Missouri Western State University hopes to host the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp again next year.
This 10th camp which just concluded saw record numbers of fans turn out.
Missouri Western reports approximately 63,000 fans attended the camp in St. Joseph, shattering the old record of 55,000 set in 2010.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid praises Missouri Western.
“I love what they do for us here,” Reid tells reporters. “I mean it’s phenomenal. All the way from the guys that take care of the field and the security people, the people that cook for us, the people that clean the dorms for us. All the way around, it’s a great atmosphere.”
Reid says Missouri Western and the city of St. Joseph makes the team feel welcome.
“I’m a big fan of Missouri Western State University.”
Reid adds, though, that he doesn’t have anything to do with the “business side” of the Chiefs, where the decision will be made to either return to St. Joseph or hold camp somewhere else.
Whether it is because this could be the last year the Chiefs hold camp in St. Joseph or whether it is because the team came so close to getting to the Super Bowl last year or whether it is because quarterback Patrick Mahomes won the NFL MVP last year, fans came out in droves this year.
It didn’t take long for Missouri Western officials to conclude the crowds would be the biggest ever this year, though they thought that was a remote possibility when the Chiefs came to town for their first practice July 27.
The first weekend attracted 15,000 fans. The crowd grew the next weekend, with 16,000 attending.
Then, there was the huge weekday crowd, when 6,500 showed up for a Wednesday practice, an unheard-of number for a weekday. Of course, that Wednesday the quarterbacks, including NFL MVP Mahomes, signed autographs.

Atlanta also announced that right-handed reliever Wes Parsons was claimed off waivers by Colorado. He was designated for assignment by the Braves last week. In addition, Atlanta optioned right-hander Bryse Wilson to Triple-A Gwinnett and recalled right-hander Jacob Webb.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The struggling Kansas City T-Bones baseball team is being evicted from its stadium in Kansas because of unpaid debts. The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Kansas announced Monday it is ending its management agreement with the T-Bones and has given the team until Sept. 13 to remove all its property from the publicly-owned stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s five-man competition at running back could spill over into the season. The Cyclones’ search to replace departed star David Montgomery has been the dominant story heading into the Aug. 31 opener against Northern Iowa. Senior Sheldon Croney, Jr., junior Kene Nwangwu, sophomore Johnnie Lang and freshmen Jirehl Brock and Breece Hall all competing for playing time.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Fourth-ranked Oklahoma has named Jalen Hurts its starting quarterback for the Sept. 1 season opener against Houston. Hurts played in three national championship games for Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2017 national title. He transferred to Oklahoma in January and won the job over redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler.

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Asdrúbal Cabrera hit the last of Washington’s four home runs and drove in five runs, and three relievers combined for 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball as the Nationals thumped the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-0. Adam Eaton, Matt Adams and Trea Turner also connected for the Nationals, who have scored 79 runs in their last eight games while going 7-1. They’ve scored 43 times in their past three, including a 15-14 loss. Adams added two doubles and had four RBIs.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Tom Murphy homered twice and drove in four runs, Austin Nola also went deep and had three RBIs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the playoff-contending Tampa Bay Rays 9-3. Murphy, who had three hits and a walk, hit a three-run drive in the first inning and added a solo shot in the fifth. Nola had a two-run homer during a four-run second off Rays two-way player Brendan McKay and had an RBI single in the fourth. Marco Gonzales went five innings, giving up three runs and five hits to get the win.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Francisco Mejía moved San Diego closer to the club record for homers with his solo shot off the foul pole, Manny Machado had another big hit off Trevor Bauer, and the Padres held on for a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Kirby Yates escaped a bases-loaded threat in the ninth to save San Diego’s third straight win. The Padres are three homers shy of the club record of 189, set two years ago.
BOSTON (AP) _ Red Sox lefty Chris Sale will not pitch for the rest of the regular season. The announcement deals a blow to the defending World Series champions’ already slim hopes for a repeat. Sale received an injection of platelet-rich plasma but will not undergo Tommy John surgery, which likely would have forced him to miss the 2020 season. Sale is 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA this year, the first of a six-year, $160 million contract.

BALTIMORE — Nicky Lopez and Nick Dini homered on successive pitches in the seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals stretched Baltimore’s latest losing streak to eight games, defeating the Orioles 5-4 Monday night.
Kansas City (45-80) won for only the sixth time in its last 22 games, and Baltimore (39-86) absorbed its 13th loss in 14 games. The only team with fewer wins than these two struggling clubs is Detroit.
Orioles starter John Means (8-9) kept Kansas City hitless until Lopez led off the sixth inning with a single to spark a three-run uprising that wiped out a 1-0 deficit.
It was 3-2 before Lopez hit a drive off Gabriel Ynoa and Dini ended an 0-for-10 run with his first major league homer on his 15th plate appearance.
Jorge Lopez (2-7) allowed one run and two hits over five innings and Ian Kennedy, the last of five Kansas City relievers, gave up a home run to Rio Ruiz in the ninth before recording his 22nd save.
Jonathan Villar also homered for the Orioles, who have endured skids of five games (twice), six games and 10 games this season.

HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
Means and KC’s Bubba Starling, who played together at Gardner-Edgerton High in Kansas, faced each other in the big leagues for the first time. After their senior year, Starling signed with KC as the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft and Means went to college after nixing a chance to sign with Atlanta.
Means got the better of his old friend in the reunion, retiring Starling on a grounder and strikeout.
FORGET NO. 1
Should the Orioles finish with the worst record in the majors, they will again get the No. 1 pick in the draft next June. That has absolutely no bearing on how they play over the final six weeks, manager Brandon Hyde said.
“It’s obviously been a really tough year. We knew that coming in,” Hyde acknowledged. “But we’re not going to stop fighting and competing. If you ask any player in (the clubhouse), they could care less about the No. 1 draft choice. It’s about trying to win every single night. Our coaching staff feels the same way.”

Royals: SS Adalberto Mondesi (shoulder) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. He’s been out since July 17 and has missed 30 games. “We’re in no hurry to rush him back. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The struggling Kansas City T-Bones baseball team is being evicted from its stadium in Kansas because of unpaid debts.
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Kansas announced Monday it is ending its management agreement with the T-Bones and has given the team until Sept. 13 to remove all its property from the publicly-owned stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.
The government said in a news release the T-Bones owed a total of nearly $763,000 in current and past due utility bills, and past due payments for use of the stadium.
The Unified Government said it intends to pursue all remedies to collect the debt.
The T-Bones are part of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball and not affiliated with Major League Baseball. A team official didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior quarterback Skylar Thompson was one of 49 players in the country to be named a candidate for the 2019 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation announced Monday.
Thompson joins a list of the top senior or fourth-year junior quarterbacks who are up for the award. He is the fifth candidate in school history, joining former finalists Chad May (1994) and Michael Bishop (1998), the 2012 Johnny Unitas Gold Arm Award winner and current K-State quarterback coach Collin Klein, in addition to 2014 candidate Jake Waters.
A native of Independence, Missouri, Thompson enters his junior season ranked fifth in school history in career completion percentage (minimum 200 attempts) at 59.45 percent and ninth in career passing efficiency (130.56). He is also 20th in school history in career passing yards at 2,080 as he was just the second player in school history to reach 2,000 career passing yards by the conclusion of his sophomore season.
Last year, Thompson played in 11 games with 10 starts, throwing for 1,391 yards and nine touchdowns on 122-of-208 aim with just four interceptions. He also added 373 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 105 carries to finish the year ranked seventh in the Big 12 in both total offense (160.4 yards per game) and passing efficiency (125.3).
Thompson and the rest of the Wildcats will have a chance to interact with fans and sign autographs this Saturday as the program will hold a “Meet the Cats” autograph session from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., on the concourse of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The West Stadium Center box office and the K-State Super Store will be open for the event.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics will again hold auditions to select National Anthem performers for the 2019 K-State Volleyball season. Auditions will be held in Ahearn Field House from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21 and from 12-3 p.m. on Monday, August 26.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves have claimed outfielder Billy Hamilton off waivers from the Kansas City Royals to bolster their injury-plagued roster.
The 28-year-old Hamilton is a five-time Gold Glove finalist and switch-hitter who gives Atlanta some defensive options and speed off the bench. He played in 93 games for the Royals, hitting .211 with 18 stolen bases.
Hamilton spent six years with the Reds before signing with Kansas City as a free agent for this season.
He is a career .242 hitter with 295 stolen bases, including four straight seasons with more than 50 steals in Cincinnati.
The Braves also announced that right-handed reliever Wes Parsons was claimed off waivers by Colorado. Atlanta designated him for assignment last week.
In addition, Atlanta optioned right-hander Bryse Wilson to Triple-A Gwinnett and recalled right-hander Jacob Webb.
The NL East-leading Braves announced the moves during an off day Monday. They are short-handed because of injuries to outfielders Nick Markakis, Austin Riley and Ender Enciarte, as well as shortstop Dansby Swanson.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Although he stole all the headlines, national championship winning head coach Les Miles is not the only significant change fans can expect this football season.
Under the direction of Director of Athletics Jeff Long and after a thorough review by athletic department staff, there are a long list of changes and improvements that fans can expect to see at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium this fall. A breakdown of the changes is listed below.
Tailgate Guys

“There is a great history of tailgating on Campanile Hill,” said Chris Freet, deputy athletics director at KU, “but in recent history it has been almost exclusively for large groups and corporate outings. We are excit5ed to bring back tailgating offerings to small groups of families and friends in the most picturesque location on campus.”
Rideshare Service
As the demand and usage of rideshare apps like Lyft and Uber has increased, the KU facilities staff has continuously worked on ways to make this process easier on gamedays at Memorial Stadium. The preferred rideshare drop-off point for pre-game traffic is on Memorial Drive at the top of the hill, south of the stadium. A pick-up location outside of the post-game traffic pattern has been established just one block east of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in metered parking on the west side of Indiana Street in conjunction with the HERE Apartment complex.
Improved Parking
Lot 94, located on the east side of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium was recently resurfaced and restriped. The project provides improved ADA accessible parking stalls. Additionally, with the completion of the new Indoor Practice Facility, Williams Education Fund regained more than 180 prime parking spaces on the west side of the stadium, including 14 ADA accessible spots.
New Hawk Walk
The Jayhawks will arrive at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff. They will be dropped off on the southeast corner of the stadium in Lot 94, with Hawk Walk taking place as they walk from their drop off around the south perimeter and into the stadium. Fans can line the walk and greet them as they arrive for the day’s game.
Indoor Practice Facility
The new Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) will be used on game day as a meeting place for larger group events during the 2019 season. Varsity Cheer and Youth Football have already secured pregame events inside the IPF for two of KU’s home games. Varsity Cheer has teamed up with Kansas Athletics to host a performance at halftime of the Oklahoma game on Saturday, Oct. 5, and will use the facility as a rehearsal space before their on-field experience. Youth Football Day will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 prior to the Kansas State game. Both groups will host more than 400 youth prior to each game.
New Team Entrance
The Jayhawks and new head coach Les Miles will take the field for game day in a newly designed team tunnel featuring updated branding and messaging. Pyrotechnics will be included in an effort to enhance the atmosphere in the moments right before kickoff.
Alcohol Sales
This season KU becomes the sixth Big 12 institution to make beer and wine available for purchase.
“In consultation with the University, Kansas Athletics over the last couple of years had introduced the sale of beer and wine at selected venues (baseball, softball and soccer) on a trial basis to help assess the viability of a broader offering of alcoholic beverages,” KU Athletics Director Jeff Long said. “That program has been very successful, and with the support and collaboration of on-campus entities, we are now prepared to expand it. Fans have told us that one of the best ways to enhance their experience at Kansas Athletics events is for them to have the ability to enjoy beer and wine, and we are pleased to provide this opportunity.”
As part of the new program, Kansas Athletics is instituting a “No Re-Entry/No Pass” policy that will be strictly enforced at the stadium. In addition, alcohol sales will be suspended at the end of the third quarter.
Sales will be managed by Centerplate, Kansas Athletics’ concessionaire. “KU and Centerplate are dedicated to responsible service and will collaborate on a Responsible Alcohol Service policy to provide a safe environment while providing a superior customer experience,” Long said. “As an example, those involved in the sale of alcohol will be required to be TIPS-certified (Training for Intervention Procedures).”
Nationally, approximately 50 Division I FBS programs have public alcohol sales on football game days, and in April 2018 the NCAA approved alcohol sales at NCAA Championship events.
The following will be available for purchase in 2019: Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Goose Island IPA, Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer, Cabernet Sauvignon red wine, Chardonnay white wine. Additional options will be available for purchase.
“Our research and that of others indicates that not only does alcohol availability promote attendance and improve the gameday experience for fans, it has the potential to reduce alcohol-related incidents in and around the venue,” Long said.
Gameday Concessions
Kansas Athletics’ official concessionaire, Centerplate, will offer the following new menu items for 2019 season: Loaded Tator Tots, Cheesburger Rollers, Chicken Rollers and Bacon Wrapped Chops.
New LED Ribbon Boards in North End Zone
Two brand new outdoor LED 13mm HD boards were installed in the north end zone of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to provide fans with improved viewing of game stats, crowd prompts and more. Each board is 60 inches tall and 84 inches wide.
Crimson and Blue BBQ
Kansas Athletics is hosting its first-ever Crimson and Blue BBQ Friday, Aug. 30-Sunday, Sept. 1 in the east parking lot (Lot 94) of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. As an officially sanctioned KCBS event, teams entered will have a chance to qualify to compete in the American Royal Barbeque.
Registration includes tickets to the Kansas vs. Indiana State football game on August 31. Entrants will compete in the “People’s Choice” competition on Saturday and the judged competition on Sunday. Fan votes on Saturday will help determine the “People’s Choice” winner. Cash prizes will be awarded both days. For more information and to register your team follow this link.
