WICHITA, Kan. – The Sedgwick County Detention Center now has its fourth death within that facility this year. The latest happened on Sunday at approximately 11:00 p.m.

Sedgwick County Sheriff officials say an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell. Medical aid was administered, but the inmate was pronounced dead. The cause of the death is yet to be determined.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division were notified. The 55-year-old man was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on September 30 on felony charges. His identity is being withheld at the request of the family.

The Sedgwick County Detention Facility booked 27,270 persons in 2014. In 2014, there were no suicides and 1 natural death of an inmate in custody.

This is the fourth in custody death this year. The first was that of an elderly inmate who battled terminal illness for several weeks prior to his death on January 21st. The second was that of a 25-year-old man who was being treated for a medical issue prior to his death on February 22nd. The third was that of a 55-year-old man who died on June 8th. The cause of his death is still undetermined pending the final autopsy report from the coroner’s office.
