Hildebrandt ends 47-year run at State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bill Hildebrandt has worked through 43 Kansas State Fairs, but this year’s fair was his last. Hildebrandt, who began working at the fairgrounds following his service in the Vietnam War, will retire at the end of this week.

Hildebrandt worked as the fair’s carpenter and grew up on the fairgrounds in the 1950’s. His parents helped organize the annual South Hutchinson United Methodist concessions for many years. His mother made pies and chicken noodles at the church. His father would get off from his job as a parts clerk at a local dealership and head to the church’s fair booth, where he washed dishes every evening.

Hildebrandt graduated from Nickerson High School in 1969. Eight months later, he was fighting in Vietnam as a Navy gunner’s mate. Every year, until he returned in 1974, his father would send him a box of peanuts from the state fair vendor.

In April 1976, he applied for a job at the Kansas State Fair as a general laborer. He figured he would work at the fair for just a few years. Now 43 years later, he retires as one of the Kansas State Fair’s longest-serving employees in its 106-year history.

Moran throws support to airport bill

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Hutchinson Airport is one of many in Kansas that would benefit from a bill introduced by U.S. Senator Jerry Moran. Moran, a member of the Senate Committee on commerce is pushing for House Resolution 302, which would allow airports that utilize the contract tower program to become eligible for airport improvement program grants from the small airport fund.

The provision introduced was included in H.R. 302 that was recently signed into law by the president.

“Hutchinson is one of eight air traffic control towers across Kansas that utilize the contract tower program, [who] not only provide an important safety service for critical local airports, but they do so in a cost-effective manner,” said Sen. Moran.

Hooper speaks of new programs for Hutchinson Police Department

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — New Hutchinson Police Chief Jeffrey Hooper had the audience’s undivided attention during Wednesday’s Chamber Breakfast.

With the police force making the news for some wrong reasons, Hooper presented his vision and what he expects of his force and staff. Hooper says he is implementing three new programs at the start of the year, one being a new K-9 unit:

Other programs being put in place deal with repeat offenders and how to keep them from committing crimes in the city:

 

Also at the beginning of the year, officers will be assigned one area of the city and will be in that area for at least one year to become better connected with the area schools, and to better deal with issues in that particular part of the city.

HutchCC Board of Directors meets Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will consider a resolution that will refinance more than $5.5 million in building improvements done in 2007.

The college entered into a lease agreement with a company that specializes in environmental improvements. The school renovated buildings with better heating and air systems, improved windows and improvements to bathroom fixtures.

Recently the college found an opportunity to refinance the lease, saving the college about $50,000 after expenses. The new lease will run through 2027 just as the previous one did.

Also Thursday, the board may take action on a 1 percent increase in dorm and meal fees for next year.

According to Director of Finance Julie Blanton the proposal may be tabled so more study can be done on how meals will be affected when the school begins a major renovation of the student union dining area.

The plan is for an expanded dining area and new a kitchen which is slated for construction later in 2019. The total cost of the project is $4.5 million.

Thursday’s meeting of the HutchCC Board of trustees beings at 7 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center.

Hutchinson Police take reports of religious groups soliciting businesses

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department has reported that over the past several weeks, they have received several complaints about a particular religious group contacting people at local businesses requesting they go to a residence and attend a bible study.

Law enforcement says that people are concerned about the validity of the group and that they are possibly involved in criminal activity. Police say they have talked with members who have been soliciting at the businesses. Through the investigation, the group has been deemed to be from a valid and established religious group.

When informed their recruiting practice was making citizens uncomfortable, they agreed to discontinue recruiting in this manner. If you have been contacted and would like to speak with someone at the police department, please contact Sgt. Collins at 620-694-2826.

Salvation Army bell ringing campaign needs boost

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With little time left before Christmas, the Salvation Army continues with its bell ringing campaign. The campaign is the largest fundraiser for the agency and is used to put their budget together for the following year.

The SA announced Tuesday that they only have about $26,000 raised which is only 39 percent of their need for the year. The budget for the year totals $66,000.

Bell ringers are still needed and of course any donation will be greatly appreciated. If you would like more information, you can contact the Salvation Army at 620-663-3353.

A Taste of Hutchinson tickets now on sale

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tickets are now on sale for A Taste of Hutchinson. The event will be held at the Hutchinson Art Center on Jan. 19, and will feature the best samples of culinary delights from 26 cooks.

Beer from Salt City Brewery and Wine will be available during the evening as well as samples of all of the dishes prepared. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at Apron Strings or the Trinity United Methodist Church at 17th and Main.

The funds raised at this event will go to Salthawk Community Support which is a ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church. SCS is a program that provides basic needs to Hutchinson students along with supportive listening and mentoring programs. Country 102.9 Adopt-A-Child event another success

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Eagle radio station Country 102.9 made Christmas brighter for a lot of children again this year.

The 28th annual Adopt-A-Child event took place this week with 195 children served through the generous donations of toys and gifts by our listeners.

The program runs with the help of St. Francis and the Reno County Communities That Care.

Names are provided to Eagle Communications from the Department of Children and Families. Our listeners then adopt a child and purchase items on a list provided by the family in need. Country 102.9 and Eagle would like to thank all of those who helped package gifts, made donations of toys and helped with their distribution.

And thank you to Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram for their help throughout the event.

Sales tax numbers fall in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County’s sales tax collection fell sharply in the month of November when compared to previous years.

Total sales tax revenue for the month was $358,684 compared to $392,416 in 2017. That means tax revenue for the jail was also down from this same time last year. Tax revenue that goes to the jail totaled $441,609 compared to $484,630 in 2017.

For the year the county has taken in $4,073,702 which means it will take in more this year than the previous year.

November numbers reflect shopping trends for the month of September.

Salthawk wrestling goes 4-3 at Colby

COLBY, Kan. — It was a busy week for the Hutchinson High wrestling team as they participated in the Colby Dual Tournament on Saturday. The Salthawks went 4-3 winning matches over Hays, Goodland, Tonganoxi and Oberlin. Hutchinson dropped matches to Wray and Monarch Colorado along with Phillipsburg.

The Salthawks are back on the mat Thursday when they host Derby starting at 6 p.m. at the Hutchinson High School north gym.
