DODGE CITY – One person was killed in a three vehicle accident in Ford County in western Kansas Thursday.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a passenger in a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Alma Angelina, Varela of Liberal was killed. He was identified as 48-year-old Alfredo Valera, also of Liberal.
Alma Valera was taken to Western Plains Regional Medical Center in Dodge City for treatment of her injuries. Neither one was wearing a seat-belt.
Valera was south bound on McArtor Road south of Dodge City, while a semi driven by 36-year-old John M Hirschler of Jansen, Nebraska was eastbound on U-S 56. The third vehicle, also a semi driven by 35-year-old Joel Vargas-Gonzalez of Dodge City was westbound on U-S 56.
Varela failed to yield at the intersection, and the Hirschler semi struck the passenger side of her vehicle, while the Vargas-Gonzalez semi made an avoidance maneuver and went of the roadway into the north ditch.
The accident occurring around 1:40 p-m, about 3-miles west of the Junction of U-S 283 and U-S 56, which is south of Dodge City.
