Schools keeping eye on measles

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — While no cases of measles have been reported in Reno County, Hutchinson USD 308 is still Screen-Shot-2014-07-23-at-11.31.08-AM.pngkeeping a close eye on it, especially with school just around the corner.

Superintendent Spokesperson Ray Hemman says they are working with the Reno County Health department to track progress of the disease which, so far, has been confined to Sedgwick and Johnson Counties. Hemman says they hope parents will have their children vaccinated, but understands that sometimes that’s not possible. Still, if the measles were to invade the school district, Hemman says they will take action against students who aren’t vaccinated which includes keeping them from attending classes. Hemman says it becomes a matter of protecting students and staff.

All USD 308 students must have all of their immunizations or a written statement as to why they don’t by the time school starts August 13th.

Kansas woman hospitalized after Tuesday evening accident

GALATIA, Kan-Screen Shot 2014-07-03 at 5.13.15 AM A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a  2013 Kia Soul driven by Jean Ellen Edwards, 59, Otis, was southbound on 176th Street three miles west of Galatia.

The vehicle was traveling at rate of speed too great for the road conditions.

The driver attempted to turn left on NW 230 Road and entered the south ditch coming to rest in a field.

Edwards was transported to Clara Barton Hospital  in Hoisington.

The KHP reported she was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Victims in Sunday’s fatal wrong way crash identified

WICHITA-  Law enforcement officials are investigating a deadly crash that occurred just before 6 a.m. on Sunday in Butler County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Dominic B. Stolfi,16, Benton, was westbound in the eastbound lanes of Kansas 254 two miles east of Bel Aire.

A 2007 Buick Lucerne driven by Lisa A. Hardy, 27, Potwin, was eastbound in the outside lane. The Buick went to the shoulder to avoid the Ford. The two vehicles collided on the shoulder.

Stolfi, Hardy and a passenger in the Buick Nancy R. Ross, 52, Potwin, were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Sedgwick County Forensics Center.

The KHP reported Stolfi was not wearing a seat belt.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Three south-central Kansas residents are dead after a head-on collision involving a driver going the wrong way on a state highway near the Sedgwick County/Butler County line.

The Wichita Eagle  reports a green Ford was westbound in the eastbound lanes of K-254 when it struck a black Buick around 6 a.m. Sunday. Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman David Monckton says the driver of the Ford and two occupants in the Buick were killed in the collision.

Monckton says the three Butler County residents included two women and a man. He says emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way shortly before 6 a.m., and a few minutes later there was another call saying there had been a crash.

Police: Missing woman, 19, found

Screen Shot 2014-01-26 at 6.28.31 PM(AP) — Lawrence police say they have located a 19-year-old woman whose disappearance led to the discovery of a 52-year-old man’s body at the Lawrence home they shared.

Sarah Brooke Gonzales McLinn’s family reported her missing earlier this month. When police went to the home where McLinn had been living they found the body of Harold M. Sasko. McLinn and Sasko’s vehicle were missing.

Lawrence police Sgt. Trent McKinley said in a release late Sunday that a Florida law enforcement agency contacted Lawrence police Saturday saying they believe they had found McLinn.

McKinley says Lawrence detectives flew to Florida on Sunday and confirmed that McLinn had been located. He says McLinn appears uninjured and Sasko’s vehicle has also been located. The investigation into Sasko’s death remains ongoing.

Kansas woman dies after vehicle stalls on I-70

Fatal crash(AP) — A Manhattan woman died after her disabled car was struck by another car on Interstate 70.

Thirdy-five year-old Dale Colleen Williams died Sunday evening on the interstate about eight miles south of Manhattan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says when Williams got out of her disabled vehicle, her car was hit by a car driven by an Ottawa man, 57 year old  Randy L Jost of Ottawa.  Williams’ vehicle then hit her.

William was pronounced dead at Manhattan Mercy Hospital.
