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Border War is returning to college basketball.

The acrimonious rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, once the longest continually played series west of the Mississippi River, will resume next season in Kansas City. The schools have agreed to play six times, with four of those matchups taking place on their respective campuses.

“Having coached a lot of games versus Missouri in my time in Kansas, I could not be more excited to start this series up again,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self, who had been among the biggest reasons the teams never played, said in a statement announcing the series Monday night.

The series began in 1907 with a pair of wins by Missouri in Lawrence. The schools went on to play 269 times over 105 years. The last meeting was on Feb. 25, 2012, when the No. 4 Jayhawks rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit to beat the No. 3 Tigers in overtime at Allen Fieldhouse.

The reason the series ended can be traced to Missouri’s decision to depart its longtime home in the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. During a period of chaotic conference realignment, the Tigers moved to what they considered a more lucrative league — even though it made far less geographic sense — and in doing so left the Big 12 scrambling for its very survival.

Many coaches and administrators at Kansas not only took umbrage with their decision but held a grudge for years. Among them was Self, who was asked periodically over the years if he could envision playing the Tigers again, and was usually steadfast in his refusal to schedule them.

Tensions finally cooled enough that on Oct. 22, 2017, the schools agreed to play an exhibition game in Kansas City dubbed “The Showdown for Relief” to raise money for hurricane relief efforts.

Kansas won 93-87 in their first meeting in five years.

The thousands of fans who turned up for the game, coupled with the buzz it generated on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri border, piqued the interest of new Kansas athletic director Jeff Long. He was not part of the conference realignment mess and harbored no ill will toward Missouri, making him the ideal figure to help patch up relationships and ultimately resume the rivalry.

“One of the best aspects of college athletics is rivalries,” Long said. “We have quietly sought input from fans and supporters on the renewal of this series and we believe the overriding sentiments are that this historic rivalry should resume.”

After the initial game scheduled for Dec. 12, 2020, at the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City, the schools will alternate between Allen Fieldhouse and Mizzou Arena for the next four games. The final scheduled matchup will return to Sprint Center, though it’s possible the series continues.

It’s also possible that the basketball matchups are just the beginning.

“Hopefully, this renewal on the hardwood will lead to more opportunities down the road in other sports,” Tigers athletic director Jim Sterk said. “Rivalries make college sports great, and there is no question that when Missouri and Kansas face off in any sport, it’s important to a lot of people.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was back in the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice facility Monday, going through some extensive pool therapy and other rehabilitation exercises on his injured right knee.

That alone was a good sign for the reigning league MVP.

Mahomes dislocated the patella in the knee while sneaking for a first down in last week’s win in Denver. But what initially looked to be a rather serious injury is appearing less severe by the day, particularly after an X-ray taken at the stadium and an MRI taken Friday came back negative.

“That turned out as good as we could possibly imagine,” Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said as the team returned from a few days off. “He’s worked out here all weekend and is progressing nicely.”

Burkholder and coach Andy Reid declined to put a timetable on his return. The Chiefs play the Packers on Sunday night, then have three more games before their bye week.

In the meantime, Reid said, backup quarterback Matt Moore is preparing to start against Green Bay, with rookie Kyle Shurmur likely to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the backup.

“We’ll see how it all goes,” Reid said, “but we have a lot of confidence in Matt, having known him for a short period of time really but also knowing what he’s done when he’s had the opportunities to play. He’ll get himself ready to go, which he does every week.”

Moore played the rest of the way after Mahomes hurt his knee on a seemingly innocuous quarterback sneak in the second quarter Thursday night. Moore was rough at times, but the former Panthers and Dolphins quarterback did connect with Tyreek Hill on a long touchdown pass.

Most importantly, he didn’t make any major mistakes in what became a 30-6 rout.

“He works extremely hard at it,” Reid said. “He doesn’t get a lot of reps in practice. He stands in the back and goes through all the different motions as if he’s actually playing there. As well as you can be prepared, he does that without being the starter.”

Moore has been on a whirlwind ride since the Chiefs called him ahead of their preseason finale, searching for a veteran backup after Chad Henne broke his ankle. He had been moonlighting as a scout for the Dolphins and a prep football coach when general manager Brett Veach reached out.

Before he knew it, Moore was on the practice field in Kansas City, trying desperately to pick up enough of Reid’s intricate and involved offensive system in time for the regular season.

“It’s been a short period,” Reid said, “but he’s digested what we’re doing and done it well. He’s been around long enough that he’s probably seen most of what we’re doing.”

Moore could have a little extra help against the Packers.

While left guard Andrew Wylie is not quite back from a sprained ankle, Reid indicated that left tackle Eric Fisher and wide receiver Sammy Watkins are day to day with their injuries. Fisher had core muscle surgery a few weeks ago while Watkins has been rehabbing a strained hamstring.

“We’ll just see how things go with them the next few days,” Reid said.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Chiefs could be without slot cornerback Kendall Fuller for a while. He fractured his right thumb against Houston and did not play at Denver, and Burkholder said Fuller had surgery on Friday in Los Angeles before returning to Kansas City on Sunday.

Reid said his approach with all of those injured players — whether it’s the franchise quarterback or anybody else on the roster — will be the same as always: “If you can play, you play. If you can’t, you can’t, and I expect the next guy to step up and play.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson High is seeded #6 and will take on #11 seed Liberal in Sub-State #3 on October 26th.  If they win they will then match up with either Derby (seeded #3 at 29-8) or #14 Wichita Heights HS.

Buhler High School will participate in the 4A Sub-State at Towanda-Circle High School and be seeded #7.  They will take on El Dorado High School.  That match winner will take #2 seed Circle.

#5 seed Nickerson High (24-12) will travel to Chapman to take on Wellington (14-20).  That winner will advance to take on the winner between Winfield and Chapman,

Haven High School will host one of the 3A Sub-State including the following teams;
Anthony/Harper-Chaparral HS; Cheney HS; Halstead HS; Haven HS; Hesston HS; Kingman HS; Wichita Collegiate HS; Wichita-Trinity Academy.

#2 seed Hutchinson-Central Christian (23-11) will participate in the Little River 1A Sub-State Tuesday with a first round bye.  They will play the winner of St. John-Hudson and Langdon-Fairfield.

#4 seed Pretty Prairie will participate in the Attica Sub-State and will play #5 seed Coldwater-South Central High School at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 22nd.

 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Now 7-1, Blue Dragon Football makes a jump to No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Rankings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Carey Park is not very forgiving, and when there are 50 mph gusts it can be even worse but Hutch High’s Reaghan Martin was up to the challenge.  Reaghan carded a 90 and is 13 strokes back of the leaders sitting at 9th place after day 1 of the 2 day tournament.

HESSTON, Kan. – Buhler Crusaders as team shot 377 to give them a 3 stroke lead over Winfield in the 4A State Girls Golf tournament in Hesston. Haley Miller led the charge with an 85, just 5 strokes off the leader. Lauren Specht is at 87, then Haley Engelland carded a 99. Kate McPherson, Callie Cooper and Rylie Cannon all made the cut, which assures that the Crusaders will have a strong shot at placing high, if not winning state.  Day 2 starts on Tuesday.

Nickerson’s Makenna Dotson shot a 114, but did not make the cut for day 2.
