TOPEKA – Good news for those wanting to go camping this weekend at Cheney Reservoir. Analysis of samples taken by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reveal that the blue green algae bloom at the lake in southern Reno County has subsided. As a result the public health advisory can be lifted.

“Our testing showed that there are no high areas of concern at the moment,” explained Tom Langer, Director for the Bureau of Environmental Health. “That said, if you see any green material floating in the water, you, and especially your pets, should avoid it.”

It should also be noted that the lake at the Dillon Nature Center in Hutchinson is still under a warning meaning no swimming or wading in the water is allowed.

Other area lakes under warning include Santa Fe Lake, and Augusta City Lake in Augusta, Memorial Park Lake, in Great Bend, Rigg’s Park Lake, in Haysville, Harvey County East Lake, Harvey County Camp Hawk Lake, and Harvey County West Lake. Marion County Lake is under an advisory.

When a warning is issued, that means you should not drink lake water, avoid swimming, wading or other activities with full body contact of lake water, clean fish well, consume only the fillet portion, and discard all other parts, and keep pets from having contact with or drinking lake water
