HAYS -The bodies of two workers have been recovered from a sewage trench that collapsed in downtown Hays.

Hays Director of Finance Kim Rupp said that emergency crews responded to a 911 call shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and found three people trapped in the collapsed trench.

Rupp said the first body was recovered around 5:45 p.m. and the second body was recovered just before 10 p.m.

One person was rescued and taken to a hospital. That person’s condition is not immediately known.

The city has not released the names of the three people.

The city said that sewer line repairs were taking place in the area at the time of the incident.

HAYS- Two workers died after a trench collapse in downtown Hays on Tuesday afternoon.

A section of Main Street between Seventh and Eighth streets, just in front of the Ellis County Administrative Building has caved in just after 1:30p.m. trapping the workers.

Hays Police and Fire Department officials, along with Hays City workers, worked to secure the hole. One worker was taken from the trench to Hays Medical Center for treatment.

Hays Public Information Officer Kim Rupp says the scene of the trench collapse on south Main Street is now a “recovery operation.”

Main Street was closed, along with Eighth Street two blocks east of the Main Street intersection.

According to notices from the city of Hays, Wichita-based Layne and Christensen are doing the work.
