HUTCHINSON, KAN. — No. 2 seed South Plains let a good lead get away before slipping past Trinity Valley in the second round of the NJCAA National Tournament 82-75.

Trey Wade and Gaige Prim both powered the Texan’s offense with 22 points each. Deon Barrett added another 15. South Plains moves on to Thursday’s game at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals were led by Tyson Jolly, who led all scorers with 24 points, as their season ends at 28-8. The Cardinals had chances throughout the game with several small leads. In the end, South Plains’ offense seized control. The Cards shot just 37 percent in the game, but were a nice 13 of 13 from the foul line.

Trinity Valley also won the rebounding battle 39-34, but lost the overall contest.

 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hours after No. 1 seed Northwest Florida State crushed Cape Fear, Ranger College opened its play at the NJCAA National Tournament by casting aside Cleveland State 83-66.

Cleveland State sees its season end one day after becoming the first 24 seed to win a game at the tournament under the current 24-team format. Ranger got out quickly and — despite a little flat period — dominated the game. Caleb Asberry led the way with 18 points while Coryon Mason added 16. Ranger goes on to play Northwest Florida State on Thursday at noon. Despite being out-rebounded, Ranger forced 21 turnovers.

Cleveland State ends the season at 16-16. The Cougars were led by Maurice Dickson with 13 points. Kerry Pratt added 12 and both Demonte’ Person and Exavian Young chipped in 11.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It wasn’t flashy or explosive, it was just solid. No. 1 seed Northwest Florida State rolled past Cape Fear 95-75 in the second round of the NJCAA National Tournament.

The Raiders took Cape Fear apart at both ends of the floor and move on to the next round Thursday. The Raiders were led by Javon Hamlet with 25 points and Chris Durate with 23. NWFS also out-rebounded the Sea Devils 40-30 and shot a solid 59 percent from the field.

Cape Fear’s Donte Tatum led four players in double figures with 16 points along with 15 from both Quate McKinzie and Ryan Friday. The Sea Devils only managed 36 percent shooting from the field. The Sea Devils end the season at 27-6.

 

HUTCHINSON — Pearl River got off to a terrible start in their first round game of the NJCAA National Tournament, but righted the ship  quickly and went on to down Williston State 83-69.

Williston jumped out to a 22-9 lead but Pearl River turned up the defense and the shots stopped falling for the Tetons who end the season at 22-11. The Wildcats easily out rebounded Williston 45-34 and went to the line 36 times hitting 31 free throws. The Tetons shot just 10-14 from the line and, after the hot start, shot just 38 percent for the game.

Pearl River was led by Cedric Brim Jr. with 22 points, along with Jones James III and Brandon Rachal, who scored 12 each. The Wildcats take on Odessa in the second round Wednesday.

Williston was led by Amar Miller who led all scorers with 27 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

HUTCHINSON — Moberly jumped out to a quick lead then had to fight through a physical game en route to a 82-73 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. The Greyhounds raced out to a 9-0 lead but led by just three at the half.

The Norseman were able to pull ahead briefly in the second half, but a late barrage of three-point baskets helped the Greyhounds pull away. The Greyhounds were led by Alonzon Verge with 25 points, and he also dished out seven assists. Tahj Small had 17 points, and both Sean Miller-Moore and Markelpo Sullivan chipped in 16.

The Norseman were led by Kyle Lukasiewicz with 21 points and Ravel Moody with 16. NEO ends the season at 27-7.

Moberly moves on to play Vincennes on Wednesday.

 

HUTCHINSON — For the past three years, Indian Hills came to Hutchinson with lofty rankings and high expectations. But the Warriors were first round losers in all of them. This time, hampered by a major injury and with a record that was less than stellar, the Warriors made it through the first round.

IH jumped all over Central Georgia Tech with tough defense and a 30-point night from Torrey Patterson en route to an 84-62 win. The 27-6 Warriors move on to play Southwest Florida State in the next round. Indian Hills also collected 49 rebounds and forced 12 turnovers while committing just eight.

Central Georgia was led by Anyeuri Castillo with 17 points. CGT shot just 36 percent from the field and only managed 48 percent from the free throw line. Their season ends at 24-8.

HUTCHINSON — It wasn’t pretty but is was enough for Eastern Florida State as they used their size and tough defense in the second half to grind out a 61-51 win over Allegany College.

Down 35-33 with just over 11 minutes to play in the second half, the Titans held Allegany scoreless for seven consecutive trips down the floor to seize the lead. They move on to play Seward County at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Eastern Florida was led by Osyal Osifo with 13 points and Nick Stamply with 10. The Titans shot just 39 percent from the field but hauled in 49 rebounds to Allegany’s 29.

Allegany, which ends its season at 20-12, was led by Antoine Lewis with 16 points and Salvon Ward with 14. Alegany was held to just 30 percent shooting and was no match for EFSU’ s front line.

 

HUTCHINSON — Kaskaskia got 21 points from Parker Dortch and six players scored in double figures as the Blue Devils downed Sheridan College 92-80.

Garrett Belcher and Thomas Bell scored 19 points each and Jamal Thomas added 12. The Devils shot a respectable 52 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers on the evening.

The Generals were led by Sean Sutherland with 21 points and Cameron Reece with 16. Sheridan ends the season at 31-4, while Kaskaskia ( 24-10) moves on to play Coffeyville in the round of 16 at noon Wednesday.

 

HUTCHINSON — Trinity Valley seemed to have six or seven men on the floor as they won every loose ball and put two offensive runs together in their 82-70 win over Shelton State.

Trinity led by 14 at the half and, although the Buccaneers pulled close several times, the Cardinals were able to keep them at arm’s length.

Tyson Jolly led four players in double figures with 23 points. Bruce Simmons added 19. Trinity Valley moves into the next round to face defending champion South Plains at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Shelton State was led by Ruot Monyyoung with 22 points and Airen Brooks with 12. The Bucs end the season at 27-7.

 

 

 

HUTCHINSON — Cleveland State came into the tournament with a record of 15-15 — and pulled above the .500 mark with a stunning upset win over ninth seed and District 9 champion Casper in the first round of the NJCAA Tournament.

Despiute shooting just 39 percent from the field, Cleveland State pulled in front early and was ahead most of the way, although Casper had the score tied at 60 midway through the second half. Cleveland State was led by Jonathon King who scored 22 points. Domont’a White added 18, and Delaino Walker chipped in another 14.

Casper was led by Isaac Bonton who poured in 32 points in a loosing effort. Casper ends the season at 32-3. Cleveland State moves on to play Ranger College Tuesday at 4:30.
