Melvin Roy Flickinger, 93, of South Hutchinson, died Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born January 4, 1925, in Pretty Prairie, to Amos J. and Ida J. (Graber) Flickinger.
Melvin graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1943 and Bethel College in North Newton in 1952. He was a conscientious objector for the Civilian Public Service Corps serving from 1943 to 1946. Melvin was a middle school teacher for 30 years and a rural mail carrier for 16 years. He was a member of First Mennonite Church in both Pretty Prairie and Hutchinson. Melvin shared the gospel for 13 years singing with the ‘Quiet Place Singers’.
On August 4, 1949, he married Helen Schwartz in Pretty Prairie. They shared almost 65 years of marriage prior to her death August 2, 2014.
Melvin is survived by: daughters, Colleen Graber (Tom) of Wichita, Judy Campbell of Nevada, Missouri, Mary Krehbiel (Kirby) of Hutchinson; son, Mark Flickinger of Wichita; daughter-in-law, Deb Flickinger (Terry Weems) of Portland, Oregon; brothers, Calvin Flickinger of Phoenix, Arizona, Chester Flickinger of Denver, Colorado; four sisters-in-law; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Bradley J. Flickinger; brothers, Homer, Elmer, Virgil, Ted; sister, Mary Ann Bonebrake; infant sister, Mildred; and son-in-law, Doug Campbell.
Graveside service will be 9 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2018, at First Mennonite Church Cemetery, Pretty Prairie, with Pastor Nathan Koontz officiating. Celebration of Life will follow at 11 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Road, Hutchinson, with Pastors Tonya Ramer Wenger and Nathan Koontz officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
