RCB Bank teams up with Cosmosphere to provide summer camp opportunities

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere has always provided great space camps for youth to participate in. The camps are a way to encourage STEM-type learning and teach youth about the adventures of space and science. Now, RCB Bank is partnering with the Cosmosphere to send 10 students in sixth through eighth grade to Cosmosphere Camp this summer.

Five students from Kansas and five students from Oklahoma will be awarded a camp scholarship from RCB Bank and will be eligible to choose to attend either Cosmosphere Aerospace Camp 101 or 201. To be eligible for consideration, participants must register and compete in a space agriculture contest where they will attempt to grow the most food within a one-cubic meter garden, mimicking experiments currently taking place on the International Space Station. The contest begins Feb. 1, 2019, and concludes on April 30, 2019.

Students wishing to participate must register by emailing education@cosmo.org. Winners will choose to attend either Cosmosphere Camp 101 or 201, where they will train like real astronauts in Cosmosphere simulators like the 4-G centrifuge, multi-axis trainer and stress simulator. Students will engage with rocket engineering history through artifacts found only at the Cosmosphere and build rockets including a model V2. Finally, contest winners will fly missions in the Falcon lll spacecraft simulator and even train for microgravity environments with a SCUBA experience.

HHS swim team finishes third at home meet

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High swim team finished third at its home meet on Tuesday.

McPherson won the team title, followed by Dodge City and then the Hawks.

Thompson fired as South Hutchinson Police Chief

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of South Hutchinson is without a police chief. The City Council voted not to re-appoint Chief Mark Thompson.

Thompson took over for former Chief Scott Jones, who retired last year. Since then, the police department staff was cut in a string of cost-cutting moves by the city to keep the budget in line. Those cuts also came at the heels of City Manager Matt Stiles’ resignation.

Chief Thompson talked with hutchpost.com this morning. When asked why he was terminated, he said, “They did not say, they just voted. I’ve never had any discussions with the council about any concerns.”

Council President Joe Honeycutt could not say how soon the council will appoint a new chief. Honeycutt said all other appointments were approved during the meeting.

Cheney Superintendent David Grover to interview in USD 308 Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The third of four candidates for the USD 308 superintendent job is David Grover.

Grover has been superintendent at Cheney Public Schools since July 1, 2012. Before that, he was principal at Iola High School in southeast Kansas.

The finalist will tour the district and meet with various district groups. There will be a staff and community reception for Grover from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle.

The board will then meet with the finalist in an executive session at 5:45 p.m. at the Administration Center.

There will be no superintendent interview on Thursday. The final interview will be on Friday.

Current Haven superintendent Clark Wedel and Moundridge superintendent George Leary have already interviewed for the job.

Crusader bowling takes 2 from Andale

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Buhler bowling team picked up wins yesterday in a duel with Andale at The Alley.

On the girls side, Buhler shot a team total of 2,011 to Andale’s 1,177. Jaiden Montando had the high game for Buhler with a 200, while the high series went to McKinley Cross with 556.

On the boys side, Buhler shot a team score of 2,345 to Andale’s 2,283. Fabian Malachi shot a team-high 244. Andale’s Carson Fair had the high game of the meet with a 255.

The series high for the Crusaders went to Aaron Bergkamp with a 621. Malachi and Noah Sheahan both shot a 607 series.

Leary to interview for Hutchinson superintendent job Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The next candidate that will interview for the vacant superintendent job in Hutchinson USD 308 is current Moundridge superintendent George Leary.

Leary has been superintendent at Moundridge Public Schools since July 1, 2015. Before that, he was principal at Newton’s Santa Fe Middle School. The educator has his master’s degree in educational administration from Kansas State University and a bachelor’s degree of natural sciences from Bethel College in North Newton.

The finalist will tour the district and meet with various district groups. There will be a staff and community reception for Leary from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle.

The board will then meet with the finalist in an executive session at 5:45 p.m. at the Administration Center.

Gilligan named Magistrate for 27th District

Hutchinson, Kan. — Reno County has its new Magistrate Judge.

Reno County prosecutor Daniel Gilligan from the District Attorney’s office has been named to replace Cheryl Allen who stepped down last month. Gilligan who was a Senior District Attorney with the DA’s office was appointed by Gov. Jeff Colyer to fill the 27th District seat.

Gilligan received his undergraduate degree from Wichita State University and a law degree from Washburn University.

Hutch wrestlers third at Redskin Classic

WICHITA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk wrestling team brought home third place from the very tough Wichita North Redskin Classic. Wichita Northwest won the team title followed by Shawnee Heights. Izaiah Delvalle at 138 pounds and Levi Allen at 170 pounds took home first place finishes for the Salthawks. Aracely Villegas at 106 pounds and Maritza Jimenez at 120 pounds won for the Salthawks in the girls division.

Haven Superintendent the first to interview for USD 308 position

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will begin interviewing five finalist for the Superintendent’s position starting today. The first finalist is current Haven USD 312 Superintendent Clark Wedel.

Wedel has been superintendent at Haven Public Schools since July 1, 2015. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as a principal at Moundridge. He received his masters for educational leadership and administration from Wichita State University. He also has a bachelor’s degree in education for industrial technology from Emporia State University. He began his educational career as an industrial arts teacher.

The finalist will tour the district and meet with various district groups. There will be a staff and community reception for Wedel from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle.

The Board, then, will meet with the finalist in an executive session at 5:45 p.m. at the Administration Center.

State of the City set for Jan. 16

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson AMBUCS and the Chamber of Commerce will once again host the annual State of the City address.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the Atrium Hotel & Conference Center.

Guests will have the opportunity to hear from City Manager John Deardoff and Mayor Steve Dechant on the milestones of 2018 and what the business community can look forward to in 2019.

The cost to attend is $12 for members and $22 for non-members.
