HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two Hutchinson men who entered pleas in separate marijuana cases are scheduled for sentencing on Friday.
20-year-old Jacob Bugg was convicted of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia to package drugs, personal use drug paraphernalia and possession of liquid codeine. However, as part of a plea agreement, he entered the plea to simple possession of marijuana and having no tax stamp. The state dropped the other charges and the severity level of the marijuana charge was also knocked down, meaning less time on any sentence.
His case started when Reno County Sheriff Deputy Jack Trussell initiated a traffic stop just after midnight back on May 30 in the 500 block of North Hendricks. The deputy says he immediately smelled marijuana when he made contact with occupants of the vehicle.
He then made the two occupants step out of the vehicle and allegedly found a prescription bottle which contained marijuana in the pocket of Bugg’s shorts. He was then placed under arrest for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, that being the prescription bottle which is often used to store marijuana.
The deputy then conducted a search of the vehicle and allegedly found a glass mason jar that contained approximately 48.7 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and a box of zip-close baggies. Also in the backpack was a liquid prescription bottle that contained liquid codeine.
The driver of the vehicle, Brittany Blackburn, told the deputy that the backpack belonged to Bugg.
In the other case, 23-year-old Christopher Boyd was convicted of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package, possession of marijuana and personal use drug paraphernalia.
The arrest coming back on Feb. 22 after a search warrant was served on a home in the 600 block of West 7th. A blue backpack was found that contained a glass jar with the marijuana. Also found was over $1,600 in cash. They also found a pipe with residue, and in his car was a scale with marijuana on it. In all, 18 grams of pot were found.
Both men are scheduled to be sentenced by District Judge Tim Chambers.
