Douglas Glen Spitler | 1960 – 2019 |

Douglas Glen Spitler, 59, died October 20, 2019, at his home, Chestnut House, McPherson. He was born October 3, 1960, in Guymon, OK, to Ronald D. and Kay M. (Minihan) Spitler.

Doug was a resident of Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka from 1965 to 1980 and then Multi Community Diversified Services in McPherson since 1980 and was their longest living resident.  He participated in the Special Olympics for over 40 years. Doug was a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan and had a deep love for his country. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson.

Doug is survived by: siblings, Terri Shurtleff, Wichita, Rick and Amy Spitler, Hutchinson, Joey and Sarah Keating, Russellville, AR, Rona and Todd Fitzmier, Sparks, NV, stepfather, Joe Keating, Hutchinson; nine nieces and nephews; five great-nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kay Keating.

Parish rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 2019, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., both at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th Ave., Hutchinson, with Father Michael J. Maybrier officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with the family to receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to MCDS or Special Olympics, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Karen Bertrand | 1938 – 2019 |

Karen L. Bertrand, 81, of Hutchinson, died October 18, 2019, at Hospice House. She was born July 1, 1938, to Benjamin and Esther (Schroeder) Thrasher.

Karen graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1956 and received her teaching certificate from Hutchinson Community College. She worked for Dillons in the meat department for 34 years, before retiring. Karen loved watching old black and white films, crafts, baking, and cake decorating.

On August 16, 1958 she married Robert Bertrand, in Hutchinson. They shared 42 years of marriage before his death on November 14, 2001.

Karen is survived by: son, Brian Bertrand (Jennifer), Inman; daughter, Robin Vieyra, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jennifer Browning, Wichita, Christopher Bertrand, Andre Vieyra (Megan), Renee Vieyra, and Gabrielle Garcia (Jeremy), all of Hutchinson; six great-grandchildren; and siblings, Gary Thrasher, Linda Settle (Randy), Sherry Bowman, Carolyn ‘Jeanie’ Price (Mose), and Marieta Thrasher, all of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Robert Bertrand; brother, Clifford ‘Skip’ Thrasher; and great-grandson, Tyler Bertrand.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson.

A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Friends may sign the book from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Perry L. Miller | 1925 – 2019 |

Perry L. Miller, 94, of Hutchinson, died October 18, 2019. He was born August 7, 1925, in rural Hutchinson, to Levi D. and Clara (Nisly) Miller.

Perry was an educator, serving as principal and teacher in the Reno County schools of Elm Hurst and Elreka for 32 years. After retiring from education, he worked in sales for Sturdi-Bilt Storage Barns for twenty years. Perry was a member of numerous organizations, including the boards of Prairie View in Newton, Mennonite Friendship Communities, MDS (Mennonite Disaster Service), and Et Cetera Shoppe. In addition, he was a member of Gideons International and as a young man, served in a health clinic in Puerto Rico with the Mennonite Central Committee. Perry was a faithful member of Center Amish Mennonite Church. For many years, he enjoyed teaching Bible classes at local prisons, and took part in prison revivals in Atmore, AL.

On November 11, 1948, he married Judith ‘Judy’ Schrock in Riverside, Iowa. They shared 67 years of marriage, prior to her death June 3, 2016. Perry and Judy did many activities together, especially after retirement. They enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends, and working trade shows, representing the family business. Together, they took loving care of their handicapped son.

Perry is survived by: sons, Gary Paul Miller and wife Rosanna, Linford James Miller, Allen Jason Miller, all of Hutchinson, Wilbur Jay Miller and wife Shirley of Columbus, OH; siblings, Willis Miller, Mahlon Miller, Fred Miller, all from Hutchinson, Mary Beachy and husband Joseph of Kalona, IA, Paul Miller and wife Martha, Emma Troyer and husband Oliver, all of Partridge; nine grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents and siblings, Edwin, Harry, David, and Daniel Miller, and Elizabeth Wagler.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2019, at Center Amish Mennonite Church, 7611 W. Morgan, Hutchinson. Burial will follow in West Center Cemetery, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to Mennonite Friendship Communities, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Gary D. Hornbeck | 1943 – 2019 |

Gary D. Hornbeck, 76, died October 17, 2019, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.  He was born January 10, 1943, in Hutchinson, to George and Jane (Hamill) Hornbeck.  Gary attended Hutchinson schools and worked as a machinist at Cessna/Eaton until his retirement.  He loved old cars and dragging Main in his red Chevy short-bed pickup.  Gary had an extensive collection of 50’s and 60’s music and enjoyed disassembling all types of things.  But most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

On August 5, 1976, Gary married Marilyn Anne Gore in Ozark, MO. They shared 43 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: son, George and wife Jenna of Kansas City; daughter, Shelley Conner and husband Chad of Marquette; grandchildren, Joshua and Bryce Swisher; great-grandchildren, Logan and Parker Swisher; brothers, Robert Hornbeck, Wayne Hornbeck and wife Rachel, all of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: brothers, Carl, Ray, Oscar, Jim, and Jack Hornbeck; sisters, Roberta King, Helen Frank, Marge Banworth, MaryJane Barkley, and Betty Blanchard.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Gary’s life will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign the memorial book from 1-5 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary. Private family burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Velma Jean Carden | 1932 – 2019 |

Velma Jean Carden, 87, died October 15, 2019, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson.  She was born May 27, 1932, in Meade, to Jacob E. and Bertha (Androes) Thiessen.

Velma was a 1950 graduate of Inman High School and attended Salt City Business College, Hutchinson.  She was a homemaker and supporter and partner for her husband’s various activities and business ventures.  Together, they were the owners of Carden’s Radio and TV Repair, which became Carden’s Electronics, and then Radio Shack.  In later years, they established Furniture Doc, a furniture repair and woodworking shop. Velma enjoyed doing needle art, such as embroidering, crocheting and sewing.  She was a member of New Life Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson.

On July 24, 1955, Velma married John Wilford ‘Willie’ Carden, Sr., at the Inman Mennonite Church.  They shared over 58 years of marriage until his death on December 20, 2013.

She is survived by:  son, John Carden, Jr., Hutchinson; daughter, Susan (Joseph Gonzales) Carden, Hutchinson; grandson, Matthew (Draylinn) Carden, Maize; Janee (Jason) Enns, Decatur, NE; great-grandchildren, Allie, Chance, Cooper and Emalinn; brother, Leslie (Joy) Thiessen; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by:  her parents; husband, John W. Carden, Sr.; brothers, Ronald and Larry Thiessen; sister, Shirley Shuff; and nephew, Steve Shuff.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at North Inman Cemetery, Inman, with Chaplain Paul Danner officiating.  Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Serenity Hospice Care, Hutchinson, or Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
