HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Whether it belonged to NASA, the Cosmosphere, or the lady who purchased it at auction for less than $1,000, the NASA bag that flew to the moon aboard Apollo 11 was auctioned off today, garnering less than the expected $2 million.

The bag, impregnated with moon dust, ended up for sale at auction even it was the property of NASA. The bag was lost track of before the federal trial for former Cosmosphere President Max Ary.

Nancy Lee Carlson of Inverness, Illinois, bought it for $995 at a 2015 government auction. Attorney Christopher McHugh says his client sent it to Johnson Space Center for study.

Center officials deemed it government property and confiscated it. The government said the “rare artifact” was mistakenly sold. It was recovered in 2003 during the Ary trial.

A federal judge ruled in December that he didn’t have the authority to reverse the sale and that it belonged to Carlson.

The bag brought $1.5 million at auction Thursday morning. No word on who purchased the rare artifact.
