HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk football team (1-5) travels to Salina to take on  the Salina South Cougars (1-5) tonight.  Due to possible bad weather, the kick-off has been moved to 6:30 pm.

Two former Hutchinson Community College football players were among the players drafted in the inaugural XFL Draft this week.

Defensive lineman Toby Johnson and offensive lineman Kamalie Matthews were selected by the New York Guardians and the Houston Roughnecks, respectively. Johnson and Matthews were Blue Dragon teammates in 2010.

Johnson played at Hutchinson in 2010 and 2011, starting in all 21 games he played. Johnson had 49 total tackles, five quarterback sacks and two blocked kicks in his Blue Dragon career.

Johnson transferred to the University of Georgia where he played in 24 games.

Johnson then signed a free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2015. He spent time in the Titans, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears organizations. Johnson appeared in two regular-season games for the Vikings in 2016.

Matthews was a one-year Blue Dragon in 2010, but wasn’t on the 55-man roster. Matthews went onto Murray State University and played three years there. Matthews was a free-agent invitee of the Seattle Seahawks in 2016.

The newest competitor to the National Football League will begin its first season in February.

A total of 52 former NJCAA players had their names called in the five-phase draft. A total of 34 NJCAA programs had a former player selected. The draft was completed in five phases. After a quarterback assignment was made to each of the league’s eight teams, the next four phases consisted of 10 rounds each to fill specific roster needs. The final round was an open round where teams were free to select any remaining players in the draft pool.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Several area high school tennis players will participate in matches at various different sites this weekend.

Hutch High’s Gracie Foster will compete in Singles at the 6A Girls Tennis Tournament at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka.  Team mates Tia Hines and Elizabeth Jackson, both Freshman, will participate in the doubles competition. Matches on Friday begin at 10:30 am.

Buhler will take a strong team to class 4A in Winfield. Brittany Teufel and Aliyah Frederick will compete in singles. Bethany Yutzy and Kendall Birney along with Payton DeMeyer and Alex Hutton will compete in doubles.

In Class 3-2-1A @ Prairie Villege Sterling’s Karissa Wilson will compete in singles. Kinzie Comly and Aubrey Anderson along with natalie Schweizer and Riley Richter will have doubles matches.

DENVER (AP) — Reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes injured his right knee in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 30-6 victory over the Denver Broncos. Mahomes was hurt on a quarterback sneak early in the second quarter. Backup Matt Moore threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs rallied around their fallen superstar to snap a two-game losing streak.

UNDATED (AP) — Fifth-ranked Oklahoma and number 18 Baylor are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the Big 12 at the midpoint of the season. Coach Matt Rhule has Baylor on an eight-game winning streak, which is the longest in the league. Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard and Texas Tech’s Jordyn Brooks are among players having standout seasons.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas has been picked as the favorite to win the Big 12 men’s basketball title. The Jayhawk’s NCAA record run of winning the conference 14 years in a row ended last season. They were picked by the league’s coaches to finish ahead of Baylor and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders made it to the NCAA championship game last season before losing to Virginia in overtime. Texas Tech and Kansas State shared the regular season title. Iowa State won the Big 12 postseason tournament with a win over Kansas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer has reached an agreement with Stewart-Haas Racing to return to the No. 14 Ford next season. Bowyer has been with SHR for three of his 15 seasons in the Cup Series. Bowyer is 11th in the 12-driver playoff field going into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway. The bottom four drivers in the standings will be eliminated after Kansas.

NEW YORK (AP) _ George Springer and Carlos Correa each hit three-run homers and the Houston Astros got another wild ace off the hook to beat the sloppy New York Yankees 8-3 and reach the cusp of a second World Series visit in three years. The Astros lead the AL Championship Series 3-1, putting the 2017 World Series winners on the brink of a showdown with the NL champion Washington Nationals. Houston still has Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole queued up for this series. Verlander starts Game 5 on Friday night.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians say catcher Roberto Pérez had surgery to remove bone spurs in his right ankle but should be able to start spring training in February. Pérez had a career-best season for the Indians, who made him their full-time starter after trading Yan Gomes to Washington in November. Pérez batted .239 with 24 homers and 63 RBIs in 119 games. He also played at a Gold Glove level defensively, not committing a passed ball in 118 games.

CHICAGO (AP) —The Chicago Cubs shook up their player-development operation, with Matt Dorey taking over as senior vice president of player development and directors of pitching and hitting being appointed. Dorey, Chicago’s director of amateur scouting the past six years, was previously a scout for the Boston Red Sox and a college coach. Former major league reliever Craig Breslow has been appointed director of pitching. Justin Stone is the director of hitting and Bobby Basham director of player development.

CHICAGO (AP) — Two-time All-Star forward Luol Deng has signed with the Chicago Bulls and retired as a member of the team that drafted him. The No. 7 overall pick in 2004, Deng averaged 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds over 15 seasons with Chicago, Cleveland, Miami, the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota. He was part of seven playoff teams _ six with Chicago, one with Miami _ and averaged 15.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in 62 postseason games.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Basketball legend Michael Jordan unveiled the first of two medical clinics he and his family funded in Charlotte, North Carolina, to provide medical care to underprivileged members of the community. The six-time NBA champion participated in the grand opening of the $7 million Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic. Tears streamed down Jordan’s cheeks as he spoke about giving back to the community.

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (AP) — Jason Day’s attempt to impress International team captain Ernie Els for a spot at the Presidents Cup in December took a positive turn when the Australian shot a 6-under 66 to sit two strokes off the lead after the opening round of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. It’s the first event of a three-tournament PGA Tour swing through Asia.

DENVER (AP) — Now the wait begins to see how long it takes Patrick Mahomes to return from a gruesome right knee injury.

Waiting in the wings, just in case: 35-year-old backup Matt Moore.

Mahomes, the MVP quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, was hurt on a second-quarter sneak in a 30-6 win over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid doesn’t yet know how long Mahomes may be sidelined as the Chiefs (5-2) snapped a two-game skid with Moore stepping in and the Chiefs defense stepping up (nine sacks and a defensive score).

“We need time to evaluate,” Reid said. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Facing fourth-and-short deep in Denver territory, Mahomes picked up a first down by sneaking through the line.

As the pile began to clear, Mahomes didn’t jump up.

Struggling to straighten his right knee, he tossed his helmet to the side and covered his face with both hands. His teammates immediately checked on him. Seeing Mahomes’ condition, receiver Tyreek Hill put his hands on his helmet in concern — a feeling shared by a legion of Chiefs fans. Mahomes is a big reason why Kansas City was a preseason favorite to reach its second straight AFC championship game.

Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. showed his respect by coming over and shaking Mahomes’ hand.

“You looked at it and were like, ‘Oh no, there is something wrong with him,’” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said. “You just hope a guy isn’t injured that bad and can come back.”

One of the members of the Kansas City medical team worked on the knee to help straighten it out. A cart was summoned to take him away, but Mahomes refused to use it.

Instead, he put an arm around each trainer and made his way off the field. Mahomes, who entered the game with a sore ankle, then slowly made his way into the locker room.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson wrote on his Twitter account: “Praying for you bro.” It was a similar sentiment shared by Houston QB Deshaun Watson on social media: “Praying my bro @PatrickMahomes is straight!”

The reigning MVP was 10 of 11 for 76 yards and a 125.8 rating before his injury.

Mahomes has thrown 15 touchdown passes and one interception this season. Last weekend in a loss to Houston, Mahomes recorded his 14th career game with at least three TD passes. That’s third-most in team history.

Moore’s number was called. Before going in, he tapped Mahomes on the chest and wished him well. When Moore entered the huddle, he had a quick conversation with his teammates.

“Just something to let them know we were going to be all right. Kind of got them fired up a little bit,” said Moore, who didn’t play last season. “I just said, ‘Hey, I need you guys. You guys need me. Let’s go here. Help me and let’s go.’”

It worked. Moore finished 10 of 19 for 117 yards and a 57-yard TD strike to Hill in the third quarter. Moore also had a grasp of the playbook despite being signed around two months ago after an injury Chad Henne.

“He goes, ‘Let’s go. I know it all. I’m good. Just call it. Let’s roll,’” Reid recounted. “He’s got ice water in the veins, that whole deal. He doesn’t flinch. There’s no panic.”

After the game, Moore said Mahomes addressed the team in the locker room and praised the defense for a nine-sack performance.

Then, he complimented Moore.

“He said something about me, yes,” Moore said. “He said, ‘How about my guy, Matt?’ … I’m trying to downplay it.

“We’re excited for the win, division opponent, road game — all things that are hard to do,” Moore added. “At the same, a guy like Patrick gets hurt it can be deflating. He’s obviously a huge part of this team, a huge part of the league. You hate to see that. We all know that injuries are part of this game. He’s doing to do his best to get back out as quick as he can.”

ELLSWORTH, Kan. – Trinity Catholic Varsity Volleyball traveld to Ellsworth for a triangular meet and came away with two wins.  The Celtic girls defeated host Ellsworth in 3, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-17.  Then they defeated Hoisington 25-15. 25-20.

McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson Bullpup Soccer team got a win over the Hutchinson Salthawks 3-1.  The final home game will be next Tuesday at the Salthawk Soccer Comples versus Salina South.

IRVING, TX.  – For the ninth straight season and 19th time overall, Kansas tops the men’s basketball Big 12 Preseason Poll. The Jayhawks received eight of 10 first-place votes.

KU has captured 18 outright or shared Big 12 regular season championships in the previous 23 campaigns. The program’s 14 consecutive (2005-18) and 61 overall conference titles are both NCAA records.

Baylor and Texas Tech were picked second and third, respectively, with each receiving a first-place nod. Texas (fourth) and West Virginia (fifth) rounded out the top five. Other placings were 6. Oklahoma State, 7. Iowa State, 8. Oklahoma, 9. Kansas State and 10. TCU. K-State and TTU shared the 2019 Big 12 regular season title while Iowa State won the postseason championship.

The Big 12 sent 90 percent of its men’s basketball teams to postseason play in 2019 for the second consecutive season. Texas Tech punched a ticket to its first Final Four and finished as national runner-up. The Big 12 also topped the nation in NET/RPI ratings for the fifth time out of the last six years.

The Big 12 will tip off 2019-20 with its annual media day, slated for Wednesday, October 23 at Sprint Center in Kansas City – site of the 2020 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship.

MANHATTAN – Senior guard Xavier Sneed has been named one of 20 watch list members for the 2020 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Wednesday.

Named after 16-year pro and four-time MVP Julius Erving, the 1994 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, the annual award is in its sixth year and recognizes the top small forward in Division I men’s basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Sneed was one of two Big 12 players named to the watch list, including Texas Tech transfer Chris Clarke. Other candidates include Arizona’s Josh Green, Duke’s Matthew Hurt, Florida’s Scottie Lewis, Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert, Harvard’s Seth Towns, Kentucky’s Kahlil Whitney, Louisville’s Jordan Nwora, Memphis’ Precious Achiuwa, Oregon State’s Tres Tinkle, Providence’s Alpha Diallo, Purdue’s Nojel Eastern, St. John’s L.J. Figueroa, Syracuse’s Elijah Hughes, Vermont’s Anthony Lamb, Villanova’s Saddiq Bey, Washington’s Jaden McDaniels, Washington State’s C.J. Elleby and Xavier’s Naji Marshall.

Fans are encouraged to vote for Sneed throughout the season using the new Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies, which goes live on Friday and will determine the 10 semifinalists, five finalists and eventual winner.

The 20-member watch list for the Erving Award will be narrowed to just 10 by mid-February. In March, five finalists will be presented to Julius Erving and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles on April 10, 2020.

Previous winners of the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award include Arizona’s Stanley Johnson (2015), Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine (2016), Villanova’s Josh Hart (2017) and Mikal Bridges (2018) and Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura (2019).

A 6-foot-5, 215-pound three-year lettermen from St. Louis, Missouri, Sneed enters his senior season in 2019-20, ranking 29th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,008 points having seen action in 105 career games with 70 consecutive starts. He needs just 40 rebounds to eclipse 500 for his career and become just the 15th Wildcat with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. He also ranks fourth all-time in steals with 137 as well as in the career Top 10 for 3-point field goals made (157) and attempted (457) while connecting on 34.4 percent.

An All-Big 12 honorable mention selection, Sneed enjoyed a solid junior season in 2018-19, averaging 10.6 points on 39.6 percent shooting (118-of-298), including 34.6 percent (54-of-156) from 3-point range, with 5.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 30.7 minutes per game. He led the Wildcats in rebounds (182) and defensive rebounds (137), while he was second in 3-point field goals made (54) and attempted (156), rebounding (5.5 rpg.) and steals (45). He scored in double figures in 18 games, including a season-tying 19 points in the win at West Virginia.

Sneed is one of nine returning lettermen for a K-State team that has won 25 games in each of the last two seasons for the first time in school history. In addition to fellow senior Makol Mawien (7.0 ppg., 4.9 rpg.), the Wildcats also return rising juniors Cartier Diarra (6.8 ppg., 3.3 rpg.), Mike McGuirl (3.6 ppg., 1.5 rpg.) and Levi Stockard III (1.8 ppg., 1.5 rpg.) as well as a highly-regarded signing class that includes a trio of Top 200 high school players in DaJuan Gordon, Antonio Gordon and Montavious Murphy and NJCAA All-American David Sloan.
