HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army of Reno County, the Christian Soup Ministry, the Reno County Food Bank, and Hospice and Homecare of Reno County will benefit from a $1.1 million gift to the Hutchinson Community Foundation.

The gift was made through the Arthur R. and Margery A. Eveland Fund through the Hutchinson Community Foundation. The Evelands also left a portion of their estate to Trinity United Methodist Church. The $255,000 will support Trinity’s ministries, operations and property upgrades.

Originally from Nebraska, the Evelands moved to Hutchinson after Art’s service as a corpsman with the 4th Marine Division during World War II. They began Art Eveland Photography. The business became a regional draw for portrait, event and commercial photography. The couple joined Trinity United Methodist Church on May 18, 1952.

The pair lived modestly and they quietly gave wherever they saw a need — be it canned-good donations to the Reno County Food Bank, clothing to high school students in need, or paying for their church’s kitchen renovation. The Evelands retired in 1986. Art died Nov. 7, 2017, at age 94, and Margery died Feb. 21, 2018, at age 91.

Additionally, Hutchinson Community Foundation received nearly $900,000 from the estate of Avory and Lois Johnson, longtime Hutchinson business owners and active community volunteers.

The Johnsons’ fund will support First Call for Help, The Salvation Army of Hutchinson, the Cosmosphere and the Reno County Emergency Energy Fund. The largest portion of the gift will create an endowed fund to support emergency medical services and training of students to become EMTs or paramedics in Reno County.

The exact dollar amounts each organization will receive from the estates have not been finalized. Organizations will be informed when those details are available.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council set a public hearing date of Aug. 14 for the 2019 budget.

The proposed budget approved Tuesday totals $1,614,816 on total taxes levied of $335,879.
Under next year’s budget, the mill levy will fall from 51.873 mills to 51.474 mills.

Also Tuesday, the council once again tabled any decision on the proposed franchise fee for city utilities. The council decided it wanted to gather more public input and educate residents on what the fee would mean to the city.

The city wants to adopt a 2.5 percent fee on utility bills to generate some funds for infrastructure improvements.

The matter will go before the council again during the August meeting.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center was able to successfully remove a 6-ton MRI machine through an opening in the roof of the facility early Wednesday morning.

The old MRI machine has been replaced with a new $2 million system that is part of the new ICU Unit set to open later this month.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Arconic reported second-quarter earnings and revenue that beat expectations, according to Market Watch.

The company, which employs 75 workers at the Hutchinson facility, also saw a 10 percent increase in revenue at $3.6 billion

The only negative number for the company came from its net income, which totaled $120 million, or $0.24 per share, versus $212 million, or $0.43 per share, in the second quarter of 2017.

The metal finishing company’s three business segments — transportation and construction, global rolled products, and engineered products and solutions — all beat revenue expectations.

Arconic’s global rolled products division reported revenue of $1.5 billion, an increase of 14 percent year-over-year. Organic revenue was up 5 percent. The segment was hurt by an unfavorable market in wide body aerospace production and higher aluminum prices. Operating profit was $123 million, down $10 million year-over-year.

Tyson is next in line to report its quarterly earnings. The poultry and meat giant releases its numbers on Monday.
