LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self has extended a scholarship offer to Marial Mading, a 6-foot-10, 195-pound freshman forward from Chipola Junior College, reported from sources outside of Kansas Basketball.
Mading, who has heard from KU, Florida and others, will attend the Oct. 4 Late Night in the Phog as part of an unofficial visit.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State rolled past Nicholls to begin Chris Klieman’s tenure with the Wildcats in style, then trounced Bowling Green last weekend to keep the momentum going.
Time for the first big test of the season.
The Wildcats head to Mississippi State for a Big 12-SEC showdown on Saturday.
“Wouldn’t it be fun if we didn’t face any adversity the whole year? Yeah, that would be great,” Klieman said with a grin. “We know there’s going to be adversity and probably going to be adversity this week. There’s so many guys that have played in big games that I’m counting those guys to rise up, and more importantly challenging those guys who have not played at this level yet.
“It’s no different than us going at each other on Wednesday in August, when tempers are flaring and we are going ones-versus-ones,” Klieman continued. “It’ll be a different atmosphere for sure, but that’s the competitive spirit and excitement you want.”
Want it or not, Klieman and his bunch are about to get it.
They’re not alone, either.
All four new coaches in the Big 12 have a chance to make a statement this weekend, beginning with Kansas, which tries to bounce back from a stunning home loss to Coastal Carolina with a trip to Boston College on Friday night. West Virginia likewise faces an ACC foe in North Carolina State on Saturday, while Texas Tech gets a Big 12-Pac 12 matchup at Arizona.
“Certainly, Saturday night will be our biggest challenge,” said Red Raiders coach Matt Wells, whose team has romped past Montana State and UTEP to open the season. “I look forward to watching our guys handle some adversity, and how that plays out after that, we’ll all see together.”
Wells and the rest of the league will see.
The rest of the nation, too.
It’s a big weekend for the Big 12 as a whole. Iowa State is gearing up for a visit from No. 19 Iowa, its biggest rival, while TCU heads to Purdue for a Big 12-Big Ten game and fifth-ranked Oklahoma heads to UCLA for another game against the Pac-12, albeit against a rebuilding program.
But the brightest spotlight might well be on the Big 12′s new coaches.
Klieman and Wells are off to unbeaten starts, and their teams have hardly been challenged by a combined four lower-tier opponents. But that also means the Wildcats and Red Raiders face the biggest step up in competition, and for Kansas State a chance to avenge a loss to the Bulldogs last year.
“The first two weeks, I think the reason we’ve had success is we haven’t looked ahead,” Klieman said. “We’ve stayed on task over the course of each day in our preparation. That’s what we’re trying to build here. We talk about stacking great days, and that’s what we have to do to be successful.”
It’s a similar message that Wells is preaching in his first road game with Texas Tech, which has dominated Arizona in the past but hasn’t faced the Wildcats since 1989.
“I think the biggest thing for our players and young kids in general is try to keep it as the same and as routine as you can, even though you’re in a different environment,” Wells said. “It’s a different stadium and the colors are different and it’s not your own locker room and you understand that, but you try to do things to get them comfortable with it as soon as you can.”
The Jayhawks will be hitting the road for the first time under Les Miles, too — not that playing at Memorial Stadium did them any good. They lost to 12-7 to Coastal Carolina last week. Boston College has beaten Virginia Tech and Richmond to start its season.
Then there’s West Virginia, which flopped in its first road game with Neal Brown on the sideline. The Mountaineers barely gained positive yardage on the ground, gave up huge plays on defense and never put up much of a fight in a 38-7 throttling by Missouri.
The Mountaineers, who were fortunate to hold off James Madison in their opener, now return home to face a Wolfpack team that has outscored East Carolina and Western Carolina by a combined 75-6.
“I think this is our first real test — the first real adversity — this football team has had and how do we handle it? How do we respond?” Brown asked. “I think this week will be a good indication of where we’re at as far as being able to respond to things that don’t necessarily go our way.
“Growth occurs in failure and we failed on Saturday,” he said, “so it’s time to get better.”

DENVER (AP) — Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong opened the game with successive home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals connected five times in all to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3. Marcell Ozuna, Rangel Ravelo and Harrison Bader also homered for St. Louis, which holds a four-game lead over Chicago and Milwaukee atop the NL Central. Held to a total of two runs in losing the first two games of the series at Coors Field, the Cardinals quickly bounced back. Fowler homered on the first pitch of the game.
CHICAGO (AP) — Hunter Dozier hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run in the sixth, Jorge Soler had his third homer in two days and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3. Whit Merrifield walked and Soler singled off Chicago starter Lucas Giolito in the decisive inning. Then Dozier drove a 1-2 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a 5-2 lead. The homers spoiled a record performance by Giolito, who set a team mark with eight consecutive strikeouts.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — When AFC West rivals Kansas City and Oakland meet both teams will be without the receivers they thought would be major parts of their offense. Tyreek Hill of the Chiefs got injured in Week 1, while the Raiders released Antonio Brown two days before their opener. Sammy Watkins stepped up last week for Kansas City. Oakland got big contributions from Tyrell Williams and Darren Waller.

UNDATED (AP) _ Yu Darvish struck out a season-high 14 and allowed only two hits over six shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs downed the Padres, 4-1 in San Diego to remain tied with Milwaukee for the second NL wild card. Ian Happ had two of the Cubs’ eight hits, including a two-run single that put Chicago ahead, 4-0 in the fourth. Ryan Braun hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the third inning to help the Brewers earn their seventh consecutive win, 3-2 at Miami.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Atlanta’s lead in the NL East is down to eight games over Washington after Philadelphia belted four home runs in a 9-5 win versus the Braves. Cesar Hernandez, J.T. Realmuto, Jean Segura and Adam Haseley provided the longballs as the Phils gained a split of the four-game set and stayed two games out of a playoff berth. Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his 39th homer for the Braves.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ The Washington Nationals solidified their hold on the first NL wild card as Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto each homered and drove in three runs in a 12-6 pounding of the Minnesota Twins. Adam Eaton and Yan Gomes also homered and Asdrúbal Cabrera added a pair of run-scoring hits for the Nats. Nelson Cruz homered for Minnesota, which saw its lead in the AL Central cut to 3 ½ games over idle Cleveland.
HOUSTON (AP) _ Matt Olson hit a two-run homer while the Oakland Athletics were scoring three times off Justin Verlander over the first three innings of a 3-2 win at Houston. Homer Bailey yielded three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings to help the A’s take a half-game lead over Tampa Bay for the first AL wild card. Oakland won the last three games of the series after the AL West leaders rolled to a 15-0 rout in the opener.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State saw its 12-game win streak in regular season home games snapped on Thursday night (Sept. 12) at the hands of Missouri Western. The Griffons knocked off the No. 25/22 ranked Tigers by a score of 28-17, moving to 1-1 on the season. The Tigers dropped to 0-2 overall.
Fort Hays State took an early lead by scoring on its first drive of the game. Unfortunately they had to settle for three points after pushing the ball to the MWSU 2-yardline. A false start pushed the Tigers back five yards and three plays later had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from Dante Brown. It was the only scoring by either team in the opening quarter.
Dante Brown looked to extend the Tiger lead early in the second quarter, but missed a 49-yard field goal attempt. From that point, Missouri Western started to find rhythm. Wyatt Steigerwald hushed the Tiger crowd with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Damen Wheeler, Jr. at the 12:36 mark, giving Missouri Western the lead 7-3.
The momentum fully shifted to Missouri Western when a muffed punt by FHSU turned into a short field to work with at the FHSU 20-yardline. The Griffons only needed one play to reach the endzone, a 20-yard pass from Steigerwald to Kyle Berry to push their lead to 14-3 with 8:29 to go in the second quarter. Fort Hays State could not counter with any offense and Missouri Western marched 62 yards in seven plays for yet another touchdown, a 12-yard run by Shamar Griffith at the 4:07 mark. That allowed Missouri Western to take a 21-3 lead into halftime.
The Tigers could not advance the ball past midfield on their first two drives of the second half. They finally found success on their third drive, advancing the ball to the MWSU 24-yardline, but DJ Stirgus of MWSU intercepted a Fuller pass at the goal line. Another quarter went by with no points for the Tigers.
FHSU showed a brief sign of life with 8:24 to go in the game when Fuller found Manny Ramsey for a 28-yard touchdown pass. However, the two-point conversion failed and the Griffons led 21-9.
A bad snap when the Tigers were looking to punt with 5:33 remaining in the game proved to be the nail in the coffin. Missouri Western got the ball back at the FHSU 26. The Griffons capitalized four plays later on a Markel Smith 6-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 28-9.
The Tigers picked up one more touchdown late on a four-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Hunter Budke, but it was too-little, too-late. The Tigers tacked on a two-point conversion to make the final score of 28-17.
Fuller threw for 333 yards for a second straight week, completing 23-of-49 attempts. Ramsey and Harley Hazlett each had five receptions, Ramsey finishing with 102 yards and Hazlett with 90. The Tigers struggled to establish a run game all night as Charles Tigner led the team with 44 rushing yards. Hayden Kreutzer led the Tiger tackling effort with nine, followed by Kolt Trachsel with eight.
Steigerwald had 197 passing yards for the Griffons, completing 17-of-29 attempts. Smith ran for a team-high 84 yards and Devon Holmes had seven catches for 70 yards. Evan Chohon led the Griffons on defense with 10 tackles, while Stirgus and Sam Webb each had three pass breakups among the team’s total of 11.
This was the first home loss for the Tigers in the regular season since the 2016 season, when they fell 28-7 to a then No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State team that went on to win the national title.
Fort Hays State heads on the road next week to Washburn University on Saturday (Sept. 21). Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has claimed left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario off outright waivers from the Chicago Cubs.
He will report to the Major League club. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club has recalled infielder Kelvin Gutierrez and placed him on the 60-day Injured List with a right toe fracture.
Rosario, 25, made 13 relief appearances with the Cubs this season, going 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA (7 ER in 10.2 IP) through three big league stints. He was also 1-2 with four saves and a 3.11 ERA (13 ER in 37.2 IP) in 31 outings with Iowa (AAA) this season.
He was designated for assignment by Chicago on Monday.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Making an impact both on and off the field, Kansas State senior safety Denzel Goolsby is one of 22 student-athletes nationally, including 11 from FBS institutions, named to the 2019 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance Company and the AFCA announced Thursday.
The award recognizes players that stood out for their leadership in local communities and overall commitment to giving back.
A Wichita, Kan., native, Goolsby is the fourth Wildcat all-time and second in as many years to be named to the team. He joins offensive lineman Dalton Risner (2018), current K-State quarterbacks coach Collin Klein (2012) and fullback Victor Mann (2005) as former K-State recipients of the award.
Goolsby’s drive to impact others has been molded by his upbringing and the need for him to grow up fast. His biggest off-field initiative is Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Manhattan, which he has worked with since March of 2016 when he was paired with a little named Shannon. Goolsby has also given countless tours of the football complex, most notably as a fundraiser for Jamie’s Wish Foundation, which raises money for cancer patients.
Goolsby regularly visits Meadowlark Hills Retirement Home in Manhattan in addition to Avita Senior Living in Wichita, the latter in which he became friends with a woman named Aileen. He started visiting Aileen in high school and would continue to do so when he went back home.
Other service projects Goolsby has been involved with include mentoring several underprivileged children in the Manhattan area; visits to elementary schools; visits to Denver to speak to his sister’s underprivileged students; and service as a volunteer speaker at Rock Hill Church in Manhattan.
“I’ve had the privilege of not only being a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, but also witnessing firsthand how these young men are able to inspire and ultimately change the lives of those around them,” said Tim Tebow, two-time national champion quarterback at Florida and on the panel of judges for the AFCA Good Works Team. “Each year, I’m impressed by the way that Allstate and the AFCA share the important stories of these players’ ‘good works,’ and I’m honored to be part of such a special program that has become a source of inspiration in the college football community.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior safety Bryce Torneden joined an elite group of college football players as he was named to the 2019 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team Thursday.
Torneden is the first Kansas player to earn a spot on the prestigious team since Darrell Stuckey in 2009 and just the fourth Jayhawk in program history as Chip Hilleary (1992) and Steve Bratton (1998) round out KU’s previous honorees.
Allstate and the AFCA selected 22 student-athletes and one honorary coach for the team. Narrowed from a list of 137 nominees by an esteemed panel of judges, including Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN) and Tim Tebow (Florida, 2009 team), Torneden and the other players stood out for their leadership in local communities and overall commitment to giving back.
Torneden has participated in numerous community service initiatives with a focus on impacting the community he calls home, Lawrence. He has spent countless hours visiting local elementary schools and doing his best to impact the next generation of children.
The work Torneden is proudest of is his role with Team Impact, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes. Torneden is KU football’s leadership team captain for its relationship with Team Impact. He leads 10 players who determine how the program spends its time with teammate, Tayber Witt, and how they can positively impact his life. Torneden has spent countless hours with Witt on campus, but has also led groups visiting him at his school and taking him bowling, among other activities.
In addition, because of Torneden’s impressive leadership skills, he was recently selected as one of the Big 12 Conference’s two football players tabbed for the NCAA’s Football Student-Athlete Connection Group.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — When Cam Newton left the shotgun and began creeping toward the line of scrimmage, Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves knew exactly what was coming.
The Bucs sniffed out a fourth-and-1 play from the 2-yard line with Hargreaves shoving Christian McCaffrey out of bounds with 1:22 left to preserve a 20-14 win over the Carolina Panthers and cap off a terrific defensive performance on Thursday night.
Jameis Winston threw for 208 yards and a touchdown, Chris Godwin had 121 yards receiving and a score and Peyton Barber ran for 82 yards, but it was the Bucs defense that won this game. Tampa Bay held the Panthers without a touchdown and limited McCaffrey to 53 total yards to give coach Bruce Arians his first victory with the team.
The goal-line stand, particularly the fourth down play, was just the icing on the cake.
As Newton cleared out of the way, McCaffrey took the direct snap from center, faked a reverse to Curtis Samuel and raced around left end but couldn’t find the edge. He tried to extend the ball, but didn’t pick up the first down as Hargreaves rode him out of bounds.
“You watch any football and you’ve seen it a few times,” Hargreaves said of the play. “Once I saw Cam walk up to the line of scrimmage and act like he was talking to me I had a pretty good idea what was going on.”
It would be hard to imagine the Panthers taking the ball out of their 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback’s hands in the past. Even Hargreaves said a few years ago, Newton “definitely, 100 percent” would have tried to run and score.
But this is a different time for the ninth-year quarterback. Although he has more TDs rushing than any other QB in the league, he has just minus-2 yards on five carries this season with two fumbles .
“He can’t take them hits like that,” Hargreaves said. “It’s going to eat his body up. So not really. We expected more throwing as he is getting older in his career.”
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said there is nothing wrong with Newton’s shoulder or foot that prevented him from running the ball. He believed the Panthers had the right play called.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t work,” Rivera said. “That’s all I can tell. We felt good about the play.”
McCaffrey said it was his job to get into the end zone — or at least pick up the first down — and he failed.
“The ball is in my hands and I have to make that play,” McCaffrey said. “I have to get better.”
Actually the entire Panthers offense needs to get better, Newton said.
“It’s hard to look defensive guys in the eyes after a game like this because we didn’t uphold our end of the bargain,” Newton said. “All fingers are pointed back to the offense and me specifically.”
Newton finished with 324 yards passing , but was held without a touchdown for the second straight week.
The Buccaneers (1-1) got plenty of pressure on Newton with three sacks coming from Shaquil Barrett. The Panthers failed to reach the end zone, only scoring on Joey Slye’s four field goals and a safety by Luke Kuechly . They are 0-2 for the first time since the 2013 season.
Newton said it’s embarrassing being booed off the field on some third downs. He said you can’t blame the fans and “they deserve better.”
WINSTON AVOIDS TURNOVERS
After throwing two pick 6′s last week, Winston played a turnover-free game.
And with the defense playing well, that was good enough
“I thought he was outstanding,” Arians said. “He had a hell of a week as far as mentally preparing and getting ready for this ball game. I think that’s the type of game he can play.”
NEWTON THROWS DEEP
After fielding plenty of questions about only attempting only one pass of more than 20 yards downfield in the season opener against the Rams, Newton connected on a 44-yard strike to Curtis Samuel late in the first quarter. It was one of handful of deep balls the quarterback threw.
JEERS TO CHEERS
After fumbling his first two punt return attempts, Ray-Ray McCloud was greeted with sarcastically cheers as he fielded his third punt cleanly. But the jeers quickly turned to cheers when McCloud raced up the middle of the field for a 39-yard return.

Undrafted rookie Joey Slye made all four field goals, including a 54-yarder and is now 6 of 7 on the season in place of the injured Graham Gano.
