NEWTON, Kan. – The Andale Varsity Volleyball team won pool A of the Newton Railers Varsity Volleyball tournament over the weekend and went on to win matches in bracket play over the pool B Runner-up Nickerson Panthers in match #1 27-25, 25-15, 25-13.  Andale then won over McPherson 20-25, 25-23, 25-11 in the Championship match.

McPherson went 4-0 in pool play to be seeded against Goddard Eisenhower in the 2nd match of bracket play.  Mac defeated Eisenhower 25-17, 24-26, 25-22.

McPherson finished 2nd, Goddard Eisenhower 3rd, Nickerson 4th, with host Newton finishing in 5th place.

Buhler Varsity Volleyball went 1-3 in pool play and finished 7th with a win over Andover Central 28-26, 25-20.  Kingman finished in 9th place with a match over Wichita Heights

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL Central on the final day of the regular season, using Jack Flaherty’s arm and Matt Carpenter’s bat to win their first division title since 2015 with a 9-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs lost on Joe Maddon’s day as their manager. It was announced before the game that he won’t return next year. St. Louis starts the NL Division Series beginning Thursday at Atlanta. Second-place Milwaukee plays at Washington in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night.

DETROIT (AP) — Darrel Williams ran for a go-ahead, 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left for his second score in the fourth quarter to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 34-30 win over the Detroit Lions. Detroit drove to the Kanas City 44 on the final drive and Matthew Stafford heaved two passes toward the end zone that were incomplete. The Chiefs went ahead for the first time early in the third quarter when Bashaud Breeland recovered Kerryon Johnson’s fumble and returned it 100 yards.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jorge Soler locked up the AL home run crown with his 48th homer, Brett Phillips drove a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in manager Ned Yost’s final game. Phillips’ first career walk-off RBI gave Yost a celebratory send-off on the final day of the regular season. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli turned over coaching duties to infielder Ehire Adrianza.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Dairon Asprilla converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute to give Portland a contentious 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City, keeping the Timbers in line for a playoff spot. Asprilla was given the opportunity for his first goal after Ilie Sanchez fouled Jeremy Ebobisse in the penalty area.

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard turned in his third 200-yard game, running for 296 yards against Kansas State in the top rushing performance of the season. The sophomore from Canada has 938 rushing yards. That’s the third-best five-game total to open a season since 2010. All three quarterbacks who passed for 400 yards over the weekend were on Alabama’s roster last year. SMU smashed its school record with 10 sacks against South Florida.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor has extended football coach Matt Rhule’s contract through the 2027 season. The announcement came less than 24 hours after the Bears improved to 4-0 with a 23-21 victory against Iowa State on Saturday.

Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, replacing preseason No. 1 Clemson after the Tigers had a close call.

Alabama received 29 of 61 first-place votes Sunday from the media panel as the Tigers’ one-point victory at North Carolina gave the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank the first shake-up at the top this season. Clemson slipped to No. 2 and received 18 first-place votes.

The last time a No. 1 team won and dropped was Ohio State on Nov. 7, 2015, after the Buckeyes beat Minnesota 28-14 at home. The No. 1 team has won and dropped in the rankings 90 times since the AP poll started in 1936, including four times when there was a tie for No. 1.

No. 3 Georgia received four first-place votes. Ohio State moved up to No. 4 and received seven first-place votes. LSU was No. 5 and Oklahoma sixth. No. 7 Auburn received three first-place votes.

The last time five or more teams received first-place votes during the regular season was Nov. 1, 2015: No. 1 Ohio State (39); No. 2. Baylor (six); No. 3. Clemson (six); No. 4. LSU (five); No. 5. TCU (four); and No. 7. Alabama (one).

At the other end of the rankings, No. 24 SMU is ranked for the first time since the program received the so-called death penalty for NCAA rules violations in 1987 and did not compete for two seasons.

POLL POINTS

Alabama has now been ranked No. 1 at some point in each of the last 12 seasons, extending its own record. The second-longest streak belongs to Miami, which had a string of seven consecutive seasons with an appearance at No. 1 from 1986-92.

This is the 119th time Alabama has been No. 1, most of any school in poll history, and the 88th time it has been top-ranked under coach Nick Saban since he took over in 2007. Only Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Southern California have more total appearances at No. 1 than Alabama has under Saban.

PONY UP

SMU’s appearance in the rankings is historic, considering where that program has been. After returning from the death penalty in 1989, the Mustangs managed one winning season (6-5 in 1997) over the next 20 years.

The program had an uptick under June Jones from 2009-12, going to four straight bowl games and topping out at eight victories. There has been only one winning season since. Under second-year coach Sonny Dykes, the Mustangs are playing their best ball since the Pony Express days of Eric Dickerson and Craig James in the early 1980s.

“Given our history, SMU’s history, being a very successful program for a long time like it was in the ’70s and ’80s, and then obviously having the death penalty, it’s just been a long climb back,” Dykes told the AP on Sunday. “I think it probably means more to our fanbase and the SMU people than it does to others because it has been a long climb back. I think it gives our program some credibility.”

SMU is not a national championship contender like it was back in its hey-day, but the Mustangs head into the second month of the season looking like a team that should push for an American Athletic Conference crown. An influx of transfers, including quarterback Shane Buechele from Texas and linebacker and leading tackler Richard McBryde from Auburn.

Dykes said SMU has 65 new players, including scholarship freshman, walk-ons and transfers.

“When you have an influx of that many new people, it can mess your culture up a little bit,” Dykes said. “That’s what I worried about a little bit.”

Things have clicked. The Mustangs (5-0) are off to their best overall start since 1983, are 3-0 on the road and 10-4 in their last 14 games overall.

— No. 22 Wake Forest also ended a long run of being outside the rankings. The Demon Deacons (5-0) of the Atlantic Coast Conference are ranked for the first time since Oct. 18, 2008. Wake’s Top 25 drought was the third-longest among Power Five schools, behind Indiana (last ranked in 1994) and Purdue (2007).

The next three longest streaks of being unranked among Power Five conference teams are Kansas (2009), Illinois (2011) and Rutgers (2012).

— No. 20 Arizona State retuned to the rankings after beating California at home on Friday.

— No. 21 Oklahoma State is ranked for the first time since the final poll of 2017.

OUT

— Cal took a big tumble, from No. 15 to out of the rankings after its first loss.

DETROIT, Michigan – The Chiefs hold on to rally and win in Detroit 34-30 scoring with 20 seconds to play in regulation.

DETROIT (AP) — Patrick Mahomes made more plays than usual with his legs because the Detroit Lions set up their defense to limit what the superstar quarterback could do with his arm.

Mahomes converted a fourth down with a run to extend a game-winning drive that ended with Darrel Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds left for his second score in the fourth quarter, lifting the Kansas City Chiefs to a 34-30 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

“With what they were doing, there were lanes to run,” Mahomes said. “I saw a lane and I took it.”

The reigning MVP had thrown at least two touchdown passes in 14 straight games, one short of the NFL record set by Peyton Manning. And, he was the first player in league history to have at least 350 yards passing and three touchdowns without an interception in three straight games before getting slowed down in Detroit.

“They found a way to take away some of the stuff that we like to do,” said Mahomes, who was 24 of 42 for 315 yards. “They hadn’t lost a game for a reason.”

Kansas City (4-0) stayed undefeated after starting its game-winning drive on the 21 with 2:25 left. Facing fourth-and-8 from the Chiefs 34, Mahomes dropped back briefly before busting through a hole up the middle for 15 yards to help him finish with a career-high 56 yards rushing.

“When they start doubling people, there are going to be some lanes and he knew that,” coach Andy Reid said.

The Lions (2-1-1) were determined to take away big plays in Kansas City’s passing game, doubling tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Sammy Watkins with some success. The scheme, though, cleared space for Mahomes to run and coach Matt Patricia doesn’t regret it.

“If he goes back there and throws it vertical with some of the speed that he has, then I’m not going to be happy,” he said.

The plan almost worked.

Kansas City went ahead for the first time early in the third quarter when Bashaud Breeland recovered Kerryon Johnson’s fumble and returned it 100 yards, taking advantage of everyone on the field appearing to stop momentarily and the officials not blowing a whistle. The pivotal play stood after review.

“We preach that every day,” Breeland said. “You pick up the ball at the end, whether it’s alive or dead. You never know.”

The Lions scored the first 10 points and after Kansas City pulled into two ties, they went back ahead late in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Stafford threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay with 2:26 left to give Detroit a 30-27 lead. The call on the field stood after a review, which showed Golladay got both feet in the end zone. Golladay had a touchdown overturned by review early in the third because it was ruled he did not maintain control of the ball throughout the process of the catch.

Stafford was 21 of 34 for 291 yards with three touchdowns, including two to Golladay and one to T.J. Hockenson. Stafford’s second touchdown pass of the game — and first to Golladay — put Detroit up 23-20 and followed a fifth fumble in the third quarter.

“There were a bunch of great plays made in this game, a couple bad plays by each team made in this game,” Stafford said. “That’s the way it goes in the NFL. It came down to the last 15 seconds. They were undefeated coming into this game. So were we. Somebody was going to have to lose

“It was a good opportunity to beat a good team, and we were darn close.”

WHAT A PLAY

Mahomes opened the fourth with a 10-yard pass to Kelce, who pitched a lateral to LeSean McCoy and he picked up another 23 yards on a play that wasn’t planned.

HOT POTATO

The Chiefs lost three fumbles and Detroit gave it back twice with fumbles in the third quarter, combining for the most fumbles lost in a game since 2014. The Chiefs opened the second half with Mecole Hardman fumbling on the kickoff return. Stafford fumbled on the Kansas City 6 on the ensuing possession and Johnson fumbled into the end zone on Detroit’s next drive. Williams and Watkins also lost a fumble in the quarter.

BY THE NUMBERS

Chiefs: McCoy had a 39-yard run and finished with 56 yards rushing and a TD that pulled Kansas City into a 10-all tie in the second quarter. Kelce had seven receptions for a season-low 85 yards. Watkins had a season-low three receptions for 54 yards.

Lions: Johnson had 26 carries for 125 yards, 1 yard short of his total through three games. Golladay caught five passes for 67 yards and matched a career high with two touchdowns.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals put a memorable finish on a forgettable 2019 season.

Jorge Soler locked up the AL home run crown with his 48th, Brett Phillips drove a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and Kansas City beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in manager Ned Yost’s final game.

“I’m sure everyone in the field in the top of the ninth was like, ‘Give me that at-bat.’ I know that’s what was going through my head,” Phillips said.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli turned over coaching duties to infielder Ehire Adrianza, and AL Central-winning Minnesota hit three homers to push its major league record to 307 this season — one ahead of the New York Yankees. Minnesota finished the season 101-61, one victory shy of the franchise record set in 1965.

“I don’t think anybody will ever forget the ‘Bomba Squad,’” Baldelli said.

Soler connected in the first inning, becoming the first Royal to lead the AL in home runs and surpassing Rafael Palmeiro for the most long balls by a Cuban-born player. The 27-year-old’s previous career high was 12.

But the Royals also lost 100-plus games for the second straight season, finishing only two games better than last year at 59-103. Yost said he won’t miss much about the game.

“There’s not one part of me that wants to continue doing this,” he said. “I’ve done my part. I want to go spend time with my family, especially my wife. We’ve been apart for six or seven months a year, for the most part. We’re both healthy and we want to go do some things together.

“I’m very confident in my part in helping this team get back into fait condition. I’m walking out the door feeling good with no regrets.”

Ian Kennedy (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth before the Royals rallied against rookie Brusdar Graterol (1-1). Humberto Arteaga led off with a double, and Nick Dini moved him to third with a bloop single, setting up Phillips’ fly to right that lifted the Royals to 59-103.

Kansas City’s Hunter Dozier led off the eighth with his 10th triple of the season, matching teammates Whit Merrifield and Adalberto Mondesi for the AL lead. It marks the first time since 1984 (Astros) that a team has had three players with at least 10 triples. Dozier scored on Ryan O’Hearn’s tying double.

Baldelli tabbed Adrianza to lead because he thinks he has the makings of a future manager. Adrianza filled out the lineup card and called the shots during the game.

“It’s kind of cool, A.D.’s first game managing on the same day that a very great and memorable manager on the other side is managing his last day,” Baldelli said. “Going out to home plate was actually pretty nice, too. Ned mentioned that he’s only gone out to home plate a few times over the course of his tenure. And I was very happy to be out there with him on his last day.”

The Twins scored three runs in the first on back-to-back home runs by C.J. Cron —a two-run shot — and Jake Cave. It’s the 12th time this season the Twins have homered back-to-back. Jason Castro added a solo shot in the fifth.

The Royals drew 17,875 in their final game. They finished with an average of 18,267 fans, 2,290 fewer than 2018.

Whit Merrifield became the second right-handed hitter to lead the majors in hits in back-to-back years (Kirby Puckett, 1988-89).

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins Minnesota is uncertain if rookie 3B Luis Arraez will be ready for the AL Division Series after spraining his right ankle Saturday. “It could be a few days, it could be a week,” said head athletic trainer Tony Leo. “We’re not really putting a timeline on this one, obviously, with where we are.” Arraez is hitting .334 in 92 games.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Chuba Hubbard ran for 296 yards and a touchdown on just 25 carries, and Oklahoma State shut down No. 24 Kansas State’s own vaunted rushing attack in a weather-delayed 26-13 victory Saturday night. Hubbard finished with runs of 53, 84 and 44 yards in his dominant performance. Skylar Thompson was 11 of 23 for 118 yards for the Wildcats, who were coming off a bye following their big win at Mississippi State.

WACO, Texas (AP) — John Mayers kicked a 38-yarder with 21 seconds left for the first field goal of the redshirt freshman’s career, lifting Baylor to a 23-21 victory over Iowa State after the Bears blew a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. The win in the Big 12 opener for both teams was the second in a row for the Bears. They won their sixth straight game going back to last season. The Cyclones lost their conference opener for the 16th time in 18 seasons.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Freshman Max Duggan led touchdown drives on all three of his first-half possessions as TCU scored on every first-half possession and was never threatened in a 51-14 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play. TCU (3-1, 1-0) dominated in every area of the first half against Kansas (2-3, 0-2), which ended a 48-game road losing streak to Power 5 opponents earlier this season at Boston College.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Jalen Hurts passed for 413 yards and three touchdowns as No. 6 Oklahoma rolled past Texas Tech 55-16. Hurts also ran for 70 yards and another score for the 4-0 Sooners. His 483 yards of total offense ranks eighth in Oklahoma history. It was the first 400-yard passing game for the senior transfer from Alabama. The Sooners, who entered the game leading the nation in total offense, gained 642 yards. They have totaled at least 600 yards in each game this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins lost third baseman Luis Arraez to an apparent right leg injury in the seventh inning of their 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Arraez collided with first baseman Willians Astudillo while he was chasing Hunter Dozier’s pop fly at the mound. Astudillo caught the ball and Arraez grabbed the back of his right leg as he tumbled to the ground.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ Top-ranked Clemson barely picked up its 20th consecutive win by stopping North Carolina’s two-point conversion attempt with 1:17 remaining in a 21-20 victory over the Tar Heels. The game was tied at 14 until Trevor Lawrence hit Tee Higgins on a 38-yard touchdown pass with 9:54 left. The Tar Heels responded with a short scoring run by Javonte Williams to get within one, but James Skalski and Nolan Turner combined to bring down Sam Howell as he turned toward the goal line on the conversion attempt.

UNDATED (AP) _ Tua Tagovailoa and DeVonta Smith hooked up for five touchdown passes in second-ranked Alabama’s 59-31 rout of Mississippi. Justin Fields threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as No. 5 Ohio State posted its most impressive win of the season, 48-7 at Nebraska.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Cornerback Jalen Ramsey has rejoined the Jacksonville Jaguars following the birth of his second child. Ramsey flew with the team to Denver after returning from Nashville. Ramsey remains questionable to play against the winless Broncos because of a back injury that kept him out of practice earlier in the week. The team expects Ramsey to test his back in pregame warmups before a decision is made about his availability.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Coleman has won the gold medal in the men’s 100 meters at the world track championships, three weeks after avoiding a ban for missed drug tests. Coleman started well and extended his lead down the stretch to win in 9.76 seconds, beating defending champion Justin Gatlin, who finished second in the centerpiece race. Andre de Grasse of Canada was third.
