HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Salina Central edged the Salthawk soccer team 2-1 in a hard fought game at the Salthawk Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

PRATT, Kan. – Central Kansas League Girl’s Tennis took place in Pratt on Tuesday. Halle Krehbiel of Hesston defeated Lena Rauchholtz of Smokey Valley 6-4, 6-0 to capture the #1 Singles bracket. Gracie Dawes of Hesston won out over Issabella Wright of Smokey Valley 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 for the #2 Singles Championship.

In doubles competition, it was Unruh/Martin of Hesston defeating Yenni/Elliott of Smokey Valley 6-2, 7-5.  Doubles #2 Championship whent to Martin/Boles of Hesston over McMillan/Jones of Smokey Valley.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina pushed the St. Louis Cardinals to a deciding Game 5 of the NL Division Series, poking a tying single in the eighth inning and lifting a sacrifice fly in the 10th to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4. Molina slung his bat far into the outfield after his winner, and the packed crowd at Busch Stadium roared. Game 5 will be Wednesday back in Atlanta. The Cardinals will have ace Jack Flaherty on the mound, and the Braves will go with Mike Foltynewicz.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs did to themselves Sunday night what rivals have been trying to do for the better part of two years: They slowed themselves down. In what became a 19-13 loss to the Colts, the Chiefs committed 11 penalties for a whopping 125 yards to spoil a nip-and-tuck game that wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter. Next up is red-hot Houston, fresh off a 53-32 romp over the Falcons.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas freshman Roschon Johnson has gone from an emergency option in the offense to the team’s most reliable tailback. Johnson was recruited as a quarterback and was No. 3 on the depth chart when he moved to running back because the position was decimated by injuries. He’d shown flashes of promise early, then broke out with 121 yards on 21 carries last week in a win at West Virginia. He says his plan is to eventually return to quarterback. No. 11 Texas plays No. 6 Oklahoma in Dallas on Saturday.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — A year ago, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops brought a shaky defense into the rivalry game with Texas. He was fired the day after a 48-45 loss to the Longhorns. This year, things appear to have changed under new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. The Sooners are allowing just 19 points per game and have held their past four opponents to 20 or fewer points heading into the annual showdown with Texas.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer has been cleared to play for the No. 22 Bears. While Brewer is good after taking a hard hit in a win at Kansas State, starting left tackle Connor Galvin will be out 4-6 weeks after getting injured early in that game. Baylor is 5-0 this season and ranked for the first time. The Bears play Texas Tech on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The New York Yankees have completed a playoff sweep of the Minnesota Twins and will advance to AL Championship Series. Gleyber Torres got New York going with a second-inning home run and scored on each of his two doubles, giving Luis Severino sufficient support and fueling the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over Minnesota.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Max Scherzer’s season-saving, seven-inning pitching performance and Ryan Zimmerman’s three-run homer lifted the wild-card Washington Nationals to a 6-1 victory over the league-best Los Angeles Dodgers to force a deciding Game 5 in their NL Division Series. They will face off on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The Tampa Bay Rays cut their AL Division Series deficit to 2-1 with 10-3 romp over the Houston Astros. Former Astros hurler Charlie Morton allowed one run and three hits while striking out nine over five innings. Astros manager AJ Hinch announced after the game that Houston will start Justin Verlander on three days of rest in Game 4 of the best-of-five matchup at Tropicana Field on Tuesday. Tampa Bay will use Diego Castillo as an opener.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Matt Breida ran 83 yards for a touchdown on San Francisco’s first play from scrimmage, Baker Mayfield was harassed into his worst game as a pro, and the 49ers stayed unbeaten for their best start in nearly 30 years, beating the Cleveland Browns 31-3 Monday night. San Francisco, now 4-0, joined the 5-0 New England Patriots as the only remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. It’s the first time the 49ers have won their first four games since 1990.

A look at what’s happening around the majors today:

RESTED ENOUGH

Justin Verlander will start on three days of rest as the Astros try to put away the Rays in Game 4 of their AL Division Series at Tampa Bay. It will be Verlander’s second career start on short rest — the other came after a one-inning, rain-shortened appearance in the 2011 ALDS. Houston won the first two games of the series with a pair of dominant pitching performances from Verlander and Gerrit Cole, who combined to limit the Rays to one unearned run and five hits over 14 2/3 innings. Houston’s other pitchers have allowed 12 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings, an ERA of 9.53.

“The thought process is five-game series are pretty crazy and we’ve got to win. Never know what can happen,” Verlander said after the Astros’ 10-3 loss in Game 3 on Monday. “You can’t put all your eggs in one basket and say if we lose tomorrow, we’ve got Justin and Gerrit (Cole) for Game 5. It’s a crazy game.”

Tampa Bay will use Diego Castillo as an opener, and manager Kevin Cash said he’ll play matchups with his bullpen after that.

GOING THE DISTANCE

The Nationals and Dodgers get a travel day and go coast to coast again ahead of their win-or-go-home Game 5 in the NL Division Series. Washington will send 18-game winner Stephen Strasburg to the mound against Walker Buehler in a marquee matchup Wednesday at Los Angeles.

“If I could bet, I’d bet on him,” Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton said about Strasburg. “To have him healthy and ready to go in that situation only boosts our confidence.”

Max Scherzer pitched seven masterful innings and Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer Monday night as the wild-card Nationals staved off elimination with a 6-1 victory at home over the Dodgers, tying the best-of-five NLDS at two games apiece.

BIG BIRD

The Cardinals and Braves are off before Wednesday’s decisive Game 5 in Atlanta. Yadier Molina rallied St. Louis in Game 4, poking a tying single in the eighth inning and lifting a sacrifice fly to end it in the 10th. Molina slung his bat far into the outfield after his winning swing, and the crowd at Busch Stadium roared with the longtime heart of the franchise. Molina has 10 tying or go-ahead RBIs in his postseason career, tied with Sandy Alomar, Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench for most by a catcher.

“I like those moments,” Molina said.

St. Louis will have ace Jack Flaherty on the mound Wednesday, and the Braves will go with Mike Foltynewicz.

MOVING ON

After finishing a three-game sweep of the Twins with a 5-1 victory at Minnesota on Monday night, Gleyber Torres and the New York Yankees head home waiting to find out whether they’ll play Houston or Tampa Bay in the AL Championship Series. That best-of-seven playoff begins Saturday, so the AL East champs get four days off to rest up and prepare. If the wild-card Rays come back and upset the Astros, the ALCS would start at Yankee Stadium. If the Astros win the Division Series, the ALCS opens in Houston.

EMPTY SEATS

Three of four playoff games failed to sell out Monday, leaving lots of empty seats at Tampa Bay, St. Louis and Washington. Sub-capacity crowds have become an expectation at Tropicana Field — even in October — but they were more striking elsewhere. The Cardinals, whose fans tout themselves as the best in baseball, hosted the Braves in front of 42,203 supporters, about 2,000 fewer than Busch Stadium’s listed capacity. Meanwhile, entire sections in the upper deck were nearly empty as Max Scherzer pitched for Washington against the Dodgers. Prior to Monday, the only 2019 postseason games that failed to sell out were NLDS Games 1 and 2 at Dodger Stadium. Attendance during the regular season fell 1.7% this year for its fourth straight decline.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Salthawk volleyball player Peyton Allen posted via twitter Monday that she will commit to attend Butler Community College to advance her academic and volleyball career.  Allen has been active in both volleyball and basketball at Hutchinson High School all four years.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Under tough scoring conditions at Dub’s Dread Golf Course, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team leads the six-team field by three strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round.

The No. 4-ranked Blue Dragons shot a 304 in Monday’s only round of the 36-hole tournament. Host Kansas City is second at 307 and Washburn University is third at 308. Rockhurst University shot a 315 to finish the opening round in fourth. Barton shot 325 and is fifth while Bethel College is sixth after a 351 on Monday.

Crockett and Kansas City’s Cam Riley were the only two golfers to shoot even par on Monday and lead’s the individual title chase after opening-round 72s. The Blue Dragons counted scores of 76 by sophomore Nate McCulloch and 78s by sophomore Peyton Austin and freshman Trey McCrae. Freshman Tyler Trudo shot an 83 as the Blue Dragons’ fifth golfer.

McCulloch is fifth after Monday’s round. Austin and McCrae are tied for 13th.

Two Blue Dragon individual players – players who can’t count against Hutch’s team score – are right in the thick of the individual race.

Freshman Kyle Klopper is third overall after a 74 in the opening round. Nolan Sughroue is tied for fifth after carding a 76 on Monday.

The Blue Dragons will tee off between 10 and 10:40 a.m. to close out the tournament on Tuesday.

The Hutchinson Community College football team took a collective sigh of relief on Monday when the latest NJCAA Football Rankings were released.

Hutchinson’s first-ever run at No. 1 ended at five weeks after Saturday’s 29-27 upset loss at No. 20 Highland. The Blue Dragons slipped three spots to No. 4 this week.

The Blue Dragons are 5-1 overall heading into Saturday’s Jayhawk Conference matchup vs. Coffeyville at Gowans Stadium.

The new Top 5 has Mississippi Gulf Coast (6-0) at No. 1. Northwest Mississippi moves from No. 7 to No. 7 with a decisive victory over former No. 3 East Mississippi last Thursday. Lackawanna College is No. 3 at 5-0 and receive one first-place vote. Lackawanna’s lead over Hutchinson for the No. 3 spot is a scant .37 points. Kilgore is No. 5.

Gulf Coast and Northwest Mississippi do not meet in the regular season, but could meet in the Mississippi playoffs.

The Blue Dragons are one of three Jayhawk Conference teams in the Top 10 and five league schools in the Top 20.

Butler drops five spots to No. 9 after a second-straight loss. The Grizzlies were defeated on the road by Independence. Garden City moves up two spots and back into the Top 10 at No. 14. Highland was the big league winner after toppling No. 1 Hutch on Saturday, the Scotties are No. 14 this week, up six spots. Independence returns to the poll this week after hits 49-20 win over then-No. 4 Butler. The Pirates are No. 17. Fort Scott and Iowa Western are both receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 17 consecutive polls.
