Glen Grunwald’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Glen Grunwald of KWBW 1450 AM and 98.5 FM received the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from our Eagle Communications’ station in Hays. Not only did Glen accept, he also challenged Randy Stange of HCC Athletics and Eric Armstrong of Hutchinson High School Athletics. Stange and Armstrong have 24 hours to complete the challenge and donate to the ALSA for ALS research.

Glen donated to the Keith Worthington Chapter. Click the link if you’d like to donate, too. As this challenge sweeps the nation for a great cause, individuals are challenged to dump ice water over their head for charity within 24 hours of being challenged, or must donate $100 to the ALS charity of their choice. By completing the challenge, individuals may donate anything less than $100.

 

HCC Star named Vegas MVP

LAS VEGAS — A star from the East made his name known in the West.

Hutchinson Community College Men’s Basketball standout Kadeem Allen was named the NJCAA Coaches Association All-Star Game MVP. Allen posted a double-double without committing a single turnover. He was 7 of 15 shooting from the floor whilst dropping 18 points and nabbing 10 rebounds, four of them offensively. Allen reminded spectators of his unselfishness by dishing six assists.

Allen, the Wilmington, N.C. native, made a name for himself in the Midwest by repeating as a First-Team All-American and becoming the first Blue Dragon to ever record a triple-double.

Teammates with Allen for the All-Star Game included National Champion Forward Johnny Zuppardo from Jones County who scored 21 points. Willie Wiley of Vincennes and Lester Medford of Indian Hills helped Allen’s team win 123-106. Wiley contributed 5 rebounds while Medford, the NJCAA Tournament Bud Obee Outstanding Small Player recipient, knocked down 17 points.

Allen will play Division 1 Basketball next year, in the West nonetheless, at the University of Arizona.

Caitlin is originally from the tiny town of Herington, KS and moved down to the Hutchinson/Wichita area to be a student at Wichita State University. (Go Shockers!) After playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter third grade play, she knew her life would never be the same. Ten years later, she was enrolling to be a Theater Performance Major at WSU. She’s not your typical theater kid because Broadway is not her end goal. Caitlin holds such a passion for music that during the summer of 2013, she decided to intern for Clear Channel Communications in Wichita, and absolutely fell in love with radio.
 
In July of 2014, she will finally have her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance and couldn’t be happier. In Caitlin’s free time, you can find her doing just about anything: from working on her bits for her stand up comedy routines, to binging Netflix and eating cupcakes, to working on her book that will one day (hopefully soon) be published. She loves meeting new people and you can definitely follow her on Twitter!

Daren Dunn

 

Daren is a Hutchinson native who attended Central Christian before graduating from Pretty Prairie High School. At Pretty Prairie, Daren was a three-sport athlete in Football, Basketball and Track. He served as the Senior Class Vice President and was nominated Homecoming King. Daren won the Class 1A Improvised Duet Acting State Championship with his partner David Painter. Daren performed in the school play his junior and senior year. He played the lead character in Cheaper by the Dozen the same year Steve Martin played the role in Hollywood.

Daren moved on to Hutchinson Community College where he earned his Associate Degree in Arts. While at HCC, Daren was active in theatre and broadcasting. He played Moliere’s Tartuffe and appeared in Chicago, The Tempest, Loose Change Players Improv and Honk! Daren was the Sports Anchor on HCC Channel 13 and hosted his own sports show with players and coaches. His Sportscast won first place in the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Awards, finishing ahead of entries from the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.

Daren then earned his Bachelor of Science in Journalism at the University of Kansas. At KU, he hosted Jayhawk Sports Talk on KUJH-TV, anchored the television sportscast and hosted The Big Finish on KJHK radio. Daren received four more KAB awards for his work in radio and television, including Best Entertainment Program in the state for JST.

Cooper

Cooper was born in Seattle Washington just before Disco became popular. At the young age of 12 he figured out that radio was a job like no other. Play Music – Get Paid. The writing (spray paint) was on the wall and DB was hooked by this crazy business! His loves are his family, his job, his pets, Italian food and a nice chilled fresh box of wine. He enjoys all types of music as well. AC/DC, Linkin Park, The Beastie Boys, Bocephus, Johnny Cash.. DB Cooper said in a recent interview “If it’s good music, it’s good music. Nuff said. Can I have my latte and my change now?” At a 16 he moved to California and got his surf on until he was 18. Then he was off to travel the world in search of a higher education.. DB has since lived in California, Oregon, Florida, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, South Carolina, Indiana and Chanute Kansas (Go Comets!) and now.. Here. This feels like home- Except in the winter months then it feels cold! He lives with his wife Heather, his dog Buster and his cat Boogie. –

Little known facts about Cooper:

Cooper really doesn’t like to fly… Or skydive…anymore….

He can swim just fine as long as he can see the bottom of the pool.

Yes, he is a smart aleck OFF the radio too..

You can find Cooper at most any coffee house ordering a Latte at 125 degrees with 2 sugars..

Casey Osburn

I’ve had the radio bug since I was a little boy in Newton, KS. I would spend hours in my room spinning records (vinyl, oval-shaped objects that contained tiny bumps that produced music for those young’ns out there) and pretending I was on the air. Aside from making my parents seriously consider psychological help for me, it paved the way for a career I love with Eagle Radio and My 93-1 the past 14 years. (holy cow…has it been that long???)

I’ve been lucky to have had some very smart radio people to learn from since I began. I’ve learned how to do things ‘the right way’ and I’ve been flat out lucky in that regard!

I attended KU in the 1990s to become a meteorologist (another passion of mine) but ultimately decided radio was more fun! Don’t think I’m not jumping in my car and chasing tornadoes every time we have severe weather! (I’m going back to school this fall to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science). I’m a huge Jayhawk fan (in fact I cut myself a few years ago and actually bled crimson and blue!) and you’ll find me yelling and screaming at Allen Field House at least once or twice a year (and in front of my TV for the rest of the games).
