MINNEAPOLIS – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt Friday filed criminal charges against three inmates who escaped in April of this year from the Kansas Department of Corrections while they were placed at the Ottawa County Jail.

The Attorney General filed charges of aggravated escape from custody and battery on a law enforcement officer against 22-year-old Santos M. Carrera-Morales, 23-year-old Drew Edward Wade, and 23-year-old Alberto Jon Barraza-Lujan.

All three men had been transferred from the Ellsworth Correctional Facility to the Ottawa County Jail. The Ottawa County Sheriff said at the time that the inmates were armed with homemade knives and overpowered guards after complaining about a broken water line in
the holding cell area.

Sheriff Keith Coleman says the inmates overpowered the guards, opened the cell doors and got outside. He says the guards suffered only minor injuries.
