PHOENIX, Ariz. — The FBI in Phoenix is still investigating an officer-involved shooting/assault on a federal officer that occurred on Friday afternoon on Arizona State Route 89A, north of Sedona.

A Forest Service Officer stopped to render assistance to a vehicular traffic accident. An altercation occurred between the officer and 51-year-old Tyler Miller of Hutchinson.

It was later determined the officer was injured and treated on the scene by EMS personnel. Miller was shot by the officer, transferred to a medical center and later declared deceased.

In a release, Sunday, the attorney for Miller said his client had been traveling to a spiritual retreat.

Attorney Matt Bretz said Miller lost control of his pickup truck while driving on a curving mountain road. It was after the accident that the altercation occurred north of Sedona.

 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A house cleaning matter regarding the Chamber’s CVB and partnering entities raised the desire to re-establish contact with the city of South Hutchinson in regard to its departure from the CVB in late 2016.

The matter came up for discussion as the City Council approved a contract with the CVB excluding the city of South Hutchinson from the language. It was a matter that City Manager John Deardoff simply wanted cleaned up from the contract. But it also brought discussion from the Council as to why the small community left the CVB and if it were possible to establish ties to get it back on board. Mayor John Daveline expressed his disappointment about South Hutchinson dropping off the CVB and said he would like to approach the new City Council about rejoining.

The city dropped from the Chamber entity in September of 2016 in a sudden move by the Council stating that the CVB did not provide enough benefit for the amount of money being provided by the South Hutchinson Bed Tax. That tax, which is at 7 percent, provided about $40,000 to the CVB. That money is now directed to the Market South Hutch initiative.

South Hutchinson City Manager Matt Stiles said the money has been used to advertise special events and promote the city and its activities. He also said that he would welcome any conversation between the CVB and the City Council.

KINGMAN COUNTY, Kan. — The KDH&E has issued a boil water advisory for the small community of Spivey in Kingman County after a power outage shut down the city’s water system, leaving it open to possible contamination.

The order was issued by the state yesterday and remains in effect until water samples can be taken to determine if the service was compromised in any way. Such tests take a day or two to complete.

Spivey has a population of around 75 residents and is located about 15 miles south and west of Kingman.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s ironic that a railroad grade crossing that was the scene of an accident involving a large dump truck this week will go before Reno County Commissioners for approval of updates to that crossing during Tuesday’s agenda session.

BNSF and the county will seek an agreement for the installation of grade crossing signals at Salem Road. It was Wednesday that a large truck driven by a Hutchinson man struck a westbound BNSF train in the center of the lead locomotive, destroying the truck, but causing only minor injuries to the driver. The crossing currently sports a normal crossbuck warning sign.

Also Tuesday, the board will consider an agreement with WSP-USA Inc. for engineering work for the replacement or renovation of six bridges, including replacing the 43rd Avenue Bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad. The other spans on the list include replacing the Arkansas River bridge on Nickerson Road; and the renovation of the Nickerson Boulevard bridge over the Cow Creek Floodway; the Wilson Road/Willowbrook bridge; a bridge on 82nd Avenue over the Blaze Fork Creek; and the Little Arkansas River bridge on Medora Road. Four of those projects are on a list to be paid for with general obligation bonds instead of with the normal bridge mill levy fund. The cost of the engineering services is $463,650.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse.
