Hutchinson Community College freshman Alissa Bautista continued her strong play in the back row as the Blue Dragons opened Jayhawk West play with a sweep of Dodge City last Friday at the Sports Arena.
Bautista was named the Jayhawk West Defensive Player of the Week for her performance last week. She joins a pair of Colby players as Week 2 honorees.
Bautista, a 5-foot-3 defensive specialist/libero from Keahone, HI, played in just one match last week, but tallied 15 digs in the three-set match against the Conquistadors. The also passed 10 balls with one service error.
Bautista is the first Blue Dragon to earn weekly conference honors this season.

Hutchinson Community College freshman forward Samantha Vaughn was named the Jayhawk Conference Women’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week for her four-goal game against Redlands last Friday.
Vaughn shares the weekly honor with Priscila Bonilla of Butler.
Vaughn, a 5-foot-7 freshman forward from Wichita, posted her first career hat trick in a four-goal game against Redlands in the Blue Dragons’ only action of the week. Hutchinson won 13-0.
Vaughn scored two goals in each half, one coming of a corner kick in the first half.
She is the 26th Blue Dragon player to record a four-goal game in program history (the program started in 2005).
Vaughn joins Blue Dragon goalkeeper Chiara Soergel as KJCCC honorees so far this season. Soergel was the Goalkeeper of the Week last week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College quarterback Mark Wright accounted for 354 total yards as No. 5 Hutchinson won its home opener with a 31-21 victory over Independence on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
Wright’s performance netted him Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for Week 2 of the 2019 season.
Wright, a 5-foot-10, 186-pound sophomore quarterback from Douglasville, GA, completed 15 of 27 passes for 194 yards and four touchdowns against Independence.
He also ran for 160 yards on 27 carries, becoming the first Blue Dragon quarterback to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2008.
After Independence pulled within one score twice in the third quarter, Wright calmly guided the Dragons on scoring drives of 74 yards in 13 plays and 75 yards in six plays to maintain the lead.
Wright is the first Blue Dragon to earn Weekly KJCCC honors this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs had one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history last season. Now, with the addition of speedy rookie Mecole Hardman and two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, there is reason to believe they could be even better. The first big test comes Sunday when the Chiefs open the regular season at Jacksonville.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kevin Pillar had four hits, including a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the San Francisco Giants rallied to cool off the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8. Brandon Crawford and Mike Yastrzemski also homered for San Francisco, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Paul Goldschmidt drove in four runs and Paul DeJong homered for St. Louis, which lost for just the fourth time in 18 games. St. Louis remained 2 1/2 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jorge Soler extended his team record with his 40th homer, Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon had three hits each, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4. The Royals are the last team in baseball history to have a player reach 40 home runs in a season. Prior to Tuesday, Mike Moustakas held the club record with 38 in 2017. Jakob Junis gave up four runs and seven hits over seven innings for Kansas City.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — With career highs in catches and yards, reserve wide receiver Tevin Bush gave West Virginia a boost in the season opener and he’ll be looking to make more contributions Saturday at Missouri. A self-described “sparkplug,” Bush had four catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in a 20-13 win over James Madison.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles will start the season on the injury report. The team listed Foles on its initial report with an abdominal oblique injury. But the Jaguars say he’s expected to play in the season opener against Kansas City. Foles had some soreness following training camp.
UNDATED (AP) — Ninth-ranked Texas is hosting its first Top 10 matchup in 11 years when the Longhorns play sixth-ranked LSU. The Big 12’s best game Saturday is the first regular-season meeting for the Longhorns and Tigers since 1954. Just more than nine months ago, Texas capped a 10-win season with a win over SEC runner-up Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The Big 12 is coming off an opening weekend when all 10 teams won.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University of Texas will retire the No. 33 jersey of women’s basketball player Kamie Ethridge, the first time the school has so honored a female athlete. Ethridge was the national player of the year, leading Texas to the 1986 NCAA championship. The Longhorns were the first undefeated women’s champions in NCAA history at 34-0. She remains the school’s career assists leader with 776. Ethridge also won an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. in 1998. She is currently head coach at Washington State.

BOSTON (AP) _ Mookie Betts homered on the first two pitches he saw, collecting four hits and five RBIs in all, and Eduardo Rodriguez allowed just five singles in seven shutout innings to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Joc Pederson hit a leadoff homer and a two-run shot as the Los Angeles Dodgers set a National League record with their 250th long ball this season in beating the Colorado Rockies 7-3 to complete a three-game sweep. Pederson, on a powerful tear at the plate, socked five homers and a double in a string of six at-bats that dated back to Sunday.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Sean Murphy homered for his first hit in his major league debut, Marcus Semien added a two-run shot two batters later and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-0. Murphy drove an 0-1 pitch from Jake Jewell over the right center wall in the fifth inning and replays showed his proud parents cheering and celebrating in the stands.
PHOENIX (AP) _ Arizona Diamondbacks rookie Zac Gallen lost his no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning on a clean single by the San Diego Padres’ Manny Machado. Machado ripped a line drive into right field. The ball was hit so hard, outfielder Jarrod Dyson tried to scoop it up and fire to first base, but he bobbled the transfer and Machado reached easily. Gallen had struck out six, walked one, hit a batter and thrown 88 pitches entering the seventh.
NEW YORK (AP) —Rafael Nadal has reached his 33rd Grand Slam semifinal and prevented Diego Schwartzman from making it to his first. Nadal beat Schwartzman 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in Arthur Ashe Stadium to move a step closer to a fourth U.S. Open championship and 19th major title in all, which would be just one short of Roger Federer’s record. Nadal will meet No. 24 Matteo Berrettini of Italy in the semifinals Friday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal kept pulling away in his U.S. Open quarterfinal, then getting reeled back in by Diego Schwartzman.
In the first set, Nadal led 4-0 before Schwartzman got to 4-all. In the second, Nadal went up 5-1 before Schwartzman made it 5-all.
Took more than two hours just for those two sets. Eventually, both were claimed by Nadal. And so, ultimately, was the match and a berth in a 33rd Grand Slam semifinal for Nadal, who prevented Schwartzman from reaching his first by winning 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 after 12:30 a.m. Thursday in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“Like a lion in the … jungle. He’s big. He’s a fighter. He knows how to play the important moments, every single time,” Schwartzman said. “I’ve played him eight times and every important moment, he played better than me.”
No wonder Nadal is 8-0 against the guy.
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are both out of the bracket, but Nadal is still around, meaning at least one member of the Big Three is in the semis at a 62nd consecutive major tournament. That trio has combined to win the last 11 Slam trophies — and Nadal is going to be heavily favored to make that 12.
None of the other men left has played in a major final, let alone won one. Nadal, though, is closing in on a fourth championship at the U.S. Open and his 19th at all majors, which would move him within only one of Federer’s record for men.
On Friday, Nadal will play No. 24 Matteo Berrettini, a 23-year-old from Rome who is Italy’s first male semifinalist in New York since 1977. Berrettini barely got there, edging No. 13 Gael Monfils 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday.
The other men’s semifinal will be No. 5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia vs. 78th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
In the women’s semifinals Thursday, Serena Williams meets No. 5 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, and No. 13 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland takes on No. 15 Bianca Andreescu of Canada.
Dimitrov won a five-setter Tuesday night against Federer, who was hampered by an issue with his upper back. Medvedev won his quarterfinal in four sets against Stan Wawrinka, who had built a big lead in the fourth round against Djokovic when the defending champion stopped because of pain in his left shoulder.
A year ago, it was Nadal whose body broke down: He retired from his semifinal against runner-up Juan Martin del Potro because of a bad knee.
This time, on a muggy night with the humidity above 50%, the left-hander raised some concern by having a trainer come out to rub a cream into that forearm during a changeover early in the third set. At the next changeover, Nadal flexed his right forearm and was visited again by the trainer, took a salt pill and guzzled some drinks, then shook that arm between points in the following game.
Afterward, Nadal said he had dealt with cramps late in the second set and early in the third.
“And then I took some salt, that’s all, and then it was over. The body is in good shape, I think. Not big problems,” Nadal said. “Just, of course, a little tired. Long day.”
Still, Nadal managed to play his best when it mattered the most against the 20th-seeded Schwartzman, an Argentine serenaded by loud choruses of “Olé! Olé! Olé! Olé!” by an audience that included former San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobili.
Nadal came up with a service break in the last game of each of the opening two sets, then the last one he would need made it 4-2 in the third and he broke yet again to end it.
“I don’t know how,” Schwartzman said, “but this guy is improving every time.”
Now Nadal becomes Berrettini’s problem.
Berrettini describes his mental coach as a big help and a best friend. They’ve been speaking on the phone before and after every match. And they certainly had plenty to chat about when it came to this latest victory.
Berrettini double-faulted away his initial match point and then needed four more to finally put away Monfils after nearly four hours.
“He told me, ‘I need to thank you, because I thought that everyone is born once and dies once. But during that match, I was born and died 15 or 16 times,’” Berrettini said about his conversation with the mental coach he’s worked with for several years. “I collapsed and got back up. I collapsed and got back up. That match point. Those other chances. I was down then I came back. It’s a great source of pride for me.”
In truth, the denouement was hardly a thing of beauty, with both men, clearly spent, fighting themselves and the tension of the moment as much as the guy on the other side of the net.
Monfils finished with 17 double-faults but managed to avoid any throughout the entire, exhausting fifth set until he served at 6-5 — and then he had three in that game, plus another two in the deciding tiebreaker, often doubling over between points to rest and catch his breath.
“A very bad day for me, serving,” Monfils said.
Berrettini acknowledged the obvious afterward, too, saying he felt “a little bit tight.”

It all was a bit of a whir.
“Right now, I don’t remember any points, just the (last) match point, you know?” he said. “I remember also the double-fault; I have to be honest.”

Ian Kennedy pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 30 chances. He blew his first save in 15 chances Tuesday night against Detroit, but he was perfect Wednesday.
Edwin Jackson (3-9) allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings for the Tigers.
Detroit scored three runs in the second inning on four consecutive hits. Christin Stewart led off with a single, Jeimer Candelario doubled and Harold Castro drove in both runners with a double. Castro then scored on a single by Dawel Lugo.
After threatening in the third, the Royals scored twice in the fourth. Dozier and Gordon singled leading off, and Ryan McBroom, who made his major league debut Tuesday, collected his first career RBI with a single that scored Dozier and sent Gordon to third. Gordon then scored on a wild pitch.
The Royals added two more in the fifth. Soler’s blast off the Royals Hall of Fame in left field tied it. Dozier then tripled off the base of the wall in left center and scored on Gordon’s infield hit.
Adalberto Mondesi hit a two-out single in the sixth to make it 5-3.
Miguel Cabrera’s RBI single just inside the line in the eighth cut the lead to one.

Tigers LHP Matthew Boyd (7-10, 4.58 ERA) will get the ball for the final game between the two clubs this season. Boyd is 1-2 with a 6.53 in four starts against Kansas City in 2019. Royals RHP Glenn Sparkman (3-10, 5.86 ERA) has never started against the Tigers, but appeared in relief twice last season, posting a 2.84 ERA.
OMAHA, Neb. — Kansas volleyball won their second-straight match to open up the season on Tuesday night by sweeping the Omaha Mavericks 3-0 inside Baxter Arena.
After going up 2-0 through the first two sets, where the Jayhawks outscored the Mavericks 50-27, Kansas found themselves trailing 12-7 early in the third set. However, Kansas used a 6-1 run to tie it up at 13-13 and carried that momentum into the second half of the set. After a back-and-forth stretch, the Jayhawks pulled out the 25-23 set victory following a service error by the Mavericks.
Kansas was led by freshman Gracie Van Driel who finished with a team-high 13 kills. Junior Sara Nielsen also played a huge role in the Jayhawks success as she finished with a team-best 29 assists on the night.
Next up for Kansas will be the UCF Challenge where the Jayhawks will play three matches in three days (Friday-Sunday) in Orlando, Fla.
